The West Memphis Three: A Deal with the Devil

  • I've seen Kick referenced three times in the last couple months:

    • Friend's husband prefers to stream on Kick. (Completely neutral reaction.)
    • Rampage Jackson's son running into a ring and smashing a downed man 23 times (horrifying)
    • Guy dying on stream from being tortured for the entertainment of others over 10 days (horrifying)

    Cesspool indeed.

  • Brandon Herrera, the man in question, is a Texas Republican and second amendment activist who would seemingly just be a normal conservative.

    And, as the article states:

During the video, the person filming commented, "Brandon Herrera for president. Yeah, I met Brandon Herrera at SHOT Show last year and he and I had a conversation, a brief conversation, we agreed on a lot of things, so y’all should vote for Brandon Herrera for president."

SHOT Show, which is an acronym for "Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show," is an annual trade show held in Las Vegas.

  • I think OP has a point: we re now in an era where most earbuds do not have the large, plastic piece that fits on it, but rather the plastic is making contact with the inside of the ear.

I also have personally now cleaned my earwax from the little foil that guards where the sound comes from..! It's kind of gross to share such a thing, right, but I know that anybody who is getting longevity out of their earbuds will have done the same... Plus these are mine, only mine, and the only other person who shares them at all with me is my wife...

So, I would not be excited to buy second hand earbuds and owuld likely personally sanitize them even if I had bought them from a store where they were sanitized already. I would not so far as to say I would not get the earbuds. If they are a steal and quite new, sure, I would... But I totally understand the OP's sensibilities here.

  • Yeah, I think I just was out of the loop when this controversy dropped, and I was cruising around some related Wikipedias today and just stumbled across this like... "What the hell is going on..."

Truly a sad thing - especially for all the fans that assumed he would be a great, wonderful person...

I just feel like it should be safe to assume that people who produce touching, artistic work are also good people. They have insight into what is good, after all.

I am more cynical after reading this article.

  • Poor spiritually isn’t necessarily poor materially, and vice-versa. But poor materially is also relative. A loaf of bread and block of cheese is a feast when someone hasn’t eaten for a few days. We used to get banks shaped like loaves of bread when I was a kid. We were encouraged to skip dinner and put the cost of it in the banks a couple of times a week so we’d feel and understand what it was like to go to bed hungry, and also understand how little it is to skip one meal so another can enjoy one. We could also put in extra, from allowance, chores for neighbors, etc. The parable of the widow’s mites speaks of relative tithes.

    Very cool, I appreciate this.

But in my view, we don’t really understand another’s suffering until we taste it. Rather than be of the attitude that no one helped us, why should we help anyone else, it’s precisely because no one helped us that we should understand suffering and feed the hungry, heal the sick, clothe the unclothed, and look after prisoners (Jesus was a political prisoner, after all). Besides, it’s not our money. It’s God’s. He didn’t say do these things if we like someone or approve of their lifestyle or termination. He just said do it.

This is a good attitude. I appreciate it.

  • lol, right. It is not logical.

I am not a Sean Strickland fan, but I sometimes find his remarks a bit disarming due to their frankness and honesty... And then I see other remarks and have to remember that this guy is not that bright, and then I saw this and thought... This guy is a goof.

  • Well, the poor will also be with us, always, right. I do not think we can make heaven on earth. Man is fallen by nature.

So how does suffering function within your idea of the world? And what I am guessing is a Christian world view..?

  • This was a rather interesting read for me as I had not thought about this connection much, thank you.

I find it amazing that a grown man and coach would call a teen girl a slut... Just wild, lol. Completely different headspace. And right to them. It's just so wildly inappropriate, and it shows either complete social unawareness or inability to control his darker side...

It's crazy that this just persisted since he began coaching in 2018. I mean, really, big red flags and the guy was allowed to stick around and do damage.

  • Here's the real raunchy stuff, though:

Tya Adams told News Nation she would attend sex parties for District Court Judge Kevin Mullins and his friends in the small rural town of Whitesburg in exchange for money or to get offenders out of trouble.

Adams told NewsNation’s "Banfield" that Mullins had warned her to keep quiet about what was taking place.

She said she felt she couldn’t say no because she feared retribution from the legal system and Child Protective Services would upend her life.

"They would make sure to make you feel as small and degraded and belittled as possible to take your power away," Adams said. "It was consensual. But it was the thing that we were so young, and then they used it against us and to destroy our lives later.

"That was just a given," she added. "And who would believe it anyway? Because the whole town was doing it. Nobody cares. They’re all swingers. It’s all a big party to them. It was just so normal."

