Microsoft paves the way for Linux gaming success with plan that would kill kernel-level anti-cheat
  • I'm glad Microsoft realized allowing any company to push kernel-level code to consumers was a terrible idea. A bug at that level can brick a PC and needs to be thoroughly scrutinized before being pushed out to end users. If a company dedicated to computer security wasn't doing proper code reviews I really doubt game studios were either.

    Regarding the Future of Palworld
  • While it's great they're not going to somehow make it a subscription based game, I'm confused by something else now:

We are still considering skins and DLC for Palworld in future as a means to support development

Didn't this small team just make tens of millions of dollars in sales? An amount the CEO said was "too big for a studio with our size to handle." Why do they need more money to continue development?

  • Hello,promitheas

    Welcome to Linux Community.

It sounds like you are experiencing some quality issues using Microsoft forums, could you please provide some details to let us assist you better:

1->General System Information: Could you provide some details about your PC's hardware specifications? Specifically, the processor, amount of RAM, and the graphics card you are using.

2->System File Check: When you say you automatically checked system files, did you use the built-in System File Checker (SFC) tool? Did it report any issues, or did it indicate that everything was fine?

3->Event Viewer: In the Event Manager, can you provide more specific details about the critical errors you see? For example, the exact error messages and any associated error codes.

Have you researched the specific error messages you found in the Event Manager (e.g., Application Error, Application Hang, Windows Error Reporting, DbxSvc, DistributedCOM, nvlddmkm)? Understanding these errors can often provide clues about the root cause of the problem. In the meantime, are you getting a blue screen on your device, and if it's convenient, try to see if a small dump file has been generated in the corresponding path, which you can upload and share with me-<Read small memory dump files - Windows Client | Microsoft Learn>

4->Cooling and Hardware Issues: Have you noticed any unusual temperature increases while running games or any other hardware-related issues like unusual fan noises or system freezes?

5->Rollback to Previous Windows Version: If the issue started immediately after switching to Windows 11, have you considered rolling back to your previous Windows version temporarily to see if the crashes persist?

The five points of detail above are intended to give me a better understanding of the situation so that I can give potential advice and solutions.

    Best regards,

Deadlock gives me the same feeling Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 did before they consumed my life
  • I just got it and have already put dozens of hours into it. I can definitely see it being the next big multiplayer game.

However, I already see some of the same problems that other multiplayer games have. Matchmaking struggles to make fair matches. There's toxicity when games start to snowball towards one team. Lots of players will disconnect midway through a match if they don't think they'll win. These things are common in pretty much every multiplayer game now but I wonder if Valve will find a way to mitigate it.

Consumer groups denounce video games’ manipulative spending tactics
  • The manipulative tactics listed in the article:

    • Consumers cannot see the real cost of digital items, leading to overspending: the lack of price transparency of premium in-game currencies and the need to buy extra currency in bundles pushes consumers to spend more. In-game purchases should always be displayed in real money (e.g.: Euro), or at least they should display the equivalence in real-world currency.
    • Companies’ claims that gamers prefer in-game premium currencies are wrong: Many consumers find this unnecessary step misleading and prefer buying items directly with real money.
    • Consumers are often denied their rights when using premium in-game currencies, tied to unfair terms favouring game developers.
    • Children are even more vulnerable to these manipulative tactics. Data shows that children in Europe are spending on average €39 per month on in-game purchases. While they are among the ones playing the most, they have limited financial literacy and are easily swayed by virtual currencies.

Can't hold alt to see ability upgrades anymore
  • That was patched today.

Changes to Scoreboard (TAB) and Extra Info (ALT) Previously there was a lot of crossover between the TAB and ALT modes during gameplay. In this update we have separated the behavior of these two modes to better serve different functions. The keys used for each of these modes can be swapped within Keybinds Settings.

