I wish "they" would separate "fantasy" from "romance fantasy" genre.
  • Do you have the ability to request new books in your library so that that way you could get things you are into? There's also always shadow libraries.

Largest 100 Australian student loan debts revealed
  • You're probably right - the inflation rates were low for a long time so to get that high from indexation on a 100k loan would be pretty unlikely.

  • Probably medical degrees etc. However, if I were to do a masters in CS it would be 70k so my total debt would be up to something like 110k. Thus, if I do a masters it will be a cheap US-based one I can cashflow because that's just a stupid amount of debt.

    It's weird that there isn't a US-specific Lemmy instance
  • Yeah I assume the reason there isn't is because the general ones are US-centric by default and then everyone else has to have somewhere specific to go. But I guess if they want their own dedicated place too why not?

What did everyone read in June?
  • I've read both but Animal Farm was for school so naturally I didn't like it. 1984 was great not just as an interesting read but to understand all of the cultural (and culture war) references to it.

    eReader recommendations?
  • I second Boox as a decent option (though less polished.) Allowed me to get rid of my dumbass Kindle and Kobo dual set up because if there was a book that was exclusively on the Kindle store I can now just get it in the app rather than owning a whole other ereader. The only thing I don't like about it is it is not as good as either Kobo or Kindle for dictionary lookups. This is especially important to me because I read in foreign languages and need it to be able to either give me a definition or translate it no matter how it's conjugated. I have found the Kindle app for Android though works pretty well for that purpose so there is an ok solution.

The WoK was a 5 star read for me, WoR a 3 star and now I'm struggling to get properly into Oathbringer. I think I'm on chapter 10. Anyone else have this problem? Does it get more interesting or am I just not a Sanderson person?

Currently in Egypt and they just asked us to pay in USD cash for an added activity but, not being American, we don't have USD. We have the local currency and the ability to get that out at ATMs, but no way to access foreign currency. So annoying but they accepted local in the end.

    X280 Won't turn on

Hi, my X280 just suddenly won't turn on. It was left on a bed alone so no physical damage. When plugged in the charging indicator is solid white after flashing white 3 times. I've tried turning it on with the battery out but plugged in. I've also tried draining the CMOS battery (unplugged CMOS and the battery and held the power button down for 10 seconds before plugging everything back in.)

I'm wondering now if it could be a problem with the power button? The laptop is dual booting Fedora 38 and Windows 11 if that helps and wasn't powered off but went into sleep/hibernation before this behaviour. Is it somehow stuck in sleep mode? I have had some issues with sleep to wake being slow/finicky before.

I have access to a screwdriver set and isopropyl alcohol. What would my next steps be?

Beehaw has decided to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. I believe it was already separated from lemmygrad. I think this makes this community the largest one accessible to the most instances whereas before Literature@beehaw.org was. I guess we'll have to make the most of it!

This community is meant for discussion about the open source ebook management software Calibre. Technical questions and feature discussions about calibre are welcome.

    What are YOU self-hosting?
  • Classic useless answer but nothing ATM 🙃. I've been travelling for a few months and won't be able to host anything til I get home mid July. However, I do have plans to host a website or two, maybe even a Bookwyrm, Lemmy or Mastodon instance.

Unlike many other large subreddits r/books has not made any statements about the API changes. I did try and post something about it but it ended up getting deleted. At 22.1 million users this would be a pretty significant addition to the protest.

Does anyone know why there hasn't been anything official?

How many of you are using Bookwyrm (federated alternative to Goodreads)?

It's not quite as full-featured as The Storygraph or Goodreads but it covers all of the most important functionalities and it's federated which I appreciate. Something that it is missing Vs either The Storygraph or Goodreads at the moment is volume of reviews (ie. Volume of users.) However, your review won't get lost in the sea so much and I've found that it's been quite easy to find readers with similar interests. > > Anyway, who here is using Bookwyrm? What's everyone been reading recently?

For me in SciFi I've been trying to hit some classics so I've read 'The Iron Dream' by Norman Spinrad, 'A Time of Changes' by Robert Silverberg and also the (recent release) 'Out of the Ruins' anthology.

Of those three I enjoyed 'The Iron Dream' the most since I didn't enjoy Silverberg's potraryal of women (and it doesn't seem to have literary intent like in 'The Iron Dream'.) 'Out of the Ruins had some bangers but it was a fairly inconsistent collection for me that mostly hasn't been memorable.

So, what are you currently reading or have recently read?
