Banning Spree?
  • I think I can explain it. I think it's abnormal behavior to downvote outside of misinformation or out of context. I also think it's abnormal to ban anyone who downvotes, but both of you have the right to do so. Neither of you broke a site-wide rule, unless you didn't follow the guidelines in their community sidebar before participating. Them choosing to remove the mod is the communities right and I support that. I look at the form of downvoting you're conducting as a form of vote brigading (socially, not directed by an individual but a group effort nonetheless with evidence by the bans). If bans for non-participation go out and downvotes continue, they can better get a grasp of what the actual community wants. Atm they're just following what the "All" feed tells them without being able to differentiate.

  • I'm not a vegan, none of those memes you've posted make me feel personally attacked nor do I feel insulted. I'm glad for the clarification, but I was expecting something much worse like a vegan death cult manifesto by the reactions here.

You don't want to silence yourself from a community you're not a part of by your own admission? Do you really feel it's your duty to go into every community and mandate their content and tone to your liking?

I guess you can look at it as "hiding" to curate your feed by removing the communities you're not interested in. I don't think you're really challenging their opinions, just kinda being a douche. I see plenty of shit posted about windows or apple users, we're not pitch forking everyone that posts a spicy meme. We insult the rich and powerful etc, what class of protection are you proposing to secure? The omnivores? Who's going to police what's hostile or insulting? I don't understand what this call to action is trying to implement or suggest besides outside policing of communities which is one of the reasons the fediverse was made to combat that type of control.

  • Ok, I tend to think I'm a decent human being but I don't understand your logic and I can only see your comments as negative. Please help me understand the differences in our thought train.

    • People are downvoting content (abusing the intended purpose of a downvote) they're seeing without even being involved in a community
    • Mod of that community bans users (common with vote brigading) who aren't real active users, users can no longer see the content satisfying your dismay of seeing it in your feed (instead of blocking the community)
    • You then accuse the mod of stopping people downvoting who don't like the community who aren't a part of that community?

You're actually acknowledging you've "downvoted a lot of their memes" because of previous un-related content, continuing to abuse the downvote and even pointed out the mod was effective at stopping the vote brigading from people outside the community. I have no clue about the Vegan situation myself, but I thought a mod had completely autonomy to run their community the way they want and the point of decentralization was the ability to move into another space when needed.

  • people really need to stop confusing an upvote/downvote to basic democratic voting. There is no ticker above the ballot box letting you know how everyone voted before you, there is no "policy" or "elected position" being voted on. This is more akin to an open conference debate where people are booing or yaying when someone speaks up about a topic. Your privacy on a public forum discussion never existed to begin with, people in a public setting know their anonymity isn't guaranteed.

YouTube on TVs is cramming ads down your throat even when pausing videos
  • I'm just tired of my electronics doing "extra". I want to pause the video/player, I don't want that to activate other activities for my device to perform...I just want to pause the fucking video. They're all guilty of this though, either they show ads or screenshots of what they want you to watch next. I can't even pause a video anymore to look at something or show something. The amount of times I've paused to have a discussion and the distracting shit plays in the background annoyed me to the point I no longer use the "smart tv" to watch anything and only use the tv hooked up to the comp so I can actually control and have a pleasant viewing experience.

How China’s first AAA game Wukong Became One of the Fastest Selling Games in History
  • The whole premise of the article? There's 2 statements in the entire article that you've highlighted, a rather long and lengthy article about the development and history behind the game developer. Your statements of "what the article is saying" is completely false,

is pretending the sale is some runaway success in the west

    where does it say this?

article completely ignores the source of the sales volume

Article clearly states it's sales, touches on the current chinese population use of steam, I'm not sure what you're saying should be the "correct" thing that would satisfy you. Maybe you could provide an example?

The actual impact it’s going to have is much less on the development of AAA games by Chinese studios and much more as a demonstration of the Chinese market’s interest in single player games.

That's a valid statement with a lot of factors (younger generations play more multiplayer). It wasn't the scope of this article to break down consumer purchasing trends within a category (this thing is already long enough).

This seemed like a very milquetoast level style of an article highlighting the success and development of a game studio, I suppose everyone complains in the gaming industry now adays (myself included) so I'll take your negativity more as a "gamer" thing than just hating on something not from the west. I'm rather glad to be exposed to news articles on here that aren't NA eccentric that I'm always reading. Them not highlighting and differentiating themselves from the western market has seemed to gotten you into a hissy fit.

What is the goto source for free-as-in-freedom information about growing plants and helpful diagnostics info?
  • As others have stated, you want to contact your local co-op extension if you're in the states.

    https://extension.org/find-cooperative-extension-in-your-state/

The Cooperative Extension System is a non-formal educational program implemented in the United States designed to help people use research-based knowledge to improve their lives. The service is provided by the state's designated land-grant universities. In most states, the educational offerings are in the areas of agriculture and food, home and family, environment, community economic development, and youth and 4-H. (wiki)

They'll have free soil sample kits, articles and programs/classes for local agriculture, etc etc.

Anything else will be pirated, shitty ad filled ai knockoff apps, or finding a forum of like minded individuals you can ask. There are plenty of resources out there but a "one stop shop" I haven't found. The problem stems probably from location, information is vast and mostly irrelevant if you're not in the same growing zones. The local co-ops will have individuals, employees, and articles posted up, they're really helpful when it comes to reaching out to them in my experience.

