  • We do? Some ppl dont, we have sugarcane, oranges, lemons, eggplants, peppers, and I forget the rest, my dad/grandpa are more into gardening. Its just not realistic to do a lot, cheaper and a lot faster to go the grocery storec more variety, hoemgrown stuff is ususlly more of an addon.

  • Yep, dont really use mastodon or even bluesky, my twitter groupchat is still my hs friends and I like it when they arent talking about sports. I do post there more than I do on X, I miss twitter I used to tweet so much, before the changes. (Stopped seing friends likes on my feed, I followed funny ppl and without that it was over)

    Federated YikYak alternative?

Does it exist? I miss when YikYak was for hometowns and you could view other cities or comment/post there if in range. I don't like its current state after coming back. It was like the neighbour apps but less facebooky with a crowd under 50, was the ultimate local news source.

  • I enjoy learning vfx through houdini, id be doing it still if it wasnt so annoying to get on linux (im not paying for it, that 260$ a year cost is for me ppl making money and id do it if I was)

Blender is hella fun, like the ultimate sandbox game, cities skylines with no constraints (except much harder) I think with more and more addons it'll be the perfect sandbox creative city builder. Like procedural roads, cities, procedural terrain, buildings, etc. When the laxk of freedom in those games dissapoint you just make animations, the end goal in some of these games like planet coaster is to have something cool to look at and modify freely, the economy means nothing, might as well make it in blender.

  • You can try the sanctus demo yourself and see if it works for you on Blender running on Linux. Alt tab easy fog 2 says win/mac and a reviewer had issues running it on linux, i tried another material addon, the materials work but previews in its ui are broken.

  • Blender @lemmy.world
    3dmvr @lemm.ee

Accidentally made a basic eye shader that follows the camera

Not sure if this is a popular technique? It takes like 5 seconds to have some basic cartoony eyes that follow the camera.

  • I had a few not install, some say that linux isnt supported in reviews and dont work like alt tab easy fog 2, and sanctus are the ones I remember off the top of my head (sanctus menu didn't work and caused blender to freeze, took me forever to realize it was soemthing I was appending that had a sanctus material causing my crash, didn't realize til I installed the addon on a fresh install and tried applying it to something getting the same issue)

  • Maybe Linux, too lazy to swap back to windows, a lot of random stuff doesnt work or is super annoying to get working, like a material library addon I use for Blender doesn't work for linux apparently (sanctus) and makes it so I cant render with any light in the scene so its not just the menu but the materials themselves. I was hoping at least blender would work, already had to stop pirating houdini and I couldnt get the free version to work either.

All games have been fine, but I dont just game anymore, I like making stuff and playing with 3d tools.

At least embergen seems to work, so I might transition to jangafx over houdini, can buy it monthly and I spend way too much time learning houdini (its fun af) when im likely never making money off this hobby. (cant justify 300$ a year or 2500 perpetual rnow, its an insanely fun simulation toy so it honestly might be worth that, even not making money off it) Its just annoying, I've spent too much time learning it, my brains crammed with Houdini specific information.

  • Its adhd, I had/have it didnt get diagnosed, you could force yourself to learn the hard way (I got disqualified and had to get reinstated took me z6 years instead of 4 for my Bs and I swapped to information systems, which I regret, I gaslighted myself into not liking programming when I just needed to start my work earlier) For me, a mix of getting older, and failing enough times, plus the disqualification, is what got me to goto class and do my work, I wouldn't have done it otherwise, which is why getting diagnosed is necessary.

I used my sisters adderal sparingly the last two years and I mightve not got through without it, some days I would wake up just not caring about anything, super lazy, demotivated, etc. It was pure luck when id do well a semester because I just happened to not wake up feeling bad or oversleep a final that semester. And it's not a choice, why would anyone choose to not do what they want to do when they have the time, just never have energy or have too much.

Are opensource groupfunded self hosted mmos a thing?

Always thought private servers were fun for aqworlds, was wondering if there are any popular legal self hosted mmos. Mmos dont make much money and a lot of ppl developing them just want to play their dream games supposedly, wonder why no ones kickstarted or tried to groupfund an open source mmo, where the project cant die and any interested team could fork it or take over.

    IPTV with live chat?

I see a lot of random iptv apps/services, do any exist that have live chat rooms for each channel? Miss the vibe of watching anime on a piracy site with a chat room on the side.

    CachyOs vs PopOs vs others?

What would you reccomend/use for an alienware laptop m17r5 with amdcpu (idr) and gpu 6850mxt. Idc about adjusting the keyboard lights, I changed it once and never touched it again. I play games like cities skyline, noita, etc. and some vr stuff rarely like vtolvr and warthunder. I use blender and houdinifx.
I've seen PopOs reccomended for Blender users but I think thats because it comes with a lot of stuff you need for Nvidia, which isn't relevant to me with an all amd setup.

