[OC] The USS Constitution, the oldest naval warship still afloat.
  • Victory would likely sink in the dry dock before the tug could take her anywhere. There has been no effort made to make her float. Hull repairs done over the last few decades have not been made water tight.

  • Victory would sink if put on the sea.
Over time, repairs have been carried out to maintain her appearance, but not her seaworthyness. In many places, soft wood has replaced hardwood and no effort has been made to ensure she is structurally sound or water tight.

Norway says Israel response to Hamas attack disproportionate
  • We shouldn't be.
The only solution to the region is a Palestine that is prosperous and free. So long as people have nothing to lose, they will continue laying down their lives.

    Add-on: same password, same identity.
  • I use the same password for every site, but I put the name of the site at the end of the password.
    For example:
    NotmypassB3ta.
    NotmypassGoogle.
    NotnypassLemmy. Etc.
I figure it might stop the most lazy of attacks.

  • I gather that this is partly because data sizes haven't been going up with model sizes. That is likely to change soon as synthetic data starts to overtake organic data in both quantity and quality.

  • Has anyone else seen what's getting upvoted on Reddit? It's crazy over there. They are saying and upvoting things I thought I would never see from a public internet crowd. I really hope some kind of manipulation is going on, else it's really fucked

Did Israel bomb a civilian evacuation route in Gaza? | Financial Times
  • And masking it by restricting the ability of journalists to report on it, by targeting buildings associated with journalism, refusing journalists access, creating unsafe conditions for journalism and cutting power.
This is the reason that counterfactual reports about this bombing have been able to become so prevalent.

A rundown of some of the heartbreaking updates out of Palestine today
  • This isn't a black and white moral issue in which something can be declared "justified" or "unjustified" and that's the end of the matter.

The razing of cities has been seen as just and unjust by various people over human history. However, if the razing of axis cities has been conducted in the old fashioned way, by killing men women and children with hand held weapons, instead of bombs dropped from a distance, then the ≈650,000 deaths that resulted might be viewed differently.

US campuses in uproar as Israel-Palestine conflict exposes divide
  • I agree, the problematic issues within Ukraine are trivial compared to the problems with the way Russia or Hamas operate. However, it's also the case that the actions of Hamas are not comparable to the actions of the Israeli state, most especially in the long term.
Both sides in any conflict must be held to account for their actions or inactions, but in doing so care must be taken not to suggest that both sides are equally the orchestrators of the situation.
