Black Friday Homelab Projects
  • That way I can run my more demanding stuff without also having to power a bunch of spinning rust all the time. Yes the ~70 watts for 24/7 HDD’s nags at me that much; don’t try to tell me how long it will take me to make my $80 back 😂

Aren't drive hibernating if you don't use them?

Anyway At worse it's 20$ per month if you pay .38 kW/h. 😅

Oh boy here we go for me :

    • 8x ESP32
    • 50 feet of LED
    • a crate of electrical hardware to power up everything.
    • a mini EliteDesk to replace my RetroPi with something with a bit more power.
    • I have to Install that dual 10gb card in my server.
    • I still have to finish my Watercooled GPU with an disconnect-able external radiator in his own case (I think I need another D5 pump.. Damnit and more piping..)

I won't talk about everything else I need to do haha.

Help to identify motherboard connector on Supermicro X12SPM-TF
  • JNVME 0 and 1

This look like the X12SPM-LN4F, so this FAQ should apply :

    https://www.supermicro.org.cn/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=34848

JNVME0/1 are PCIe 4.0 x8 Slimline SAS Connectors. These two Slimline SAS connectors located on the motherboard to support two PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe connections. This connector provides high-speed and low-latency connections directly from the CPU to NVMe Solid State (SSD) drives. Cables available from SMCI eStore: https://store.supermicro.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=slimline sas

Need some advice to rebuild my homelab to save energy.
  • Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3 GHz 6-Core Processor

Oh boy, this is probably the least efficient cpu I ever seen and it consume almost as much as my Epyc 7551, check the TDP value.

    That's a good list of LGA-2011-3 but crosscheck with CpuBenchmark : https://www.cpu-list.com/lga-2011-3-cpu-list/eng/

Did you buy an IBM x3650 M4 without asking me?!
  • Well you can't put two I7s on one board :)

    Technically you can : https://www.newegg.ca/p/pl?d=dual+processor+motherboard

Question is, why would you? 😂 You will get better performance from a Xeon or Epyc cpu for probably less.

The x3650 M4 7915 is a fine server, although outdated to today standards can still pull his weight if hidden and not scared of power cost (like OP mentioned, he's not haha.

  • if only my teenage self understood the treasure that setup would become.

Oh yeah that's sad, I remember moving out of my parents house 15 years ago only to come back for Christmas and asking where the old Tandy computer was.. My mother threw it out, that thing had a bunch of great classic games running on DOS like Rampage, Pitfall, Star Trek, galaga, centipede, etc... I'm still mad.

Did you buy an IBM x3650 M4 without asking me?!
  • Downside? It's noisy and power hungry

Pretty big downside tbh and pretty meh Xeon CPU at this point (equal to a 7th gen i7).

But plus side is the space for HDD, memory is easy to get cheap (DDR3) and a solid case to build in a new build at worse.

    Custom built NAS or Synology
  • I do.. We still have users who have them in their office at work and an Addonic raid array from early 2000s... I need to check it next week lol.

    Custom built NAS or Synology
  • I don't think I ever heard of Thecus.. are they still around? Website is online but I couldn't find any vendor with any model in stock.. pretty strange.

Worse NAS goes to Iomega StorCenter ix2.. Probably the worst device I ever worked with, Lenovo pulled the plug on the company in 2018, which existed since the 80s.

    Custom built NAS or Synology
  • You could also run Xpenology on your custom NAS, which is a bootloader for Synology DSM os. Other alternative is TrueNAS, Unraid or OpenMediaVault (or any other I might not know).

QNAP nas are fine too, but I disliked the backdoor they had pre-2021.. Terramaster are terrible chinese knockoff though, hardware is ok but the OS need to be flashed.

Efficiency Alternative for Corsair RM550X in Home Server
  • Well getting a better rated PSU for a higher price might help in the long run, you will have to do the math although going with the efficiency of Platinum versus Gold its not a lot.

Europe Electricity is still around 43 cent/KWH?

Efficiency Alternative for Corsair RM550X in Home Server
  • Wow didn't notice how hard it is to get a platinum 500w power supply in 2023.. The only one being a Seasonic or Silverstone one for over 200$ (CAD).

    Maybe these one?

    https://www.newegg.ca/evga-supernova-650-p5-220-p5-0650-x1-650w/p/N82E16817438225

(Last I checked EVGA branded PSU are Seasonic, been using those for a decade, no issues.)

    https://www.newegg.com/be-quiet-bn650/p/1HU-004H-00054

    Also a good brand.

P.S. You never mentioned the cost of your build. 😉

A couple of weeks ago, my homemade NAS hardware failed – How should I upgrade?
  • Hence, now that I have the chance I'd like to upgrade to something much more energy efficient, idleing at < 10w.

Unless you're going full (sata) SSD, that's impossible as most drives will idle at 4-7w and go up to 15w.

So 20-25w is not that bad, depending on the amount of drives.

Moving a hard disk from external (usb) internal?
  • "Shucking" not "shrugging" 😂

Can I shrug it and use it internally without having to format it?

Not always has some use the external HDD interface sometime partition the data off by a few bytes, Western Digital is famous for that on the element series.

So I would recommend backing up data to another drive or if you can shuck it without being destructive in-case it doesn't work while shucked.

    So TLDR 50/50 chance.

My first time building a home server, i have few questions in mind
  • only for 1400$

I would say that's pretty costly actually for a single CPU board, my full build was 1200$ CAD in July.

Check this vendor on Ebay for board : https://www.ebay.ca/str/tugm4470

It's where I got my Supermicro H11DSi (mind you it's the late 2017 model but not much new in between 2017 and 2019), fast shipping, pretty good price and he has a mix of ready to go combo or just parts if you need to.

I lean more on the Epyc side for the CPUs over Xeon but both are good.

Looking for advice on transferring Intel NUC internals to a 1U short (20-in) rack mount – any tips or pitfalls to be aware of?
  • Well first, 1U Thermals and noise are terrible due to the need of smallers fan who don't move as much air, but it's probably fine with NUC hardware as they are pretty low power. I would go for 3u or 4u at the very least if I actually want to move them.

Although you could just mount them in their own case.

How often are you shutting down your hosts?
  • Only when I type "shutdown" on the wrong console window.. New hardware or need to fix something.

    So that's pretty rare 😂
