Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of September 8th
  • Now that I've discovered emulators are now allowed on iOS, I'm playing through the original PS version of Chrono Cross.

The ability to use save states and jump back into a session within seconds is HUGE for me. No vendor logos, no waiting for save points. Just instant save and recall.

    Let's discuss: Half-Life
  • Half-Life and its mods defined my high school years. I have core memories of TFC 2fort with Eminem's "Stan" playing in the background. Of finding a server, adding it to my Favorites, and eventually becoming part of the community.

Valve's eventual inclusion of voice chat elevated the social aspect to another level.

    DOOR. STUCK.

Should I use Windows built-in shrink feature to move partition space to another partition?
  • Definitely don't defrag regularly because, yes, it will wear out the SSD. However, defragging once will move the files into a contiguous chunk of the partition and allow you greater success at shrinking it.

  • I seem to remember disabling hibernation and swapfile, then defragging, seemed to significantly increase the chances of success shrinking an active partition.

(Re-enable hibernation/swap after the shrink operation is finished.)

What was your first experience using the Internet?
  • This was probably 1997ish. My godparents had a computer with AOL, and I remember being blown away by chat rooms and being able to instantly communicate with people from all over the world. A year later, my family joined got our first internet connection.

  • In KDE 5, the Activities settings had an option for overriding (among other things) what actions closing the laptop lid did, so temporarily disabling the lid switch was as simple as switching Activities.

Now, in KDE 6, Activities have been reworked and this option was removed. What is an alternative way for me to, on demand, disable the laptop lid and keep it from putting the system to sleep? And then easily re-enable it again without a reboot or logging off?

The new Activities options for disabling "automatically turning off the screen" and "automatically sleeping and locking" have no effect.

    It really was like that.
  • Real nerds learned how to create SP-MIDIs and structured them to degrade gracefully no matter how limited your phone's synth chip was.

What’s the tiniest thing about iOS / iPadOS / macOS that really bugs you?
  • Apple Watch 10 removed the option for pinning apps to the Task Switcher. It's now way more inconvenient to scroll through the App List to find what I want at that moment.
