Thank you for the info!

So, Lemmy is a bunch of separate social media networks that seamlessly* connect to each other? That's.... really cool

Omg I love that Wiki article
You know it's bad when the second section of the Wikipedia article opens with US war crimes
"The metaphor originally meant that corrupt influence spreads, but is now used to downplay war crimes, ACAB btw" legendary

Wait....you can browse instances without making an account??? Whoops, lol, I guess I was a little too eager to get Boost for Lemmy working with an account of my own immediately following Boost for Reddit getting nuked.
Is there a good way to browse instances? (Particularly through Boost?)
Also, what are the instances.... literally? Like, I've never seen social media have groups like this (tied to the account, and separate from the communities, that is)

I think TikTok is stupid. Everything I see about it makes me think it's stupid, and short-form media is rotting peoples' brains
But by god, this is America! We have every right to rot our own brains if we want! U! S! A! The State can't stop us!

Um, who is that guy?

Of course! Congress will take out his competition for him! Why wouldn't he?
Also, why does his opinion matter more to Congress than other Americans? Oh, yeah, I know why...

If such fears were officials' genuine motivation, one could hope that broader data-privacy regulation might follow
This is what blows it out of the water for me. When the TikTok ban was first floated a few years ago, I liked the sound of legislation to protect user data. But that's not what it's about; where's the new regulations? The new protections? What consequences will Twitter and Facebook and Instagram face? No where, no where, none, none, none. It's not about protecting Americans from the CCP, it's about stopping the CCP from getting in on their game

What exactly are instances? I picked one at random that claimed to be "general purpose" because I didn't know what I was doing (I migrated very recently)

I think people who say that are thinking "ACAB" means "every single one is a bad person" (an easy to disprove hyperbole) instead of "it's literally their job to reinforce the current system, which is broken"

Nuh-uh! MY made up beliefs are better!!!!!

Real. This thread is making my brain hurt

You excel at what you measure....

Okay but that's actually really funny

Is it "pudding" in the American sense or the British?

How can you tell? The extra jpeg artifacts around the letters?

Herculanum Font spotted

"He can't kill all of us"

The steak will insist it's a "special military operation"
