[QUESTION] How would I substitute fresh fruit and vegetables in a recipe with frozen equivalents?
  • You've probably already made your soup, and I hope you did add the frozen green beans. You can put them right into the boiling liquid, stirring to break up any clumps, and increasing the heat until the soup comes back to a boil before turning it down to simmer. Anything saucy works well with frozen veggies. If you're going to make a fruit pie, it's a good idea to use a recipe with specific directions, by adding "using frozen berries" or whatever to your search. But in general, I mix the sugar and cornstarch or other thickener and any spices in a bowl, and if the frozen fruit isn't all stuck together I add it all at once and stir, then let it sit a few minutes and give it another stir before putting it in the crust. And I have foil ready for the crust edge in case the fruit is slow to cook through.

If the fruit or vegetables are frozen into a big lump, microwave a minute and break them up, but generally you want to use them a little icy.

He's a little feisty, but he looked cold
  • I think he's Puma Messi, he's been hand-raised from a cub and has medical conditions that prevent him from being able to live wild and also make him smaller and less energetic than most pumas. I'm not a fan of keeping wild animals as pets, but they appear to treat him with love and kindness and give him the individual attention and care he needs, although I didn't do a deep dive.

Police say they can tell if you are too high to drive. Critics call it ‘utter nonsense’
  • Seems to me driving does not just require adequate motor skills, it also requires adequate reactions, decision-making and observation.

The real barrier to development is that companies don't want to be in the position of "your app cleared this person to drive and they killed my wife."

  • Well perhaps we'd better come up with something. Perhaps something along the lines of those "are you really awake?" alarm apps that require you to solve some puzzles, but specifically testing driving skills/reactions, before the vehicle will start.

The women ‘cancelling out’ their Trump-loving partners’ votes: ‘No one will ever know’
  • I'm going to grant you the statistic, sadly the misogyny runs very deep in this country.

And I'll point out it still sets up the same dichotomy as "men fear a woman will laugh at them, women fear a man will rape and/or kill them."

  • I can understand your discomfort with "do you mind" type requests. It's fitting that the full answer would have been, "It's fine with me, but you're not going to like it!"

When one is asked "do you mind...?" it's perfectly correct in both grammar and politeness to avoid a simple yes or no and phrase your answer unambiguously. But sometimes it's more fun to lean into the ambiguity with a firm "No."

A Pregnant Teenager Died After Trying to Get Care in Three Visits to Texas Emergency Rooms
  • "Doctors involved in Crain’s care did not respond to several requests for comment. The two hospitals, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and Christus Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth, declined to answer detailed lists of questions about her treatment."

The predominance of religion-owned hospitals in large swaths of the country is part of the anti-autonomy strategy. When I wanted my tubes tied along with my second C-section, I had a choice of the university-affiliated hospital rather than the Catholic one which wouldn't perform a tubal ligation. But in many places, there's no such option, especially in an emergency.

    Spiders Rule. Happy Halloween!
  • Love my orbweavers! They stay outside, they're chill and not dangerous, their webs are pretty, and they make less food available for Widows. Just have to check that the light shining from your door window didn't bring a feast of night bugs and attract them to spin right where your face will be when you walk out.

Edit to add: if you cone a piece of paper, and scoop the whole web like cotton candy, the spider will cling to it, so then you drop the paper in a convenient bush and leave it there until the spider has had a chance to eat the protein-rich web so it can build a new one.

Alito denies Cornel West bid for intervention in Pennsylvania ballot access dispute
  • Ugh. I hate Alito and everything he stands for, including the general notion of denying someone the right to run as a write-in candidate.

But at the same time, we need every non-Trump vote. If someone really believes they need to vote for West, that's our loss, but I admit I'm glad they're not putting his name where it will catch the eye of someone who just "doesn't like Harris enough," and would loudly deny they impulsively chose him because he's a man.

Which is a better descriptor for the Republican Party, the Wrong Wing or the Right-Stealing Wing?

Seems to me, calling the GOP the Right Wing contributes to their delusions of grandeur and self-righteousness. The fact it's only supposed to be "sitting on the right-hand side of the room" is lost in deliberate ignorance. Looking for a more accurate label. If you don't like these two choices you're welcome to ring in with your suggestions. Since other countries have their own versions of a Right Wing, ranging from something equivalent to the US Democratic Party to full-on fascism, y'all are welcome to weigh in on those as well.
