Thanks! Appreciate the support, makes the effort worth it :)
NextCloud is in the Other Options section! It also gets a special feature in the Photo Apps guide :)

PurchaseWithPurpose Weekly Lounge
A weekly thread where you can share and chat through your progress, challenges and anything in between!
This movement is not a sprint; it is a marathon. It isn't about one tool, it is about all services, products, and just supporting better businesses. Given the scale of this task, I thought a space like this might be helpful while I work on something bigger!
Few ideas of things you might want to share:
- Any successes this week? New tool switched or product discovered?
- Any challenges and failures you might have had? You aren't alone!
- Got any questions on how certain new tools work?
- Companies you want to shout-out for doing something good? Or the opposite!
- Movements you feel that more people should support?
- Guides or articles you found particularly useful or helpful?
These could also be their own posts, but sometimes it's easier to make a quick comment.
canva.com :) I'd highly recommend it.
Thanks for bringing them up! Good to highlight these smaller players.

Minimal changes from the previous one, besides minor cosmetic updates. But one that I am incredibly proud of as I learned about so many new amazing new options.

You can check out Soundiiz
I see there might be some unofficial apps... But maybe ask in !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world a few Linux lovers there, that might be able to help :)
Sadly I don't have that answer on the top of my head. Maybe ask in !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world to whether others might be able to help.
If DDGs is working, then no reason not to change. However, Qwant and Kagi often come up as top contendors.
Excellent question! Qobuz should be and I believe TIDal /Deezer as well. But feel free to create a post on !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world for more exposure :)
I think it does! Although you might want to check out iBroadcast for a few extra features :)
The problem with that philosophy is that SearXNG is an aggregator, so if everyone moved to them... who would be paying for the engines that it aggregates?
I agree that no one should ever support a company. But rather establish a set of principles that you want the companies you use to follow, and show no loyalty if they break this.
It is actually the philosophy of !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world.
It isn't marked as less private. It is grayed out because it is not based in Europe. I personally use them as I find them the best option with what is out there.
Ecosia is a better balance between experience and independence. Mojeek sadly will be a hit in terms of quality of results.
Qwant is the closest to being independent and Non-US.... I was recently told about StartPage being bought out by System1 (A US company)
For Search, it is about finding the least bad option and hope that they will become more independent. Mojeek (fully independent but poor quality) or Qwant (building own index, but dependent on Bing)
In the PrivateSearch section, but greyed out as they are not an EU based company.
Yup! It is noted in the highlighted text in red. I've had several people respond that they didn't know about it, and would be making the switch away :)

Is it time for a website? With some stats
Reasons until now
Increasingly, every time a new guide is shared, people ask for a link or struggle with the image itself. I've avoided that because 1) I didn't know (and still don't) whether this would turn into anything substantial. 2) I felt Reddit, Lemmy and other communities were good enough as a platform.
Is now the right time (some stats)
It appears that there is a strong and continued interest in finding alternatives that might justify putting more time into it.
- Reddit shows 1M+ views across all posts over the last 1-2 months
- Although this will be inflated, this doesn't include other platforms such as Lemmy (no stats here), BlueSky and LinkedIn (apparently was posted there a few times)
- There has been a lot of engagement with people asking questions - 10k+ comments
- The movement was growing at about 1k per week - not bad!
- It is becoming challenging to have all the different versions up-to-date and easily accessible
Benefits of a site
- Easier to mai