    Scoreboard (TAB):

    • Enables cursor mode
    • Displays Scoreboard
    • Displays Damage Summary
    • Allows minimap ping and draw

    Extra Info (ALT):

    • No longer enables cursor mode
    • Quick-upgrade Abilities (ie. ALT+1) each of these can be individually remapped
    • Can now more easily map ALT as an Alternate Cast button
    • Displays extra information on HUD (ie. Zipline Speed Boost Cooldown) - we plan to expand upon this in future updates

Hitchcock didn't make Birdemic. This whole sign is invalid.
  • I heard The Birds was a classic movie so I watched it one day. The only thing I remember is that the woman who is being chased by murderous crows runs into a bar and asks for a ride home to avoid being attacked. A guy downs his whiskey and then says "I'll drive you home, miss".

After 350,000 signatures in an EU consumer rights campaign, Ubisoft is adding offline modes to The Crew games - but not the now-dead original
  • What is the benefit of forcing developers to provide access to old games that require online functionality indefinitely, instead of just hard limiting them to say 10 years wich is essentially indefinite in terms of non-live service games.

In a choice between "you can play online until 2035" and "you can play online forever", the answer is pretty obvious. All things being equal, the indefinite option is better. I think the problem is that all things are not equal, and making it a legal requirement that all games with online features come with a guarantee those features work indefinitely is incredibly vague and can lead to situations that outright hurt developers.

If the devs need to provide a server binary for players to host a server, how do they ensure these servers only allow players who have purchased the game to play? If they can't ensure it, then the law is forcing companies to allow pirate servers to exist

How do they ensure people running these community servers aren't charging money for people to play? If they can't ensure it, then the law is allowing people to use a company's IP to generate money without a licence.

If the original version had an in-game shop where you can unlock things with real life money but the offline version doesn't have a shop, thus making parts of the game forever unobtainable, did they follow the law? If not, then devs would have to give out paid features for free.

Unless these kinds of details are accounted for, this vague idea is doomed to fail because no government is going to force a company to give up their copyright/IP for free. I know a lot of people have also said "fuck these giant corporations" but this also affects indie developers as well. Copyright protects small creators as much as it does large ones.

  • They're doing this because they've lost so much money investors are angry and the executives want to win people back. They aren't worried about law changes, they're worried about their stock price and reputation.

In the 12 years since European Citizens Initiatives have existed, there have been few successful campaigns even fewer actual law changes. If I were a greedy company, I wouldn't be worried about this in the slightest.

If ECIs are to become a useful tool for civil society, campaigners would benefit from a better understanding of how to craft their demands in a way that is likely to lead the Commission to actually propose a legislative initiative. There have now been 133 ECI attempts, millions of signatures collected, a significant amount of money spent, and little to show for it.

I've recently started using the Boost for Lemmy app on my phone and it's amazing. I was using Liftoff before but I'm switching over. However, I've noticed an issue. When I browse through communities using Liftoff I see a lot more posts and comments than when I use Boost.

I figured this was an issue with Boost at first, but when I used my computer to edit these screenshots I noticed the same thing happens in my browser!

Opening up https://lemmy.world/c/boostforlemmy I see all the posts that Liftoff shows. Of course I'm not logged in since my account is on Lemmy.ca.

When I log into Lemmy.ca and view the community though: https://lemmy.ca/c/boostforlemmy@lemmy.world I only see the posts that Boost shows! Many posts are now missing!

I figured this is an issue with Lemmy.ca blocking stuff. But wait! The most recent post (titled "Bug: Hiding all read posts also hides...") has the URL https://lemmy.world/post/6954944 which, of course, does not allow me to comment on since I'm not logged in. If I search for that post through Lemmy.ca I find the equivalent post with the URL: https://lemmy.ca/post/7377534 which now allows me to comment on it through my Lemmy.ca account.

Does any one know what's going on here? Clearly Lemmy.ca can "see" all the posts in the BoostForLemmy community on Lemmy.world. Even Liftoff manages to show all of them! So why does my browser and Boost for Lemmy not show everything unless I specifically search it out?
