What are you doing with heat?
  • What are you running hardware wise? X5690 (aka something old, power hungry, hot, and not very efficient)?

I disagree that 30C is just peachy, but I suppose for home use it’s fine. But if your house is at 25C and room raise to 30C isn’t that much… depending on what you’re running and average utilization.

    Server cabinet doesn't have rails
  • This looks like it was part of some tooling system, or production machine and is meant for that. I’ve never seen a cab with mirror finish interior panel either. Did you have this shipped off FB?

Edit: and solid rear wall? Uhh…

How often are you shutting down your hosts?
  • I mean, so far the longest uptime I’ve seen at my current job is 9 years. Yes, that host should be patched. But given its role, and network access, it’s fine. Running strong. It is in a DC. Server grade hardware is designed with 24/7 operation in mind. Consumer hardware might be fine, but wasn’t designed with 24/7 critical operation in mind.

At home, I have some nucs on 24/7, and a r740 and nx3230 on 24/7. The rest is for true lab env and I only power on as needed.

Out of warranty at work therefore into my basement at home
  • Right before they went EOL we ordered stacks and stacks of them. They’re perfect for our edge sites and match the rest of our deployed hardware, so it only made sense. Also have a lot still in production for clustering, tho we finally started to get some x50 and x60 equipment.
