Greta Thunberg labeled 'antisemite of the week' amid anti-Israel activity
  • There's not a lot of genocides that are entirely ignored historically speaking. Loads of nations who deny them, and use propaganda machines to spread disinformation about them, but global scale denial is not really possible.

Genocidal acts are not dependent on the scale of those actions. What matters is the acts themselves and the intent behind them. The context of the situation in which those actions occur is also a consideration. But we recognize thousands of genocides throughout modern history. The Armenian Genocide is the progenitor of modern conceptions of Genocide, but the term is retroactively applied to lots of historical cases of ethnic cleansing.

The actions Israel is taking are and have been genocidal. This situation is not new. Israel has massacred Palestinians en mass for nearly 80 years. They are taking systematic actions to kill Palestinians, to disrupt their way of life, to destroy their culture, to grass their history, to steal their land and their homes, to mass incarcerate them, to mass sterilize them, to forcefully relocate them, and to cause mass scale healthcare emergencies by way of starvation and dehydration under prolonged siege and blockade. These are all very common actions under imperialist colonial regimes.

This is a genocide. The only reason there is pushback on that is because the nation in question is Israel. If this happened elsewhere in the middle east there would be 0 hesitation to label it as genocide. The existence of a terrorist organization does not provide justification for genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Man Self-Immolates Outside Boston Israeli Consulate in Protest of Gaza Genocide
  • This is offensively uninformed and misguided. Giving your very life to protest the way your people are being oppressed, how your people are being slaughtered, is maybe one of the most heroic things you can do. It's wrong that these people felt they had to give their lives. Not that they did. If we lived in a just world, people wouldn't have to martyr themselves to draw attention to genocide.

The suicide letter you're referencing in the first paragraph has literally nothing to do with the subject of this post or my previous comment. You're trying to conflate suicidal attempts and ideation from mental health problems with martyrdom. They're not the same thing. And I know that you know that, and you conflating self-immolation to protest genocide with suicide over peer rejection is disgusting on both sides.

"To advance a political or military agenda of an organization" is such a wild misunderstanding of why Thích Quảng Đức died that I'm almost convinced you skimmed the article just to find out if what he did was effective without even glancing at why he did it. If you're going to look him up, I gave his name so you could do, have the decency to learn why he died.

His self-immolation was actually a defining moment at the end of the Diệm government. Him and his peers were absolutely successful in drawing international attention to what was being done to buddhists in South Vietnam, and the picture taken of him burning is one of the most famous pictures ever taken.

  • How is ensuring his message is heard celebrating suicide? Are you saying it's better if we ignore this message that he felt so strongly about as to literally end his life? What in God's name are you trying to say? He ended his life in an act of protest against the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The idea that we should not respond to that is genuinely offensive. Your description of him as scared and lonely without even knowing him is also genuinely offensive.

I have lost friends to suicide. I myself have been suicidal. I don't know anyone who ended their lives by committing acts of self immolation in front of a genocidal colonial nation's consulate.

What about the Vietnamese monks who self immolated in protest of the persecution of buddhists in South Vietnam? Thích Quảng Đức was one of them. His action is regarded as heroic. It would be offensive to suggest that his message in death not be remembered. It would also be offensive to suggest that he killed himself for some other reason. As though there's no conceivable motivation someone could have for taking their own life other than mental health problems.

Mexico will amend its constitution this weekend to require all judges to be elected
  • I deleted my comment, not really in the mood to argue the many flaws of the judicial system today.

But it's noteworthy that I don't believe such a thing as "rule of law" is ever achievable without corruption and that there exist only varying degrees of corruption but more or less every judicial system on earth is corrupt to some extent. I made a much longer writeup responding to you, but again, I felt that I'd rather not spend my day arguing this.

Long and short, the only way the current system works is if you assume that all politicians are acting in good faith and that all voters have equal political power. Neither of these is true on a foundational level, and that is reflected in widespread corruption and manipulation of appointed judges.

