  • m/savedyouaclick. It does exist at @savedyouaclick, but that won’t federate over to kbin for me. I tried multiple times to get the magazine over here, multiple times entering @savedyouaclick@lemmy.nrd.li in the search bar and it’s still not here so might as well remake it. I’m guessing the reason for this is the same reason behind this issue about a magazine from a specific instance not federating over on kbin’s codeberg: something that is fixed in later versions of lemmy. Not sure if lemmy.nrd.li is running a version late enough that it fixes this issue or not.

I also intended to make a couple other magazines that did not have any equivalent I could find on the lemmy.world community search (since it’s one of the biggest instances I figure it’ll show me the most communities, including communities that are not on lemmy.world), but they now have an equivalent!

  • Are you saying that you think I have zero chance of getting a magazine off the ground so I have more posters than just myself, or zero chance of finding someone else who is willing to moderate? I’m not entirely sure I understand your reply.

  • I’m fine with being active in the place, doing lots of advertising, doing my best to get the place off the ground, writing up rules, etc.

I’m not fine with being the first line of defense against some troll posting gore. I also know that I tend to be pretty oversensitive and might use moderator powers to remove replies that really should have stayed up. Hence “I do not have the… thick skin needed to be a moderator”.

So yeah, this is totally self-serving. Don’t feel like putting myself through the gore or putting myself through the “oh my god fucking powertripping mod” criticism (whether warranted or unwarranted), better stay out of that position of power in the first place.

  • A Reddit replacement, except without doomscrolling. On Reddit I would follow communities for hobbies and have discussions about the hobby, and I’d like to do the same here. I would also doomscroll news and all the outraged comments on the news, and I would very much not like to do the same thing here.

On Kbin, there isn’t an easily-accessible Discovery feed, which is where I would click and fall into the doomscrolling and people yelling at the news. Once it gets implemented for those who want it, I dearly hope we can hide it. Out of sight, out of mind. Yes, I know it’s my own fault for clicking the Discovery button in the first place. I’ll stick to the magazines I /sub to, thank you very much. I can find new interests perfectly well through real-life friends, and learn about the news from actual news articles.

  • I forgot to say this in my original comment: the extremely frustrating part is that they did protest. They shut down the sub on Reddit. But they won’t do the actual effective way to hurt Reddit: by moving to its alternatives, and/or helping those who moved.

I get it, it’s just Reddit, it’s not like going to the website is breaking a real picket line workers made to get better wages, but it’s still frustrating.

  • It’s kind of frustrating that Reddit and Discord don’t want to do anything with us. It would help numbers-wise, but no, stay on Discord which is bad for searching and Reddit where we tried to have an exodus from. Now all the content is on Reddit and all we have is reposts. Which encourages people to go crawling back to Reddit if they want content and aren’t hardcore principled about staying off.

Which includes me: I keep trying to be active on the Fediverse and to help it grow, but there are lots of niche communities there that don’t exist here. I’d make them myself but I’m very much not cut out for a moderation role.

I know I should make more content myself. However, I’m not seeing much drama in my hobbies right now despite heavily immersing myself in them. I could actively look for drama in hobbies I don’t participate in to write up here, but honestly I don’t feel like it.

  • I do not use any plugins, so I don't know where you are going wrong. I can tell you how to get left-aligned math when you use $$...$$ blocks though!

    $$\begin{flalign}mathgoeshere&&\end{flalign}$$

  • Seconding. Learned to knit poorly with my grandmother, and crochet was very hard to figure out. All the videos I watched did not work out because the tutorial maker’s hands kept blocking what I needed to see. Maybe I should look back into crochet again.

  • I’m not into Lolita fashion myself, but this seems a similar to a discussion I saw about Dungeons & Dragons. Why spend all that time homebrewing a bunch of new systems and rules for situations when there’s another TTRPG system that already has systems and rules for those situations? Because some peoples’ enjoyment comes from tinkering with an existing product, adding onto it. They also get a starting point instead of having to build a whole new TTRPG, design and sew an entire new dress, for themselves. For some, it’s easier to see a pretty dress and change it to fit yourself than it is to think of a design for a pretty dress you’ll love as much. It’s easier to start a Dungeons & Dragons campaign and add on rules to tack onto it than to come up with a whole new campaign or rule set yourself, or to come up with the same campaign idea with the other TTRPG’s world as a basis.

  • I like this idea, would probably do well if proposed on the kbin codeberg as well.

I really hope we don’t force users who sign up to pick one of a few preselected communities to subscribe to. No Skip button, no option to search for other communities, you must select some communities from this small list in order to move on. I’ve seen the same pattern in habit tracker apps with preselected habits instead of communities, and likely in other contexts that I’m forgetting right now. Walk the user through a tutorial to get them up and running as soon as possible, but no option to skip it or customize anything if you’re tech-savvy and don’t like the default options, and don’t need to be handheld through. It was always incredibly annoying.

  • Hey, I’m an onlooker and really appreciate you answering these questions. I read once that debates/arguments may not change the minds of the participants, but they do change the minds of onlookers.

If OP is legit, thanks for the answers, it probably feels bad to ask questions and come away with zero answers and several accusations of being something you are not. If OP is a PR infiltrator, you’re probably assuaging doubts Meta tried to plant with this post in regards to taking a hard anti-Meta stance and fully defederating.
