Meshtastic: An open source, off-grid, decentralized, mesh network
  • These are incredible for hiking, hunting, etc

One alone won't be able to do much but if you need to connect a few people in a rural area it's amazing.

My only hope is that waterproof models become more available

  • If OP is attempting a 3-2-1 Backup scheme, this is an irrelevant argument.

OP wants to store a backup in a different physical location while trusting that it won't be used to train AI. They are looking for services that can satisfy that.

Blue-light filtering glasses probably make no difference to eye strain – study
  • Blue light has a documented effect on our circadian rhythm and melatonin production. It's been studied quite a bit. I'm sure mental overstimulation is a component, but it absolutely is not the whole story.

In Western society, there is a big focus on silver bullet solutions because people don't want to address issues in a holistic way. Thus, you have blue light filters instead of turning the screen off.

  • Of course a 6" screen doesn't produce as much as a ball of nuclear fire

But that ball of fire isn't 12 inches from your face at midnight. And, the majority of blue light filter use is targeting sleep quality. A good portion of this comes down to cumulative exposure time. The best solution is to just not look at screens after a certain hour, but no one wants to do that.

    My fourth shirt
  • The biggest thing is to not be afraid of mistakes in my opinion. You will learn more about how constructions go together by doing them, making mistakes, reevaluating your mental model, and fixing those mistakes than you will by paralyzing yourself with fear.

Find a reasonable first pattern and make it several times. Then find a second pattern that takes skills from the first and adds others. In this way, you grow your skill set to accomplish the things you want to do.

Once you reach that point, try different materials. Learn about how different materials need to be finished, and use that knowledge to modify the patterns you already know. French seams are an excellent tool for this.

At this point, the world is your oyster. I'm currently working my way through a few new patterns, and a wild variety of fabrics. It's very satisfying, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

This was my fourth shirt, but I recently posted my ninth. I've come a long way, and I still make a bunch of little dumb mistakes. It's fine, it has never ruined one of my shirts.

Oh and one more thing! When you buy a pattern many will be printed on tissue paper, and will have the lines printed for ever available size. It's expensive, but I have grown to love swedish tracing paper. It's not actually "paper", and the idea is that you trace your intended size lines of a pattern onto it, cut the panels out of the swedish tracing paper, and now you have a more durable way to repeat the exact same sewing pattern with whatever fabric you find yourself with. By doing this, you can keep the purchased tissue pattern as an archive. Maybe you need to retrace something eventually, or maybe you want to make the same thing in a different size one day. Regardless of why, you can't do that if you cut your intended size out of the tissue pattern.

    I finished my tunic!
  • Especially for those of us who run hot!

Sometimes you just gotta have clothing that feels like an illusion to survive the ever-growing heat. I find myself particularly enjoying rayon, which often feels actively cool when I wear it.

This rayon linen blend is like something out of a book for me, though. It may end up being my new favorite fabric

    I finished my tunic!
  • As an aside, this was the most difficult shirt I've made yet easily. I attribute this to two factors:

    • The fabric having such a fluid drape is crazy. It's like trying to stitch water together sometimes.
    • I have come to dislike fusible interfacing because of the puckered texture it often gets during washing. This uses a Pellon branded sew in interfacing, and is my first time using such interfacing. It worked amazingly well, but was an adjustment for sure.

Ultimately I intend to ask my fabric store more about this particular fabric and what other colors it may be available in. It's just so glorious to wear.

I finished my Tunic! It's a very light rayon linen blend that feels like barely wearing a shirt at all. It will be a welcome addition as well endure this unforgiving heat. Pattern is "Men's Tunic" from Wardrobe By Me

I finished my tunic over the weekend!

The pattern is Men's Tunic from Wardrobe By Me. The fabric is an extremely thin linen rayon blend my local fabric store called Blueberry Dreams. The fabric weight is surrealistically thin, and the drape is extremely fluid.

I've legitimately never had a shirt that felt this luxurious. It should be a welcome addition in the broiling weather.

My other half has been moving away from synthetic materials. I made her a linen tunic to help her on her way #sewing

    This is my first time:

    • Using linen
    • Making a tunic
    • Constructing a mandarin collar

All in all, I'm very happy with how it turned out. This is one of the few garments she has that doesn't make her feel cold nor hot in a wide variety of temperatures, so happy it appears to be functional

A colorful take on my seventh homemade shirt
  • Thanks!

It's been very satisfying getting better at these and occasionally wearing them into fabric stores.

The ladies running the stores are always taken aback when they realize I'm wearing my own work

A colorful take on my 7th homemade shirt #sewing

I had a lot of fun with this one. I've been planning this ever since seeing this particular Tula Pink print.

Pattern is Wardrobe by me's Jensen shirt

This is one of my favorite shirt patterns, but next I have some patterns that I haven't tried yet. It should be fun!

Incredible heat calls for incredible seersucker.

This is my first time working with the fabric, but it came together into one of my best shirts yet. This thing looks (at a glance) like it came off a store rack, and I couldn't be more proud of that fact.

I like unusual shirts and recently took it upon myself and my wife's sewing machine to start making my own shirts.

I ran into this rayon challis in the fabric store and decided I should have a tropical shirt of it. Converting my pattern to accommodate what I've heard about rayon challis involved turning the side seams and arm seams into french seams (after adding to the seam allowance on the pattern).

Surprisingly, it fits perfectly. It's not perfect by any means, but it's the first shirt of this fabric type that I've ever owned.

Like many, when the recent defederation went down, I decided to create a couple other logins and see what the wider fediverse has had to say about it.

I've been, honestly, a bit surprised by the response. A huge portion of people seem to be misidentifying communities as belonging to "lemmy" as opposed to the instances that host them. I think a big portion of this seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of what this software is, and how it works.

For example, lemmy.world users are pissed at being de-federated because it excludes them from Beehaw communities. This outrage seems wholly placed in the concept that Beehaw's communities are "owned" by the wider fediverse. This is blatantly not how lemmy works. Each instance hosts a copy of federated instances' content for their users to peruse. The host (Beehaw in this example) remains being the source of truth for these communities. As the source of truth, Beehaw "owns" the affected communities, and it seems people have not realized that.

This also has wider implications for why one might want to de-federate with a wider array of instances. Lets say I have a server in a location that legally prohibits a certain type of pornography. If my users subscribe to other instances/communities that allow that illegal pornography, I (the server admin) may find myself in legal jeopardy because my instance now holds a copy of that content for my users.

Please keep this in mind as you enjoy your time using Lemmy. The decisions that you make affect the wider instance. As you travel the fediverse, please do so with the understanding that your interactions reflect this instance. More than anything, how can we spread this knowledge to a wider audience? How can we make the fediverse and how it works less confusing to people who aren't going to read technical documentation?

We felt like eating vegetarian tonight, so I modified a chicken korma recipe for tofu.

Pretty happy with how it turned out
