AI-Generated Code is Causing Outages and Security Issues in Businesses
  • Some of the JavaScript code I’ve seen I’d call ‘clever’ because it uses certain parts of the language that are technically in the spec or are just weird casting side effects that I hope no normal developer would actually use because it’s unreadable. I’m sure ‘somebody’ used it because the AI picked up on it but it’s not exactly something that should be replicated.

    Some colleges are letting students use AI code to do their assignments. I’d expect that ‘average quality’ to get so much worse over time and I’m not sure the developers are going to be getting any better right along with it. They can continue to turn in work they probably don’t fully understand to begin with.

  • Except it’s a computer writing the code that somebody probably ran once and said ‘looks good’ for their ‘happy path’ and committed it. So it’s inevitably probably full of weird edge case bugs…have fun.

  • A 90’s Ranger didn’t even have airbags let alone side curtain airbags. One of my 2012 cars had seven airbags just for the driver. Also ridiculous stuff like backup cameras being mandatory since May 1, 2018 which is why every car has a screen in it now. All that stuff has just been slowly adding weight a bit at a time.

    NHTSA keeps changing/adding crash tests. So if manufacturers want to keep those 5 star ratings then they need to reinforce or redesign the chassis to obtain it which can add a non trivial amount of weight as well.

    One of my vehicles they welded in ‘crash bars’ in front of and behind the front tires to improve its crash testing.

  • I get the hate on trucks because they’ve become a luxury item/status symbol instead of a vehicle used for its utility. Arbitrary weight limits are probably not the best way to handle it though. Cars are heavier than I think you realize. Safety requirements and other government mandates have driven the average vehicle weight up over time too.

    Every mini van on the market is over 4000 some pushing 5000. Most mid-sized sedans are over 3500 and probably all full sized. Mazda 3 is a compact sedan and tops out at ~3400. My mother’s 2019 Lincoln Continental is admittedly on the larger side and weighs in at ~4500 and the entire car is under 5 feet tall. Doing a quick search on a 2024 Tesla model 3 is 3862-4054 pounds. Ram Promaster 1500(think plumber van) start at about 4500 and go up. That doesn’t account for all the stuff those ultimately end up holding too. The sight lines in front of you on those vans are impeccable though.

  • I’d be curious to know what the default mode is. I couldn’t really find it online and it looks like games can override the console settings anyway.

    If performance mode is the default then I’d imagine people just can’t be bothered to change it. If it’s not the default then I’d imagine people changed it to performance mode cause one game ran poorly and then couldn’t be bothered to change it again. People just want to play most of the time. Not dig through menus.

  • They lose their business license. Shut down the retail locations. Customs will seize all imports of their goods into the country. They can do a lot to make it so trying to circumvent the system just isn’t worth the hassle. Their income from that country will plummet regardless.

  • Most larger companies I’ve work for can’t use vendors that don’t have support contracts because somebody wrote that into company policy. It’s a risk management thing. Don’t want to spend millions on something only to find out nobody can figure out how to make it work. So the vendors were forced to have support teams otherwise their sales guys never would have gotten a foot in the door. They aren’t really incentivized to make it actually good. The sale is made at that point. From my experience companies love to fall into the sunk cost fallacy. So the crap support is ironically overlooked and they keep purchasing from that vendor regardless.

  • Most people are just oblivious. It’s not that they didn’t see the signs most of the time. It’s that they don’t know the height/weight of their vehicle and just assuming, eh it’ll be fine. I’m shocked how many people can’t tell me what year their car is…some can’t even tell me the model. It’s a Toyota something…it’s blue.

  • Usually the issues runs deeper than that. Most new cars are on a canbus system.

    Electronic Control Units (ECUs) are components that control certain functionality - e.g. the engine control unit, transmission, brakes, steering, temperatures etc. A modern car can easily have 70+ ECUs - each sharing information with other ECUs on the bus.

    My door locks, windows, mirrors, etc. all controlled by canbus modules.

    I believe it was Toyota that got yelled at because you couldn’t remote start your car with the key fob which uses radio waves without paying for the subscription to remote start from your phone. The car was wired to receive the start signal (fob/modem) then feed the request through the canbus system which then pinged out to their subscription service to find out you didn’t have access. I believe they have since fixed that due to public backlash.

    I’m sure people will find a way to tweak all that or basically mock out the ‘ping home’ to always say you have access. But just replacing electronics could lead to so much stuff just not working even if you get the engine running with an aftermarket ECU. Also if your state has emission testing to register your car…it’s almost guaranteed to fail.

    Currently in the United States, federal law doesn’t guarantee workers a single paid day off, and many aren’t even entitled to unpaid time off.

  • FCC is working on getting STIR/SHAKEN in place but it’s slow.

    It’s basically the security you see with certs and domain names on the web but with phone numbers. If you try to place a call and can’t provide the ‘proof’ you own the number then the phone carrier just kills the call. Also helps with traceability because now they know exactly who owns what numbers so complaints of spam are much easier to go after.

    You can already see this in inbound calls in your phone app. Should have a little check mark for validated callers.
