Google is preparing a major overhaul to notifications and Quick Settings in Android 16
  • I don't agree with most of these comments, except for the swipe down with two fingers. But it still looks like it's early in development, and it'll be a while until Android 16. I don't think they'd make a two finger gesture the only way to access quick settings, especially from an accessibility standpoint. They'll probably change it.

Current stock android quick settings suck. So much wasted space. Changing some settings is inconvenient. It looks quite bad, especially the brightness slider. And editing the tiles is currently extremely slow, difficult and janky.

This change improves the looks. The number of tiles per page is changed from 8 to 12/16. Toggling WiFi or Bluetooth on/off will now take only one tap instead of three. Editing tiles looks smooth and easy.

This isn't change for the sake of change, this is a fix for one of Android's weakest points.

What are your favorite privacy-focused alternatives to standard apps?
  • Forest is a simple step counter that shows you the steps you did today, with a little extra info.

Doable is a tasks/reminders app. It's not the most feature rich, and notifications are only in beta, but I love the design and it does what I need well.

Data Monitor shows you how much data you've used in your current plan, and you can see which apps use the most data (or wifi).

    Quillpad for notes.

LibreOffice Viewer lets you open word documents and the like.

Squawker lets you open Twitter links more privately, and even follow users to see all of their posts, but requires you log in with an account.

Breezy Weather is a really nice weather app.

I used to love Android but I want to move, and I don't know if it's the right thing.
  • Sideloading is quite bad. If you're in the EU, I know you can use AltStore PAL, which costs money (~€1.50 a year), but all you'll be getting is emulators, virtual machines, clipboard managers, and torrent clients.

There is another method for sideloading that works anywhere and lets you download modified apps, but it is very limited, tedious, and probably insecure. I've done it, it's not worth it. Better to stay on android or use a browser with adblock or something.

I don't think iOS has any specific limits to do with NSFW stuff, I've never heard of anything anyways.

Pirating games is probably not going to be worth it either since you have to sideload apps with the second method.

Other types of piracy are probably fine. If you have AltStore PAL you can get a torrent client and an emulator.

Signal downplays encryption key flaw, fixes it after X drama
  • Microsoft was claiming that the data would be inaccessible to hackers (which is not true).

Signal claimed the exact opposite: that once it's on your computer, messages can be seen by malicious programs on your computer.

Signal was caught having less than ideal security. Microsoft was caught lying.

Why does everyone hate Microsoft for adding LLMs into Windows and spying on users, but not Apple?
  • I didn't know that was a controversial opinion? Do you think that Apple are as bad as Google or Meta in terms of privacy?

Apple does have privacy violations, but the things I've seen them get caught doing are minor compared to the things that many other companies do openly.

The main point of the article you've linked is that Apple put the equivalent of a "Do not track" option in a browser, and it did exactly the same of a "Do not track" option in a browser (nothing). Does that mean that any browser with a DNT request option is bad for privacy?

Adding an option that is somewhat misleading isn't ideal, but it's incomparable to something like Cambridge analytica incident, or the tracking that Google put basically everywhere on the Internet.

By the way, I am in no way defending Apple. I'm just saying that everything that Apple does, companies like Google and Meta also do, just ten times over.

I believe an iPhone is way better than a Pixel for privacy, even if both are far from ideal. I'd love to be proven wrong, tho.

Signal and Threema want nothing to do with WhatsApp
  • Doesn't necessarily have to be the same. Afaik the signal protocol is for sending messages, not for transferring backups of chats.

Whatsapp actually lets you back up all your chats, unencrypted, to Google Drive or iCloud. Definitely not the same as Signal.

Also it might only take one report for an active mod team to ban a server. How long can that take? An hour? Less? If they're on servers that real people use, bots have to be banned one by one, so the spam can last a lot longer and reach more people.

Thank you to Reddit u/Thunder9191133 for this post where I originally found how to do this glitch.

It's possible to glitch into grannie's house in Epilogue by skipping the cutscene at the same time that Madeline starts to walk into the house. Here's the most consistent way I found to do it:

    1. Go to Epilogue, and climb up the step to the left of Madeline.
    2. After she climbed up, hold left and almost immediately pause.

If Madeline walks into the house, you paused too late. Restart chapter and try again.

If you pause the game and see 'Retry', you paused too early. Retry and try again.

    1. If you pause the game and see 'Skip Cutscene', you did it! Now you can skip the cutscene, and you'll be in the house (but the cutscene will still be playing).
    2. Pause again, and press Retry.

That's it. Have fun in grannie's house!

    !Video showing the glitch

For some reason you can't grab or walljump on the walls of her house. There's not much to do in there, but it's interesting that it's possible.

Feel free to try it yourself! It will probably take a few tries, but it's not too difficult.

I just played this mod with a friend a few days ago, and it's pretty fun!

It's a multiplayer level where one person plays as Madeline who can dash, and the other plays as Theo who has a grappling hook ability. You help each other through screens, for example by moving blocks or pressing buttons.

It's online, so there's a bit of delay, but it works better than I expected! The different abilities for Madeline and Theo make the gameplay a lot more interesting than if it was just 2 Madelines. I recommend checking it out, even if just to see what it's like.

Clicking Lemmy links usually brings you to the original instance of the link, which means you won't be able to interact (vote/comment). It also means it'll open in a browser instead of an app.

Luckily, for some apps, there's a better way to open links. The method in this post will work on Eternity, Sync, Liftoff, Summit, and partially Jerboa.

    Eternity (Infinity)

When you see a Lemmy link, share it with the Infinity app, then tap 'Handle Link'. That's it.

To get links to open fully automatically, go to App Info > Open by default > Add link. (This won't work with all Lemmy links, only about 60 instances).

    Sync, Liftoff, Summit, & Jerboa

    1. Download the Lemmy Redirect app:

    IzzyOnDroid

    GitHub

    1. Go into the Lemmy Redirect app, and tap 'Main' next to the app you use.

Now when you see a Lemmy link, share it and open it in Lemmy Redirect. It should open in the app you chose.

    More info

    • On Jerboa, links to communities will work, and posts from your own instance will work. Posts from other instances will not.
    • Sync, Summit, and Jerboa have an option in App Settings > Open by default, to open links fully automatically, but this will only work with some instances (~60 in Jerboa, 51 in Sync, 14 in Summit).
    • Eternity also works with Lemmy Redirect but the other method is easier.

    Opening Automatically

Lemmy Redirect has the option to open all Lemmy links fully automatically by either:

    • Using Shizuku
    • Manually adding all 1,500 links (Not recommended)
    • Using LinkSheet (IzzyOnDroid) (GitHub)

    Other Apps

For other apps, I couldn't find an easy way to do it, but there is a more annoying way to do it:

    1. Copy the Lemmy link.
    2. Go to your instance's search bar in a browser, and paste the link.

The post should show up in a way you can interact with.

    1. If you really need to you can save the post and open it in an app.

That's it. If you think anything in this post should be updated, let me know!

My favorite in the main game is The Summit, I really like the music and the double dashes.
