Canadian b-boy Phil Wizard takes gold in Olympic breaking final
  • I'm saying people won't be represented. Not just disappointed. Representation is important. That's my argument. I said it very clearly. Representation isn't problematic and my argument is literally that I think representation is more important than the risk of cultural appropriation and exclusion. Tucking away minorities to save them from cultural appropriation isn't it. Its infantalizing. Also, we can fight for inclusion and representation and still call out cultural appropriation when it occurs.

We'll push them Left after they're elected!
  • Because its more realistic that the GOP is a wolf and telling the sheep straight up it will eat them. Then the dems would be a bear saying it will become vegetarian if elected. Sure, a bear will eat a sheep if given the chance, but is more likely to sustain its self on scavenging.

Something something if I had to pick a Republican or a bear, I'd pick the bear.

  • So then they should never have the chance to perform their sports at the Olympics or on an international stage? Representation matters. It wasn't just white ladies break dancing at the Olympics.

At massive Vegas rally, Harris energizes Democrats, pledges to end tax on tips - The Nevada Independent
  • Those people already aren't paying taxes on tips. When I waitressed, I reported all of my tips and ended up owing so much at tax season. When I complained, everyone asked me why I was reporting my tips.

  • I think its a way to argue that sports developed by certain groups shouldn't be allowed in the Olympics because then those who didn't traditionally develop said sport might compete in them. It results in exclusion, which is worse than the risk of cultural appropriation IMO.

Farmers in Africa say their soil is dying and chemical fertilizers are in part to blame
  • Hmm, it seemed to be a problem with subsistence crops too. We were working on black rot resistance in sukuma wiki which isn't a cash crop. We were working on resistance specifically because it reduced the need to rotate crops. People could grow it more continuously without risking yield loss.

Farmers in Africa say their soil is dying and chemical fertilizers are in part to blame
  • Years ago I went to Kenya and Tanzania to asses some fields for trials of new cultivars my group was developing. There were a lot of issues with people seeing a yearly decrease in crop yield. But the major issue was actually the lack of crop rotation causing a buildup of disease in the soil which was weakening the plants each year.

I don't know this guy or his field. And, not carefully fertilizing fields can cause root burn for sure. But poor agricultural yield in Africa is definitely impacted by poor crop rotation.

Texas woman arrested for allegedly attempting to drown 3-year-old Palestinian Muslim child in possible hate crime
  • On the ADL, you're right. I had historically been under the impression they were credible and haven't update my information because I was trusting NPR. Thank you. But, my point still stands. 2020 onwards has seen a huge uptick in hate crimes targeted towards Jewish people outside of the ADLs statements. Pew research has also covered the issue: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/03/17/anti-jewish-harassment-occurred-in-94-countries-in-2020-up-from-earlier-years/

I am also against the shift to blame Muslims. I'm only taking issue with trying to diminish the rise in antisemitism.

  • There's a lot of complexities with different groups downplaying and exadurtating. I won't deny mass disinformation in today's politics and current events. But I'm not going to diminish how a group feels about prejduece against them when they have experienced a mass shooting in 2018, 2 targeted deaths in 2023, a firebombing at a synagog in 2023, and more. The ADL, a pretty credible group (apparently not really), reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in 2022, before the conflict in Palestine gained attention and the Israeli government started ramping up their propaganda machine. Bottom line, I don't want to make this some kind of competition, especially on a post where we should be focusing on the abhorrent treatment of this Palestinian child, but antisemitism is a problem too and I don't think its OK to rug sweep the issues either are facing right now.

But I'm not going to diminish how a group feels about prejduece against them when they have experienced over 13 targeted deaths across at least two instances in 2023. • What this woman did was a heinous hate crime. But this isn't the oppression Olympics. There has been a rise in antisemitism too. No need to diminish that in order to assert that hate crimes against Palestinian people is bad.

There are few things fascists hate as much as antifascist coalitions
  • If genocide is a red line for voting than every citizen who has voted within our life time would have crossed it. Our whole political system upholds genocide from local to presidential. A red line and acceptable are not actual synonyms like you are inferring. I do things I don't find acceptable all the time because they are better than the other option and its less acceptable to allow the alternative to happen. I can have gencodie and fascism in america or just genocide. Neither is acceptable. One will happen whether I make a decision or not.

  • There is no red line. Things change. Society and humanity isn't static . what was acceptable in the past isn't anymore and what is acceptable now was not in the past. I am not an absolutist.

You do what you think will functionally lead to the best possible outcome now.

  • I'm far left. Anti capitalist. Anti authoritarian. But, there are groups on the left or masking of leftists very heavily pushing people not to vote for joe biden in the upcoming elections. They, whether real leftists or not, are not just protesting. I don't love joe biden. I didn't even vote for him the first time. I knew he would win my state and voted 3rd party. But mass rhetoric to protest vote for no one or someone else risks leaving us with donald trump.