  • They would be, but that problem already exists in the current judicial system. Politicians who are racist or misogynistic exist at every level of the government. Private interests have a massive amount of political power through lobbying, and those interests are also overwhelmingly bigoted.

So I don't really see that as a reason why they shouldn't be elected. The current system does literally nothing to deal with those biases, and extremely unpopular rulings mean more or less nothing for the judges. Barring widespread protest, they won't be made to leave office, and widespread protest isn't exactly functionally distinct from voting them out in this case.

Mexico will amend its constitution this weekend to require all judges to be elected
  • I'm not sure what you could mean here. What qualifies someone to hold any political office is their conduct and their rulings and how those are interpreted is by what the people believe is fair.

When a judge sentences someone 5 years for Marijuana possession, the popular opinion can deem them to be unfair. They won't get re-elected if people view their rulings as unfair.

Judges interpret law. They're not 100% the same or they could be automated. How they interpret that law has biases and their rulings can be unpopular. They should be subject to democratic election.

But I'm an anarchist and believe in direct democracy. Judges without elections have a pretty free hand to be racist or misogynist pieces of trash. The judicial system is fundamentally broken. The public deserves a controlling power over it.

‘Right to Repair for Your Body’: The Rise of DIY, Pirated Medicine
  • They have released a guide on making a CLR (basically several different pieces of lab equipment controlled to automate some of the process) and software to run on it to assist in the process of making the medications. Specifically to try and improve consistency of the medications produced.

It's a really great cause. Worth reading the article. If someone had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars cost to access life-saving medication, and they couldn't afford it, something like this could legitimately save their life.

‘Right to Repair for Your Body’: The Rise of DIY, Pirated Medicine
  • True. A lot of drugs you can perform tests on. But there is an inherent risk. I don't think making medicine at home is going to be many people's first choice. I think the people most likely to pursue this are those for whom obtaining medication other ways is not possible. When the government makes it impossible for someone to obtain health care, either due to literally making it illegal or by allowing it to become completely unaffordable for working class people, then they have to resort to other options.

With patience and diligent work it is possible to make many medications with (by comparison) significantly cheaper resources. And if someone were to do this, presumably, there are others who also have similar needs for the medications being produced. Which is how community medicine networks are formed. DIY Hormone replacement medications for trans people living in places where it's illegal for them to access medication, or otherwise extremely difficult often access medicines made through networks like that.

This isn't really a new thing, but the ease of access certainly is.

Instead of Ignoring Trans Rights at DNC, Dems Should’ve Vowed to Protect Them
  • We should never have to accept being a side issue. It should categorically be unacceptable for the political party that is protecting our rights to show passivity in the face of what is happening to us.

I don't believe that being passive on trans issues benefits them whatsoever in terms of votes. Transphobia in the US is closely aligned with American neo fascism. Transphobes are never going to vote Democrat. So what is gained by being silent about us? Like materially, how is that a good political move? All it does is make their support for minority rights seem vacant. Trump and his ilk show up to rallies and rant and rave about us. About how we're demons. How we're vile and repulsive and how we should be ostracized and ridiculed and locked away from society.

And the Democrat response at the DNC is to say nothing? How can that be a good political move? And what does that say to the American people about trans people? Our rights aren't worth any vocal pushback. Obviously, a platform of passive acceptance is better than a platform of hate. But our rights matter, and our suffering matters. Progressive politicians should be actively pushing back as much as possible against the transphobic platform of the republican party.

New AI model can hallucinate a game of 1993’s Doom in real time
  • It's basically like. Someone drawing a picture. Then watching the buttons you're pressing on a controller. And then drawing a new picture. And based on the game that they think you're playing in their head trying to guess what the next picture ought to look like. With no error correction and no conceptualization other than what the next picture should look like.