Cachyos seems to be the move for best performance with rendering and simulating, was wondering about other options I have since I dont need to worry about nvidia drivers.

I dont like the idea of using ubuntu because of snap packages, but its not a big deal.

While I like tinkering, I do want it to be relatively stable, not suprising me with issues when I need it.

Currently Interested in: CachyOs Debian (leaning towards here if I go the stable route) EndeavorOs Mint (seems popular, is it just simplified

Can I setup Linux on a VM and then swap to that setup permanently if it works well for me?

Not really sure how dualbooting or vms work at their core. I'm kind of over windows and want to swap, always liked the customizability aspect and have been using Linux more and more for self hosting purposes. Was wondering if I setup linux on my external ssd using a vm if I could change it from vm to a dualboot drive after I'm done setting it up. That way I could setitup and swap to it while keepign my original ssd with my windows install,. and not have to deal with dualbooting and going back and forth while setting up?

Can I make a vm of my current windows machine backup and run that in a linux setup?

What is your favorite app for Lemmy? Include Platform.

I started off using Voyager, swapped to Mlem because of slight differences I preferred. Recently found out Thunder for Lemmy is available on the apple appstore and it instantly became my favorite. I like how unique the ui is compared to other, it seems better suited for browsing and posting on Lemmy, while the others feel better for the initial transition from Reddit. Very suprised it has barely any downloads or reviews when its easily the best Lemmy app on IOS.

Thunder reminds me of the more "modern" alternative front ends for lemmy some sites have while mlem and voyager feel more like the alternative reddit apps (blue alien) and give a similar experience.

On desktop, I've been using Friendica.

Do you like the Mastodon approach of consistent branding for different instances?

It makes it easier to understand what this is and that they are interconnected, but I think I enjoy unique branding/themes more in practice now that I am actually using the fediverse.

How to get lemmy to not crop images?

I self hosted an instance at is.hardlywork.ing, my images are getting cropped and losing the top and bottom 25% of the the image, leaving me a zoomed in rectangle. I tried on web browser, phone app, etc. same issue uploading any 1920x1080 photo.

Images I upload get cropped, is this normal

Just started an instance so I can upload images, is.hardlywork.ing , The images I upload are screenshots of comics, they are missing the top and bottom parts of the image like 25% both ways, and the final result it uploads is zoomed in and cropped.

Good resources on making a lemmy bot?

Never tried before, want to automatically crosspost posts with locked comments to unlockthread@lemm.ee, wondering if it's even possible and what direction I need to head in. Just going off lemmy settings allowing bot accounts.

I have some programming and webdev knowledge so I'm not compeltely clueless, just fairly clueless wheen it comes to bots.

If you're tired of people locking fun threads, because they are going offtopic or comments violate that specific community's rules , crosspost them here to restart/continue the conversation.

I find it really frustrating when I'm reading an interesting thread, goto comment and I am unable to because someone decided to lock it for going offtopic. Personally, my favorite comments sections are the ones that end up going offtopic.

Still need to follow lemm.ee rules ofc.

    Sharkey Install keeps failing (yunohost)

It worked two days ago, wanted to change my vps and domain, I reinstalled yunohost on my vps with a fresh install and now it keeps throwing an error, I tried on a seperate vps and it wont work there either. Is this an issue with yunohosts implementation that just arose recently or is there something wrong with my vps or domains? Probably a good time to suggest Lemmy

While they're censoring people/subs, I feel like a good amount of the community isn't even aware of spez being a trump supporter and how bad the donalds presence used to be, with conservative showing up on the front page a lot and subreddits being tempbanned(new mods), it seems to be headed that way again.

Yall need to stop suggesting the niche extremist instances tho, it almost seems like you dont want ppl coming unless they fit your specific ideology when you only suggest those. Suggest general purpose ones so they get the bigger picture, they'll eventually see those niche ones and decide to join them if they fit them.

Can you login to the mobile apps with selfhosted Lemmy?

It was easy enough to do it with self hosted mastodon, cant seem to login to any of the Lemmy apps with my selfhosted website? Lemmy.rip

UPDATE: I had to renew through a setting in yunohost, not automatic, porkbun was showing it as valid and I I'm used to them grabbing it automatically or having me paste it in during setup.

Is there a mmo equivalent of the fediverse?

Growing up I used to play aqworlds and it was super common in my online friend group at the time for everyone to host their own private servers on their own websites, once I got into the fediverse and webhosting again, I was reminded of it and it got me thinking how cool it would be to have a browser 2d mmo where people hosted their own servers.

Is there a game that implements activityhub at all? Like where server chat can be read and sent from something like mastodon.

I realize this is a stretch and something like this doesn't make sense or exist, just curious.