It wasn't immediately clear if Adams had a criminal history or if CPS was familiar with her.

Sarah Davis, a former deputy at the Letcher County jail, told the news outlet she had never seen anyone initiating sex, but that the stories she heard were "nasty and sickening."

"Pretty much everybody in the county knows," she said. "But it was confirmed to me after working in the county jail, especially after being invited to a party myself."

She described the lockup as a "brothel" where staffers had sexual encounters with each other and with inmates.

Mullins invited Davis to a sex party once, but she said she declined.

"I was raised better than that," she said.

Mullins, 54, was shot and killed in a Sept. 19, 2024, attack inside his chambers, allegedly by Letcher County Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines. Stines, who is no longer a sheriff, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

  • Yeah, that is wild - you would think there is also some level of potting in advance that may have occurred.

Twenty months in jail for this seems ridiculous. The defense lawyers here must be very top notch, the cops must've blundered the gathering of evidence, the detectives the investigation, or the prosecutors were inept, maybe a combination of everything.

If someone was choking/beating my daughter to death and they only got 20 months, I would flip out in the courtroom.

  • A Muslim teenager who was nearly strangled by her Iraqi parents in an apparent “honor killing” plot blasted them as monsters as they were sentenced in Washington on Monday over the horrific, caught-on-camera ordeal.

The teen, only identified as Fatima, lashed out at her parents — Ihsan and Zahraa Ali — in an Evergreen State court after they were previously accused of trying to kill their daughter, then 17, outside Timberline High School last October, KING 5 reported.

“You think I’m a disgusting human being, well, I think you’re a disgusting monster,” the teen told her father as she delivered an emotional victim impact statement ahead of the sentencing.

“How can you call yourself a father? You tried to kill me, my dad tried to kill me with his own hands, do you have no love for me?

“My mom saw me almost pass away right in front of her own eyes and didn’t help me at all, didn’t see if I was OK … didn’t even try to be there for me,” Fatima added as she addressed her mother.

The girl’s parents were both acquitted of attempted murder charges earlier this month over the savage Oct. 18, 2024, attack.

Instead, her father was found guilty of assault and unlawful imprisonment, while her mom was only found guilty of violating a court order.

The judge imposed the maximum sentences for the charges they ended up being convicted of: 20 months for the father and just under one year for the mother.

During the trial, prosecutors said the girl had run away from home on the day of the attack because she had been abused and feared her parents were going to take her to their native Iraq.

The daughter told cops that her “father had recently been threatening her with honor killing for refusing an arranged marriage with an older man in another county,” court papers stated.

  • I don't know you well... But I will just write what is relevant to me...

I was an alcoholic, and yes, it was bad enough that I lost multiple jobs, lost multiple relationships, lost tens of thousands of dollars to drinking & gambling, was arrested a couple times, faced potential deportation at one point... Lots of drama, and I do not want to really tell the full of it, but there were other addictions involved that are more terrible.

It was my best friend's death that snapped me out of it - I had to mourn him, and while it was pushing me further into extreme alcoholism that nearly killed me, it was also pushing me into a state of heightened sentimentality and desire to honor him. I eulogized him, and after his very Catholic mother warmly spoke of me for doing so and shared my words, I felt a desire to honor him and his family's suffering by going to some churches when I saw them and lighting candles for him... It started a process of me returning to Christianity after some years of new age practices & Buddhism.

You might not believe n this or like it, I understand, but the way that I found myself again was through Christ... I do not want to embarrass or trouble you with this, or make you feel like I have some high & mighty place to look down and recommend this... Some may be disgusted by it... You can stop here... But I do believe your life has infinite value, and that if you are hitting some kind of rock bottom... THe real way back to happiness is through Christ. And I think that even if you feel like you cannot b elieve, you can put down bad habits and try to right yourself and pray to God and hear an answer. It happened for me.

You know the usual arguments. I won't insult you by repeating something painfully normal... But consider this:

I learned that... the true, genuine self is inside of me. It is not externalizable, and not found in art or hobbies. It is also not found in exclusively people like me. It's in everyone. Because the two commandments that summarize them all are to love God with your everything, and to love your neighbor as yourself, and in this I am experiencing the joy of myself and others. I have a family now, and I realize that... my life is magnified by others, and all the art, h obbies, interesting things that I thought defined me, are actually j ust about me bringing & sharing them with everyone around me....

And hobbies & interests that isolated me, literally "addictions" that are self-absorbing, cut me off from others....

I gained peace from the process. I got married 5 years ago, and now I got a little daughter, and the journey to this point has been amazing.

I owe it to... re-orienting my view from myself to God & the world around me,....
