Never bothered me personally. The reason I block people is that I no longer have to see their posts. I find some level on enjoyment in the fact that on Lemmy there are people constantly wasting their time writing replies to me which I'll never read.
Tesla recently switched from human-written code to full neural networks with their FSD system, which resulted in a significant leap in how reliable and human-like it became. Nowadays, it’s safe to assume it will perform better than the average human driver on most trips, but it’s still not reliable enough to be blindly trusted. You still need to sit there, paying attention to make sure it doesn’t do anything stupid. It’s, by far the most advanced 'self-driving' system available on a vehicle you can buy.
The reason it’s constantly in the news is that anything related to Elon, AI, or self-driving is guaranteed to get clicks in today’s mediascape. It's not a flawless system by any means but it's also not as bad as people make it to be.
Exactly. The current rate is 80 deaths per day in the US alone. Even if we had self-driving cars proven to be 10 times safer than human drivers, we’d still see 8 news articles a day about people dying because of them. Taking this as 'proof' that they’re not safe is setting an impossible standard and effectively advocating for 30,000 yearly deaths, as if it’s somehow better to be killed by a human than by a robot.
Technically, it’s 'mute,' not 'block.' In most cases, blocking not only prevents you from seeing their content but also them from seeing yours.
What Twitter is being criticized for here is changing blocking to work similarly to how it does on Lemmy, with the exception that you still couldn’t engage with content from users who have blocked you, whereas on Lemmy, you can.
It’s being argued that 'weakening' the block feature in this way makes stalking and harassment easier.
Every time someone makes a blanket demand like 'everyone just get off Twitter,' and I ask why I should, the answer is more or less: 'I don’t like Elon, so I don’t want anyone using his platform.'
I’ve yet to figure out why I should care how somebody else feels about what I do online. I don't like TikTok either yet I don't go around telling people to get off the platform.
I had a similar thing happen with my fatbike, though this didn't make a sound and didn't take too long to figure out what the issue was. Even managed to puncture the inner tube on both sides.
The nature of my job is that I often listen to people tell me their life story while I’m replacing their kitchen faucet. It’s not that I can’t do small talk - I just find most of the topics incredibly uninteresting. Like I said earlier, I know how to play the game, I just find it mind-numbingly boring.
This goes both ways, though. I’m acutely aware that most people aren’t interested in the things I’m most passionate about, so I don’t bring those up either. But when I do meet someone with similar interests, I could talk for hours. Those conversations are rarely about people or events - mostly about ideas.
I don’t feel like it makes much difference whether the person is close to me or not. It’s not that I don’t care about what happens to these people, but a huge part of the topics people generally small talk about are the kinds of mundane things I have almost zero interest in discussing. For example, if something interesting happened to you over the weekend, I assume you’re just going to tell me about it - I would. But I sometimes feel like people expect me to ask about those things, and when I see others do it, I’m often a bit skeptical about whether they’re actually interested or just going through the motions. Thus this thread.

$190 bucks a month for a limitless connection is insane. I'm too cheap to pay 30€ a month for unlimited fibre connection so I use 4G router which gives me around 40Mbps unlimited connection and it costs me 10€ a month.
When speaking of memes, most people think of internet memes. The likes of which this and every other meme community is full of. That's not what Dawkins means by a meme. What he means by it is a cultural analog to genes. A trait that passes from person to person as an idea or behavior. Shaking hands would an example of such meme.
Internet meme on the other hand generally comes in the form of a picture which is funny, ironic or relateable.
Truth and reason. I think that would fall under the philosophy category. My view of the world is quite cold and analytical. I see it as a complex machine without any inherent meaning. I don’t believe in the self or free will, but rather see myself as an experiencer watching life unfold in front of me. Probably the biggest impact this has on my daily life is that I don’t look for people to blame for how things are. I don’t think most people realize how profoundly life changes when you stop pointing fingers.
When put like this, it probably sounds depressing or nihilistic, but it’s the only foundation I’ve found that aligns with every event in the world without causing internal conflict. I only care about how things are, not how I or others feel about them.
Yeah, but this is what troubles me. It’s not that I don’t know what’s expected of me in these situations - I know how to play the game. I’m just not interested in it.
I do try to think about whether there’s anything even remotely interesting about what’s happened to them, and if so, I’ll ask about that. But in many cases, there’s not. Unless their vacation was to a place like North Korea, the most interesting part to me is what kind of plane they flew on and whether they found the baggage carousel mesmerizing.