The... many limitations of this is the inability of image generators to rationalize 3 dimensional space. It can only approximate it based on what it thinks should appear on the screen. It lacks any ability to keep track of variable information. It really is more like a Doom-style hallucination than anything else. Some of the videos on that article are truly bizarre looking. I'd imagine after a few minutes every single one of them would devolve into an endless loop of being trapped in non-sensical geometry or killing the same enemy over and over again as the AI has no way of remembering the enemy existed to begin with, let alone that you killed it.

I'll be honest I don't think there is much use in this at all. It suffers from the same limits as any other model AI. Believability at a glance is not believability under scrutiny and if it's only believable at a glance then there's not much practical use in it. The advance in computational power and model sophistication required to stand up under scrutiny is massive.

    Timeline Questions
  • I realized I was a woman and wanted to transition at the very end of 2014. I took beginning steps January of 2015, telling my therapist and getting a referral to a psych. I saw him like 2 or 3 weeks later and he diagnosed me with gender identity disorder and I got a referral to an endo. I started experimenting with names and pronouns in January/February. I think I told my closest family, my grandparents, in March or April. I saw the endo in the middle of May and he gave me prescriptions of Estradiol and Spironolactone which I started taking that day.

This was during an interesting time when the process was pretty streamlined and gatekeeping was relaxed a lot. It was worse before and has become worse since then. So, from realization to taking my first dose was a period of ~5 1/2 months. I had just turned 18. But I had had dysphoria since I was a very young child. I'd already been to the therapist for years. There was a long history of me having gender problems. No one ever told me I could transition, though, and I didn't know much if anything about trans people. I knew that trans women existed, but I did not know about or understand reassignment surgery or hormone replacement. When I discovered what HRT was I very badly wanted to be on it and did as much as I could to push for it.

I didn't go full time and come out at work until I had been on E for a couple years. It's normal to do it in stages. I even detransitioned briefly early on due to self-doubt. Stopped taking hormones and everything. It's okay to not immediately be 100% sure.

I was thinking of making a community engagement post last week in the run up to the Easter weekend and transgender day of visibility, but it got lost under a recent promotion at work and a few busy days.

So yeah how was your Easter weekend / TDoV? 😊 Most of my family is on vacation so I just had a quiet weekend at home with my partner. All the drama that went down with TDoV landing on Easter Sunday was.. unsettling to say the least. I hope everyone was able to weather that storm of hate and propaganda safely.

    25

    Hello everyone,

Just wanted to quickly add that the finalized format for requesting engagement has been decided. A commenter in the other thread suggested a similar format. (Thank you @Kayday@lemmy.world)

At the start of the body of your post, not in the title, the first line should look like the following.

    [Requesting Engagement from _________]

For clarity purposes, this is the official way to request specific engagement groups. I'll respect other methods, but this way, it keeps things nice and transparent.

    3

    Hi everyone,

I've been thinking over how to address large amounts of outside engagement disrupting the safety of our community. As Lemmy is a large space that extends well beyond the borders of our community, when posts hit front page we often start getting a lot of engagement on posts by people outside of the transfeminine experience. Often well-meaning people engage here and say things that are insensitive, require OP to further explain themselves and their experiences unrelated to the topic of the post, or disrupt the safety of the space for transfeminine people.

This is a problem that I'm taking seriously. The purpose of this community as I see it is and has always been to provide a safe supportive community to transfeminine people. So with that in mind posters are now allowed to request engagement from specific groups on their post. This can be gender diverse people, trans people with unsupportive parents, trans parents, people who have struggled with addictions, trans people of color, etc.

I've seen a few people make comments on engagement issues lately and so I've decided that this course of action makes the most sense to preserve the safety of the community while still allowing engagement from other people when that engagement is wanted.

How you choose to make this clear is for the moment up to you. You can add a tag in your title, state so explicitly in your title, or write it somewhere in your post (try and do so clearly as I might not have the chance to fully read your post in time).