I'm more for factual information. This post of a reddit screen-shot by a poster who put up shitty information that's irrelevant seems really popular, is this just like an internet fan-trolling on 3rd parties in the US that both the left and right love to perform? I don't expect this to change if we even had a change in our electoral process, just more hating on other parties at this point.

Woman who was denied a liver transplant, after review highlighted alcohol use, has died
  • That's a lot of vague statements you've repeated from the article. What's drinking "regularly" (this was before the diagnosis as you've stated)? "She kept drinking", what does that mean? How much alcohol was she consuming? Did she have a sip of her friends wine and was honest about it so was rejected?

as the article also says it’s incredibly dangerous for someone to get a live-donor transplant when they’re in bad shape like she was, as failure of that means they’ll need to let her die on-table or transplant a good dead one into her

Where does it say that? You've completely twisted the statements.

"On the off chance their (living) liver doesn't work, they urgently get listed for a deceased donor," said Jayakumar. "We need to make sure that everyone who is a candidate for a living donor is also a candidate for a donor graft as well, " she added.

Huska’s time at the Oakville hospital likely cost over $450,000 - ($3,592 per day for ICU care) with an additional 61 days in a ward bed which likely cost about $1,200 a day, A liver transplant in Ontario is pegged at about $71,000 to $100,000 in Ontario based on data from 2019.

In 2021, 15.6 per cent of Canadians over 12 engaged in heavy drinking – a term defined as five or more drinks for males, or over four for females, on one occasion at least once per month in the past year.

Heavy drinking is drinking ONCE per month in the past year. If this is based off of before her diagnosis, you're gonna exclude like 80% of the working population who actually does go out for drinks or private occasions (unless they just lie which I guess they should've in this situation). Between the price of keeping them alive but not fixing the problem and there being no "review" process for decisions, I would categorize this as a bad system that allowed a preventable death from an alcohol related disease to continue.

I ran into an old movie I had on VHS as a kid titled "MegaForce" (1982) (RT link). I hadn't seen the movie in decades and was worried looking at a rotten tomato score of 6% that if I watched it, I would be completely disappointed in the movie as an adult. Surprisingly, I didn't realize as a kid that it was actually more of a spoof comedy action movie like a knock-off "Hot Shots" or "Naked Gun" and just completely enjoyed watching it again because it felt like a whole new experience (definitely better than the new G.I. Joe's lol).

So what's your movie from your past that you'll always enjoy no matter how cheesy or horrible it may seem?

I've been seeing more often (and others have posted the same) that some of the elements of "Reddit etiquette" seem to be taking over here. Luckily I can still find discussion comments but it seems the jokes and general "downvote because I disagree" are slowly taking over.

So the question becomes is it the size or the functionality of the site? The people or popularity? What's your thoughts?

edit: should I change it to Lemmy-hivemind? Exhibit A: the amount of downvotes without a single explanation (guessing it's anything to do with Reddit being talked about).

I just wanted to use my voice to let everyone know about this since it seems to be something they want to Streisand effect. I made a discussion on the stormgate steam page about how their EULA has a bad link to their privacy policy and asked why the information listed in the policy is being collected. It had to go through the review process since it contained links and then after being posted was deleted from my history after an hour (I guess when someone actually laid eyes on it)

For the full details I already made a post in the privacy community asking if this was a common occurrence. I'm attempting to reach out through other avenues for some type of explanation but just getting crickets or brick walls. Please use caution and common sense when downloading and consenting to agreements from game companies.

The highlights if you don't feel like clicking the link:

    > In particular, we have collected the following categories of personal information from consumers within the last twelve (12) months:

Rather peeved about all of this. Been waiting for this game for ages and was excited about the F2P aspect then found out a lot of elements of the game are locked behind paywalls making the full game costing way over most AAA games. Ok, lets roll on anyways and see what the game has to offer. Then I get to the privacy policy and realize they're using anti-cheat services to monitor your game, I continued reading the user agreement and then had to find their actual privacy policy page because they have it listed under a different url then what they have posted. Some Highlights from the user agreement:

    > You may not host, provide or develop matchmaking services for the Product, or intercept, emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Frost Giant in any way, for any purpose, including without limitation unauthorized play over the internet, network play (except as expressly authorized by Frost Giant), or as part of content aggregation networks.

    > You may not play on another user's Account

    > In order to safeguard its licensing rights, when you are using the Product, Frost Giant may monitor your hardware random access memory (RAM)

    > You understand that the mere presence of unauthorized cheat software on your device, whether or not you use that unauthorized software while playing the Game, may result in Frost Giant exercising its full rights under this Agreement.

    • You have the resources necessary to easily reinstall the operating system for the computer system that you will use to take part in the Alpha or Beta Test as well as to restore any and all data that may be lost;

It just goes on and on with some really sketchy stuff, then I get to the privacy policy:

Sorry for the vague question but I'm hoping there's a lot I"m missing. I know I can edit the side bar, icon, and banner. Make the community public or private and there's a "mod posting only" option. But is that it?

    Some things I'm wondering about,

    • can I turn downvotes off or is that an instance only thing? (fan community, off topic would just be removed)
    • Is there any other way to manipulate the community page like backgrounds etc?
    • Flair's or post tags? Any community settings I looked over?
    • Allowing or disallowing bots (again is this an instance thing?)

I'm fine with what it is, just wanted to make sure there wasn't more I was missing with my options in the community.

Bonus question, besides crossposting and the "new communities" community sections, is there anything else I should do with a fresh community?
