Oh thank fuck! I didn't realise what community this was at first when I saw the pic and thought it was someone sharing another SovCits Facebook post. I was really worried.
Thermite is such a nice combustion material. Easy as hell to make and produces massive amounts of heat. Just need ground aluminum and an oxide. Even rust will work as the oxide, leaving you with molten iron as your final product.
The one negative is the reaction is a bit slow, so you will normally see it placed on (or even better, in) targets rather than rammed into them like you can with other things like an explosive.
You also need a high temperature ignition source. Trivial for the military ofc. One of the bonuses in that it is extremely stable/safe unless successfully ignited which is not easy to do.
An aluminum can filled with rust flakes lit by a burning magnesium strip will penetrate an engine block. Amazing stuff. Chemistry teacher used it as a demo in class one day. The minuscule amount he used burnt through the metal tray and molten balls of iron splashed outwards across the entire linoleum floor leaving burn damage everywhere. Lucky nobody was hurt, the Janitors were not happy I'm sure. 😂
