Just because you can doesn't mean you should: the <meter> element

A very frustrating brownie recipe illustrates why a semantic element may actally NOT be the right tool for the job.

  • Very insightful. I think I’ve seen a meter used in a fundraising website. It’s reasonable for “682 raised of 1000.”

As for precision, the battery icon on iOS looks like a meter and it also sounds like one - VoiceOver reads the battery percentage. The idea of “glanceability” doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing across media. I can look at the icon and think “yeah, that’ll last through the day” and read “81%” and still think “yeah, that’ll last through the day.”
