Open source alternatives for gallery app

Hello this is my first post on Lemmy, I have been disgruntled with Xiaomi's stock gallery app and wish to switch to an alternative that will not steal my data.

I use Simple Gallery from F-droid

- I downloaded it, looks nice so far.

  It works great, and I use it myself. However, its author has been known to pull a bait-and-switch by abruptly putting essential functions of their apps behind a paywall, so I'm considering switching to something else instead.

  Can confirm, I replaced bunch of useless cloud crap on my mum's phone with simple tools and she likes it. I use them too.

I really like Aves Libre.

- Me too, been using it for a few weeks now and it works great for me. That being said, I don't have that many photos/videos, so I don't know how it handles large content collections.

Pardon me if I may inquire, but how exactly does Xiaomi's gallery fail, at being a gallery application? Morbid curiosity if you will.

  Yeah, the video player is shit, crashes all the time. I just use VLC for the videos and the gallery app for the images.