Moderator action may be taken per your request. I'm choosing to keep a steady eye on how this affects the community and to ensure that it isn't being weaponized against marginalized people within our community. I ask that everyone is patient and expect some adjustment to this new rule. A certain amount of discretion will also be applied on a per incident basis, this is not a rule banning all non-transfems from the community just providing posters a choice with regards to engagement.

This new change has been added to the sidebar and is considered effective immediately.

Feedback on this change would be great. If you think some aspect of this should be changed or you have concerns please let us know.

It's been a while since we've had a general discussions thread, and with the holiday season ramping up, I imagine a lot of us are feeling very stressed and worn out.

Spending time with family members is always a time, to say the least. Getting my family to respect my partner's they/them pronouns has been frustrating and exhausting. It enfuriates me that they can understand and respect my pronouns, but only because I'm binary gendered. Getting very sick of deconstructing the "them is multiple people" argument, as well as the "I'm still a lesbian even though my partner is transmasc non-binary" conversation. 😓

But aside from that, I'm actually excited about the holidays this year. And I hope everyone has something to look forward to, time with friends and family who love and accept us. We all deserve love, compassion, and acceptance, and to be able to enjoy a time of year that should be representative of all those things.

This space is 100% open and welcoming of venting, frustration, whatever you want to post here. And if you see cishet people disrupting you, disrupting the community, invalidating your feelings or opinions please report them and we will deal with them accordingly. I'm not handing out bans to every cis person who has an opinion on anything here, but this is not a space for cisgender people. If you're reading this and you're cisgender, you are welcome to post and contribute here. By all means, do so. But keep in mind that this space is not for you. You are a visitor in this community. How we feel, how we struggle, the experiences we as transfeminine people have come first every single time. I won't change that. And if you're going to participate here, you need to abide by that.

I just wanted to get that out of the way because occasionally we get an influx of people from other parts of the fediverse here and they are welcome but I continue to see cisgender experiences being used to invalidate transgender ones. And that's going to be a focus of mine going forward.

What are your thoughts on this time of year? What's been your experiences so far with family, the good and the bad? Let's all support each other through this. And what are your thoughts on how this community has been over the last few months? I'd love to hear it if anyone had any suggestions or thoughts on how our community has been operating.

I'm starting to hit a bit of a wall with voice training lately. I can find my resonance, I can adjust the positioning of my vocal cords and where my voice is coming from. I occasionally pass on the phone, and I work all day over the phone so I do get pretty regular indirect feedback in terms of how my voice gets me gendered.

But I am very much struggling with pitch and maintaining consistent pitch. It's just not happening and even when everything else is perfect my pitch will slip, and then I'll get misgendered. I cant seem to find a specific pitch and comfortably rest there. I'm also 8 years in at this point, I've been doing voice training for a long time and I just think when it comes down to it I might be one of the women for whom training alone just isn't enough.

I've done a lot of research into glottoplasty and find myself in a financial position where I could hypothetically afford it. Most accounts from people who've had the procedure seem to indicate they've had great results with it, but there's a lot of people who swear that it'll basically render me mute if I get it done. Its minimally invasive and the surgeon I'm considering has good rapport with his patients and I'm confident he'd do great. But on the whole I'm hesitating a little bit and curious what other people think. I do IT work that involves using the phone quite a bit, but if I had to take time off work for a little while that would almost certainly be fine. I don't sing and really don't have any concerns with regard to vocal range either.

Are you considering vocal feminization surgery? Why or why not? Have you experienced similar things with regards to voice training, or has training alone been enough for you?

Feel free to chime in with whatever thoughts you have on the operation or voice training in general.

I hope everybody's had a great week so far. I wanted to make some kinda post to engage everyone in a casual context. I was originally going to ask in the title "who has been really supportive in your life recently?" So if you want to answer that I suppose you can lol.

