Mexico will amend its constitution this weekend to require all judges to be elected
  • The way US politics has gone the last 30 years, the advisory board would be politicized and polarized within 3 election cycles, no matter how the board itself is selected.

Democrats who urged Biden to exit race say Harris is exceeding expectations
  • I've had a similar thought about it. The timing of him dropping out was near perfect in hindsight, right after the Republicans locked Trump and Vance in and taking all of the wind out of their sails right when they were eyeing the finish line. If someone planned that far in advance they'll definitely deserve to gloat!

This is a bigger culture shock than the metric vs imperial system to me.
  • I think of the first literal floor at the bottom of the building as the first floor, because it's the first floor I see and touch when entering the building. Then when I go up 1 staircase, I encounter the second floor I have seen in that building, so I think of it as the second floor. 1 floor + 1 flight of stairs = 2 total floors, and I'm now standing on the second of those 2.

Saying ground floor feels weird to me because it's not associated with a number, it's a G, when every other floor of the building is associated with a number. I've never used G to represent 1 or 0 in any other context.

It's literally just two correct but different ways of looking at something and we can talk in circles about it all day. If I had grown up outside of the US, I'm sure calling the first floor the ground floor would make more sense to me.

Taylor Swift Drove Nearly 338K People to Vote.gov With Kamala Harris Endorsement Post
  • 338k people suddenly registering in one day is news.

As a journalist, the logical question when writing that article would be "why did so many people register suddenly?" And so you write that part into the article/headline to add context for the reader who will probably have that same question.

Otherwise people say "what a shit article, why is this on the front page of Lemmy? I can look up that number for myself"

    Kamala Harris Broke Donald Trump
  • Very interesting that you think people don't need help with childcare or affording housing. That's a really nice and privileged bubble that you live in, I hope for your sake it never pops.

Harris answered the questions she was asked, and she was dealing with a non-participant flinging poo as her opponent. She couldn't possibly bring up every subject you wanted her to in the time she was given, especially since a lot of that time ended up going to Trump while he screeched over her and the moderators.

Trump refuses to say if he wants Ukraine to win the war
  • Here's the official statement

The US business that was implicated has been named as Tenet Media, which employs Tim Pool and Benny Johnson, noted Trump supporters. Each of whom was being paid $100s of thousands of dollars by Tenet, who was in turn being paid directly by Russia. Tenet has since shut down and the creators are lawyering up.

Here's an article from BBC giving more details about who was involved, with quotes from the conservative influencers that took the money, and from the DOJ. I will put some quotes below but I strongly suggest you read the whole thing because it does seem like you personally have fallen victim to this Russian propaganda.

“While the views expressed in the videos are not uniform, the subject matter and content of the videos are often consistent with the Government of Russia’s interest in amplifying U.S. domestic divisions in order to weaken U.S. opposition to core Government of Russia interests, such as its ongoing war in Ukraine,”

The platform's two founders "admitted to each other in their private communications that their 'investors' were, in truth and in fact, the 'Russians'", the indictment says

Editing to add the actual indictment for you, since we care a lot about sources in this thread! https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1366266/dl

Trump refuses to say if he wants Ukraine to win the war
  • I know you quoted Putin's own words, that was my whole point lol. He said those words in response to the US GOVERNMENT saying that he is paying conservative influencers to influence the US election.

So, which source do you believe, Putin, or the US government? Go on

Trump refuses to say if he wants Ukraine to win the war
  • He is in a LOT of debt, financially and politically, to Russia. And he also is desperate to win, because if he loses he's going to jail. He'll do anything Putin wants him to

Trump refuses to say if he wants Ukraine to win the war
  • Here's a guy who believes things that come out of Putin's mouth, over his own eyes and his own government.

Remind me, which side just got busted for being literally paid by Russia to post pro-russian propaganda about the election and Ukraine? Wasn't that conservatives? If Putin wants Kamala, why is Russia paying American conservative influencers millions of dollars to sway voters away from her?

AOC launches effort to impeach Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito
  • Acting like a campaigning politician in a tight race could say "I don't know if I'll be able to actually get these things done, sorry guys. Please vote for me anyway though because I'm being realistic instead of optimistic" and still win.

He thought he could put enough pressure on Manchin. He was wrong, but it's still better that Democrats won the runoff and that he tried to get 50 senators in line like he said he would. He failed. He didn't lie. No one knew what was going to happen. It's politics.

If you think every politician on the campaign trail is given you the most realistic version of what they will accomplish, I have a bridge to sell you buddy.

AOC launches effort to impeach Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito
  • This is just a terrible take. Is your point that Joe Biden is a secret Republican and doesn't support the policies he pushes for? Or that Kamala will somehow be more moderate than Biden?

    If so, fucking lol dude.

Harris campaign lists policies on eve of debate after criticism of vagueness
  • My guess is people want more assurance that she will actually put her foot down with Israel. The policy mentions it but mostly just says "we'll keep working hard on this like we have been".

Obviously still miles better than what Trump offers there, but I believe that's the biggest grievance the left will have with Kamala's stated policies.
