  • If there is no god there is no other responsibility than your own. No destiny or gods plan to hide behind, no comfort that people who suffer now will have a better place to go to when they die. You either act like a decent person now or you mess up the only chance people have at a nice life. Once you accept that, there is only the choice to help others or at least minimise the damage you cause just by being there. People who would not realise that on their own won't improve with religion. They are the kind that would only use religion to judge others and decide the infidels lives don't matter.

There is enough humanist morality that does not include god and a lot of pretty decent morality that comes from non Christian philisophy or religion. If you want religious people who really act good look at the Sikh. If you want a set of humanist morality rules that have nothing to do with the christian god look at the tenets of the satanic temple.

The Satanic Temple has seven fundamental tenets:

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone.

The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

  • I hear that a lot, that the stupid are easier to control. However my personal and of course anecdotal experience is that if your policies are well chosen and your theories grounded in research and even well informed common sense it's much easier to lead smart, well educated people. Stupid, ignorant people are neigh ungovernable. Even if they want to do what you tell them they mess up the execution of the instructions.

  • You are absolutely right. Few people ever claimed the Dems are in any way perfect, they aren't, but the constant stream of posts here that seem to have only one purpose, ensuring the fascists hold power, disgusts me to no end. "It's all the Dems fault! , because if they would only adhere to my left ideology which is -totally- popular in socialism hating America, they would have won" is not getting us out of this any time soon.

In November, the difference was clear. One party offered slow incremental improvements on many real issues. Letting society adapt to these changes as they go along. The other stood for the wanton destruction of everything as you see now.

Making sure people hate the other party, in this stupid two party system is making sure the dictatorship can go on as it pleases forever.

  • I'm a European and in my country driving tests are really hard and it takes a lot of very motivated people 3 or more tries and the better part of a year of frequent training to get a license. When I hear Americans talking about their driving test, most of them didn't even get on the road and did the test on a separate test terrain. All they need is knowing what a traffic sign is and being nearly able to use their highly automated car. The difference in required knowledge and ability is staggering.

Add to that the tendency to drive huge and heavy SUV 's and trucks that are highly dangerous to other road users and you get an extremely deadly situation.

  • There has been a movement to remove cash for a long time. Banks still have an incentive to earn your custom as there are (still) different banks so you get to choose, though a lot of the old banks have fused in the last decades. Every time I open a new account to avoid depending on one bank, the banks fuse.

In 1995 there were a lot of hold ups of cash transports. I thought back then that they were part of a push to reduce the use of cash.

Covid did a lot more to reduce the use of cash.

Since most services that pay wages or pensions require a bank account it's not that new. Personally I don't mind having digital money only, but I would prefer if the bank of the national postal service would still offer low cost bank acounts.... but they got fused with a private bank.