I myself have to work all weekend but its the evening shifts so I'll be fine. My best friend has been especially supportive of me lately, she took me out shopping when I was in between paychecks and even bought me a couple crop tops I wanted. I really appreciate her being so willing to do those kinds of things with me even tho she has social anxiety. Having supportive people in your helps a lot.

    Hello everyone! 😊

I wanted to make a post reaching out to the community after we recently passed the milestone of 2K subscribers! I'm very happy with how this community has grown and become a place for transfeminine people to vent and connect and share trans joy.

With the continued growth of the community and the recent wave of new subscribers we have been having some issues with trolls coming in to the community to bully or harass our users. Please be vigilant of transphobic trolls and report any and all rule breaking content that you see. That includes bullying comments, dismissive comments, gate keeping comments - even if those comments are coming from other trans people. Report them, this community is first and foremost meant to be supportive and maintaining that is a priority.

Along those lines, please don't overly engage with anyone coming here to cause trouble or to bully someone. It's not worth your time and just draws more attention to our community as a space these trolls are drawn to. Its entirely possible at some point in the future we may face brigading or other harder to deal with moderation issues. And to that end I will at some point in the future be looking to add another moderator. As of the moment I dont feel that's necessary, but as we continue to grow and our moderation needs expand I will continually reassess.

I'm also happy to allow image posts in this community, but I did recently add a new rule of no NSFW image posts. And we haven't had any yet, but bear that in mind as any that come up will be removed. I think that having image posts is fine in general, though I'm interested to hear if other people think this should be a text post only community more similar to r/mtf.

I also added a hotline section based on !ftm@lemmy.blahaj.zone. If anyone else can think of any UK or other international hotlines you think should be listed, please let me know. I also tried to list times when 2SLGBT services are specifically available.

I looked into each resource to try and come up with rough descriptions for each of them, if you think I misrepresented or miscommunicated what a particular resource is or does - let me know :)

I also decided to add a specific rule against all forms of debate or gatekeeping. This group is and should be a welcoming supportive environment for all transfeminine people.

I'm LadyAutumn and I'm the moderator of this community. I hope everyone has enjoyed their time on Lemmy thus far. This space is very much still developing, but its nice feeling like a transfem community is developing here.

I myself migrated to lemmy from reddit just last week, and created this community initially to mimic the subreddit r/mtf. I used that subreddit a lot, and loved having a place to talk with other people who understand what I'm going through. I knew if I'm going to use this platform long term, that on lemmy I would want a community for transfeminine people.

This space isn't on reddit though, and isn't controlled by or related to the moderation team of r/mtf. So things here won't be exactly the same. I want this to be a community for news, for advice, for trans joy, for discussions and questions, and whatever else we want to have here. I want this space to be community controlled and for everyone to have an influence on what this community is and how it is moderated. That will mean polls and community posts and whenever they come up I'd encourage everyone to participate in them. This is a space for us, and we all should have a say.

Also thank you @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone for hosting the lemmy.blahaj.zone instance that is hosting this community. She's doing this without any profit motive and has been working hard to keep up with the huge influx of users around here lately. She's awesome and has already been an active part of this community.

I figured I'd make a post sharing my perspective on this community and what I think it should be. If you have any thoughts or suggestions please feel free to share them. :)

www.them.us Please Don’t Get Scammed By Fake Hormone “Alternatives” Online

At least one grifter is targeting trans people with ineffective and potentially dangerous supplements.

I recommend reading the linked article for more information. This grifter is attempting to capitalize on hormone bans and medical gatekeeping to sell fake hormone 'alternatives' to trans people.

Long story short the pills are fake, they do not contain estrogen nor do they metabolize into estrogen. They contain unrelated substances that at best don't work and at worst can have serious negative consequences for your health.

The marketing he's attempting to use is so ham-fisted most will probably be able to tell right away that its a scam, but what he's doing should be taken extremely seriously.
