There are Minimum Wages, Why Not a Maximum Wage?
  • I'll agree to that sure.

My overall point is that to improve the conditions of the working class, other techniques would be more durable, and more safe, such as getting the hyper wealthy to pay their taxes, or getting laborers a greater stake in the profits of the company where they work.

  • I didn't say anything about America, I think the concept would occur anywhere. As another said, robber barons are the real problem, and they do so through other financial vehicles/ means.

    wacky world
  • I don't think that's the issue really. Generally dog is not a premium meat, for meat reasons. Historically you hear of people resorting to eating dog meat when times are very tough. Edit given the chance, people don't ranch dogs.

Not that military rations are ever great, but the idea that a country is using a "poor" meat in what should be a streamlined process of making MREs speaks to the instability in north korea.

Underrated benefit of lemmy is like minded people will tend to join the same instances and if I don't want to interact with those groups I can just filter the whole instance.
  • There are many that were defederated many months ago that aren't even the common ones discussed. I forget some of their names but you can review the defed lists. They are beyond the pale, open open racism, calls for open violence, CP, etc. I'm not talking about some double speak, bad policy maga stuff, I'm talking about cartoons showing minorities as animals, cartoons of lynchings, etc.

The fediverse is a big place.

Edit who the fuck downvotes this

  • The world runs on contacts, and those dollars were spent around the globe. There are examples of what you say, with mali considering reclaiming ml. Nationalization can have a chilling effect on industry, but depending on your affiliations this isn't really an issue

  • A fair point indeed, but that's not how it is. Public dollars were funneled one-way into private infra, in many cases.

Novel front-loading exoskeleton gets paralyzed patients up and walking
  • That's how tech starts. Title says it's novel. Even a 9 function calculator was high tech one day in the past. A digital one was an unreachable price for most. Now you have one bundled into another device and probably don't even use it often.

It's cool that this exists because before now it didn't at ANY price.

I've got a spicy take, but desperately want to get it off my chest
  • Hmm for the sake of discussion, it could be such that that legal tribunal was calling into question all of that history. Just because a "crime" (in this case a misclassification) occured and was propagated for many years doesn't mean it is correct tomorrow.

The point of the episode was the kangaroo court. It was that data had served as a valid, meaningful, human-like member of the staff for years, and all that was at risk. It does the very star trek thing of highlighting real world issues, in that people all over the world suffer from kangaroo court style judicial-injustice, and Picard's achievement is that much more impressive given the hill to climb. (Corruption)

Even in a seemingly idealistic futurist-future, injustice can arise, and minorities can be swept up in the mess. The federation is not perfect, and this episode is a crystal clear example of it's potential faults. (Executives with opinions trump up proceedings to bring about their own goals, essentially corrupt bureaucracy wrapped in judicial procedure)

    A Social Etiquette Question
  • Meh people are gonna come down on you in this thread for not being some perfect picture of a parent/person, but you are considering things, trying to find the best path to be respectful and decent. It's ok to acknowledge your wishes in a "private" conversation where you weigh the consequences of things.

Imo this is your son's relationship with the friend. Let that run it's course, and just read the signals along the way.

  • I was just banned for a comment that was critical of kamala Harris, critical of Hamas, pro Palestinian civilians who are suffering genocide from the Israeli government

"Rule 1" and I didn't even use a slur or anything.

Quotes incoming, have to copy paste

Just seems like everything is "this company did this to their employees" and less about "this novel messaging protocol offers these measured pros and cons." Or similar

And yes, I could post things, but I'm referring to what hits the top, 12h.

Can anyone rec communities with less of a biz and politics and wfh vs in-office vibe?
