What do people that are for the first time moving to a place where is snows need to know?
  • If you don't have a car that can drive in snow, don't drive in snow.

Last blizzard I was in, I had to pull over to try to help two people get up a small hill.

The first woman was afraid to steer while me and and a tow truck driver pushed her up. She wanted one of us to steer her car, but that just couldn't happen. She ended up paying the tow truck driver more than $300 to tow her.

While that was going on, a Honda Civic ended up sliding backwards down the hill. I pushed that one about 100ft along the road until it leveled out enough to move on its own.

We have a Civic, but it sits in the driveway for blizzards.

If you get serious snow where you're moving, and you have to drive, get something with all wheel drive. Just remember that all wheel drive doesn't mean you can stop. You still need to drive like a Granny in Sunday church traffic.

Imagine being at your brother’s funeral and using the opportunity to prank a little kid. What a legend
  • My father-in-law had a brother who looked just like him. His brother was, of course, at his funeral.

My young daughtern did not know that grampop had a brother who looked like him.

She told us afterwards that she was freaked out by this at his funeral.

Seriously? He thinks the brain worm guy leaving the Democratic party to side with the Republicans is proof that the Democrats are bad?

    The bowtie wasn't the problem.

It's the person that makes it uncool.

I'd argue that the fact that he stopped wearing the bowties when he was mocked for it says more about him than the bowties do.

    Nobody came trick-or-treating :(
  • We often only get a couple trick-or-treaters every year, and this year was no different, except we left the front door open all night, which means we heard and saw kids walking past our house.

I'm one of the few groups that came to our porch, I heard one girl whisper to her friends, "that's the creepy house"

So, I guess our house is the haunted house of the neighborhood. I'd be ok with that if we actually had any ghosts.

We've been here for over 140 years, and I've never seen a single ghost.

    Who is this for?
  • I'm tall and long in the torso. The last serious car accident I was in my head bashed against the ceiling in a frightening way. Or, it would have been frightening if I had any memory of it. I had a brush burn on my forehead which could only have happened if my head was pushed way back from hitting the ceiling. Before you ask, I always wear a seatbelt.

Anyway, that's not why I'm replying. I'm generally ok with car headrests, although I usually have to lean the seat back pretty far to just fit in.

I bought a new office chair. I specifically chose one without a headrest, but it showed up with one anyway. At it's highest adjustment it sits right between my shoulders.

The world seems designed to fit such a narrow range of people.

    Rich tax.
  • Which is just "reduced staffing" in different words. If the kiosks weren't there, they would have hired more workers, built more restaurants, etc.

Except the study specified that the increased sales were related to the presence of the kiosks. They could do point of sale promotions that just weren't reliably done if a person was in between the customer and the computer.

Rose and Daisy are back together!

We got Rose's test results back on Friday, and she's all better, so Rose and Daisy can be together again!

Edit: this is what things were like every day while they were separated:

    Rose is not feeling well

We had to take Rose to the vet on Friday because she stopped eating hay and started having diarrhea.

Diagnosis: intestinal parasite and gas in her stomach.

She's on antiparasitic meds, antibiotics to prevent secondary infection, and a nutritional supplement to replace the hay she isn't eating.

She takes the tiny doses of the meds ok, but she's not a fan of the supplement.

    !

We had a lot of trouble until we figured out how to get her burrito towel wrapped correctly.

She's starting to do better. More normal poops, started nibbling hay, and she stopped fighting the supplement.

Daisy and Rose are inconsolable because we had to separate them until Rose is all better.

The gateway between the pens is closed now and they keep pulling on it like they're trying to pull it open.

This is probably a stupid question, but if I want to add a line to a PDF telling people to direct any comments to my Lemmy account, how would I specify that?

    Obviously teenager is 13-19.

"Young adult" would start at 20, but where's the cutoff at the upper end? Similarly, what's the range for "adult", "old", "elderly", " ancient"?

If someone asks for responses from "old men", how do I know if it applies to me?

It seemed like every time we visited WDW, there was some event or show taking place in front of Cinderella's Castle, and the interior was closed.

When I visited as a kid, you'd walk through the castle and ooh and aah at the mosaic.

I've wanted to see the mosaic again for years, and it was always closed. I finally got the chance again last time, and I took some pictures.

www.foxbusiness.com Former Disney Imagineer says theme parks now more stressful, less fun for families

Theme parks like Disney World have been popular for decades, but are the high ticket prices, long lines, and stress associated with the modern-day experience worth the hassle anymore?

    Where has this guy been?

When my wife and I went to Disney World in 1996, we planned nothing in advance. We found ourselves waiting in massive lines for rides and spending hours waiting for tables in restaurants. We realized we screwed up and we had to do better.

That was 27 years ago. Since then, we had kids and raised them to adulthood.

Every trip after that we scheduled reservations in advance. Every morning we wake up, we know what park we are going to. We spend about 20 minutes every day we are there planning that day's activities, and we roll with whatever changes we encounter.

I don't understand how having a plan in place in advance of your vacation somehow makes it more stressful. I've always thought it was easier to not have to wonder what we'll be doing and where we'll be going during our Disney trips.

Are there really people who insist on just showing up with no plan and then blame Disney when they are stressed?

Also, it seems like most of the Disney criticism I see is coming from Fox news in some form or another. Is that just my news feed, or is it an extension of the culture war that the right is trying to foment?

Title is my question. It seems like refusing to recognize other state's driver licenses would be blatantly unconstitutional. Is there something I'm missing?

I tend to at least look at every work email I receive. Likewise for Teams messages. If I see a notification of a new communication, I tend to check it and see if I need to respond. I don't always respond, but I always look at the message.

In various virtual meetings, I've seen other people's notifications when they share their desktop, and it seems like some people just don't bother even looking at them.

Am I the weird one? Does everyone just ignore messages they receive at work?

What's your favorite Disney World Restaurant, and what is it about that restaurant that makes it your favorite?

Without any deep thought, the first one that popped into my mind was Narcoossee's. The food is amazing, and there's a great view of fireworks if you're there in the evening.

When my wife and I went to WDW after she graduated from school (1996, I think?), we stayed on property at the Grand Floridian. It was my first time staying in a Disney resort. We arrived too early to check in, so we went to Narcoossee's for lunch.

The last time we went to WDW (2021), we took our adult children with us, and had a wonderful dinner with everyone together at Narcoossee's.

Simple question. Which distribution was your introduction?

For me, it was SLS Linux in '92-93, followed relatively naturally by Slackware, which was followed by Redhat.
