Customers suddenly find their new phones can't make calls or send texts
  • Anyone know why this bullshit is being allowed by govt?

How did voice over LTE end up needing carrier software approval on top of having the right hardware?

Is this telcos writing legislation for yet another ignorant communications minister?

All I see is limited consumer choice, generation of completely unnecessary e-waste and a giant "fuck off" sign to international tourists.

What was the Worst car you've ever owned?
  • Other half had a Peugeot 206. Thing was an economic write off at 10 years old with barely 100,000 kms on the odometer. Endless problems every service, high chance of stranding you. Interior falling apart, paint peeling off etc. Quality control must have been non existent.

Worst car I've ever driven would be a 2021 Mitsubishi outlander hire car. The way it handled corners felt downright dangerous, weak engine with awful CVT. Average park bench has more comfort than the seats. Sometimes in my career I get a feeling of imposter syndrome, but I can look at a car like the outlander and say thank fuck I'm not at daft as the arseholes responsible for that abomination.

New data reveals thousands of Australians who own 10 rentals or more
  • I don't think limiting is necessary.

Instead we could start by getting rid of John Howard's capital gains tax discounts on properties. That alone massively distorts where investment dollars go in this country. Of all the fucked things about real estate that has to be the one that is most unfair. Why the hell should you pay less tax on speculating existing property than you do when you work on something that actually produces value?

If that didn't correct things enough there are more things that could be done: banning ownership by non citizens, replacing stamp duty with annual land tax, incentives to discourage land banking, realistic population targets, and dare I say it; limiting negative gearing to new builds only.

More wealth in fewer hands β€” the great housing rort
  • I reckon it would change when renters start to outnumber owners.

Which is part of the reason for first home buyers grants, stamp duty discounts etc, to funnel more people in to owning. The other being it is a great way to hand tax dollars to established real estate owners.

It's wrong to say Australia hasn't had an immigration strategy for decades β€” we're living with its consequences
  • Howard was very calculating in what he did.

He made a big fuss in the media about a tiny handful of asylum seekers arriving by boat. All the while ramping up legal immigration avenues.

He knew this was good for his business owner lobbyist mates and good for increasing demand on real estate. Bad for anyone who works for a living and did not already own a house.

    Is Google Maps getting worse?
  • Google consistently routes people to make a right turn across an unsignalised dual carriageway near me. (Australia, we drive on the left).

This right turn is so prone to crashes that every single weekday morning and afternoon there will be multiple tow trucks just waiting for a crash.

To avoid this intersection and turn right on to the dual carriageway at a location with traffic lights is only a matter of driving less than 1km in either direction on a parallel side street. Yet Google tells people to go past the traffic lights to make this turn. Idiocy.

The federal government will water down proposed carbon emissions laws for vehicles, as it seeks to appease car makers who feared it would push up the price of some cars by thousands of dollars.

There is further evidence Australia's ongoing housing crisis is deepening as the national vacancy rate hits a record low of 0.7 per cent, according to Domain.

I'm sure if we keep voting for the Libor and Laberal parties they will eventually fix it right?

www.abc.net.au We're experiencing the biggest dive in living standards in half a century β€” and a recession is looming

Whatever today's economic data shows about how close Australia is to recession the truth is we are already experiencing the biggest dive in living standards in half a century β€” and have been for two years, writes Peter Martin.

Looks like we are finally working towards a fuel efficiency standard.

Will be interesting to see what the final details are, especially the year at which manufacturers have to hit zero emissions, and if it's going to be a linear change to get there or otherwise.

No doubt legacy parts of the industry will be busy lobbying for their own interests instead of the planet's.

www.abc.net.au No one can escape this housing crisis β€” it's coming for homeowners too

If we drop the antagonism between younger Australians and Boomers, will it help to fixing our housing crisis, asks Gareth Hutchens.

Not sure I agree with the title that no one can ”escape” it. I think the wealth hoarding class does very nicely out of everyone else's misery. Perhaps if things don't turn around their grand children might go from owning the whole country to facing a guillotine.

More likely once there is a large enough percentage of people who will have no hope of owning, then they will start to have an effect at the polling booth.

www.abc.net.au Population growth a double-edged sword for inflation, according to RBA analysis

The Reserve Bank reveals the reasoning behind its latest interest rate rise and whether it is likely to have to lift them again.

Economists tie them selves in knots trying to justify record immigration:

If you own a business, of course it lowered wages, give us a pat on the back.

If you are a worker, of course it didn't lower wages, give us a pat on the back.

One thing that isn't getting mixed messages is what the increased demand has done to the housing market. Albo would like all the renters to starve harder for the economy please.

Recently made the switch to Graphene and am trying to get my main email away from outlook.com

What's everyone using for calendar event invites?

I have a mixture of some events that only I need to see, but others I send and receive invites to people using gmail, outlook etc.

Currently trying out free Proton, but it's a bit limited. For example if I make a recurring event there seems to be no way to edit or remove a single recurrence. Also would like to be able to use say simple calendar widgets with it. Edit, also discovered that invites sent from gmail to proton simply don't arrive.

Happy for a paid service provided I'm not treated as a product for advertisers to market to.
