It's called public transport?
  • I live in one of the top 10 largest cities in the US and the concept of a functional public transportation system is alien. Gotta be at work at 630 or 7 am? Gotta get home from work after 7pm? Too bad that's too early or too late to make it because the bus doesn't run 24 hours.

Landlord telling people to enter the residence while I'm at work UPDATED
  • Landlord messaged again a second time after his mom left saying that he's selling the place. He also sent a few messages bragging about how he's not going to turn off utilities in response to me telling his mom to leave.

He messaged again. Well the felon is coming back over apparently. Apparently the landlord has more stuff he wants him to get. The landlord messaged that right after work called me to see if I want some OT. I guess I have to choose between staying and reporting the guy (I don't want to be getting charged if something happens between this guy and his gf) and getting paid. I'd prefer if he was actually sending people over for legit reasons but I guess I'm just supposed to accept the fact that 3 times in a 24 hour period different people are just going to be coming and going through my place, none with a proper notice (48 hours where I'm from, unless they are there for some kind of emergency repairs).

I'm not sure if they are smart enough to actually give a legitimate eviction notice. The message that he sent me wouldn't fly as one where I'm at.

He's basically just been stacking up a bunch of different behaviors and things that violate the tenant act here for the last year or so. I plan on definitely appealing the judgment with my copies of my payment information and correspondence from the landlord. If he tries to come up with an eviction that is for something wrong on my end of things instead of a no-cause one, I think his slumlord behavior wouldn't look so great on his part. I think it would be a while before I need to get out because he's not handling anything legally.

Knowing him I think instead of giving an actual eviction notice he's going to assume that some vague text he sent counts and then just call the police on me. All of that probably gives me a bit of extra time to save up some money for finding a better place to stay.

Yeah sorry my thoughts are all a mess here I'm not sure if I'm properly describing the situation or getting across everything that's happening but basically it's been bad for a while. He doesn't handle anything the correct way. It's like he could have these people over all he wants if he would just send a message two days in advance and there wouldn't be a thing I could do about it, but he doesn't instead he freaks out when I'm not there to handle his guests or provide them access.

  • My landlord has a storage closet in the house and he told his friend to come in today while I was at work. The front door has a deadbolt so rather than using the side door he jumped in through my bedroom window and went and got whatever from the storage and left.

My landlord texted me to tell me he was very disappointed that this is the second time in a row that I was not allowing access for his random friends and family to come over and check on the place (last time I actually was at the doctor's office when apparently his mom couldn't get in without more than 1 hours notice).

He's sending over his mother in the morning which he messaged me at 9pm. I really want to just leave the deadbolt unlocked and just call the cops and tell them she's trespassing when she shows up.

Also the icing on the cake of all of this is apparently the thing that his friend was coming to get was a gun that he was storing with my landlord because he is a prohibited possessor, not allowed to have guns because he has domestic violence charges.

Update: The mom did end up coming over. She started saying she's in charge now and went back and forth about asking me to do maintenance on the outside of the property that I'm not responsible for and just talking bs I said that they can just evict me if they want and then started screaming up until I said "If there isn't anything else can you please go". That made her pretty irate and she said she was calling the cops.

She started tossing things around the kitchen and I went into my room locked it and called the cops. They showed up in about a minute and asked her to leave and she said that the whole reason that she had came there was for a piece of furniture or something. They took her over to a couch that was probably bigger than her car and she tried dragging it for about 3 feet then said she doesn't need it and left.

The landlord ended up messaging me afterwards telling me I was never a tenant here and he's going to get proof and then asked if I could be out in a few weeks.

    What games popularized certain mechanics?
  • While I don't know much about video cards, the IBM Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) is often called the first video card and had a couple of contenders for first that were either designed earlier or released at almost the same time in 1981 and were all for displaying text only. The first GPU card sold to the public was the GeForce 256 in 1999. I'm assuming there's some in between that were not really used by the public that would have been used in movies and whatnot.

The reason why nobody was selling GPUs before Quake was because quake was THE first 3D game. Doom and other games before Quake were 2.5D and didn't have 3D models only sprites. Games before Quake essentially mimicked 3D while Quake IS 3D

    What games popularized certain mechanics?
  • I'd argue that quake did far more for 3D graphics then it did for FPS. Like Doom is what got FPS into the spotlight even though Wolfenstein 3d came first. Like quake is pretty much what made real 3D possible and doable on the hardware of the time thanks to everything going on under the hood

You don't have to fear AI
  • Depending on when you do it it's possible there could be very little resistance or security in your way in some hypothetical situations. For example let's say a court order goes through for FB to release something from their servers, if an independent person with no ties to the company suddenly decided to go after the servers a less than ethical organization might see that as a golden opportunity to do whatever would allow that to happen while still getting them caught afterwards. I'm just having a fun thought exercise

TIL that a high school in Pennsylvania issued an Apple MacBook to each of its 2,306 students, then remotely activated the webcams to spy on the students at home.
  • All right it says in the wiki that this all kicked off because a kid was getting disciplined at school for something they did in their bedroom and no details are given about that part. That alone seems really messed up

    Ah sweet!
  • the process still relies on fetal bovine serum (FBS) as a protein-rich growth supplement for animal cell cultures.

FBS, which costs around £300 to £700 per litre

That's a fancy serum made from cow blood

Also this all comes from a submission to an art museum in 2020, it's not supposed to be an actual product it's more of a proof of concept type of thing.

    I Worked For MrBeast, He's A Sociopath
  • Since nobody pointed it out yet there's also controversy because his friend was being inappropriate with and allegedly touching kids using the fact that they work with Mr beast. That just came out before all this. And Mr beast fired them, but there's a lot of discord messages that Mr beast was in on as well where some of the inappropriate stuff towards kids was happening as well

Why Are You Staying On Windows 11?
  • I get cheap hardware. A hardware intensive OS seems stupid to me. I want my computer running the programs that I want, not wasting memory and CPU usage on the OS instead.

Plus I've gotten a notification on every laptop I own from Windows telling me to upgrade followed by something saying that they are below specs for the upgrade

    contrarians
  • I'm sorry that happened. People should be able to have a real discussion about issues without attacking common sense.

So in that case you would be the contrarian that this post is talking about. It's almost as though critical thinking is good. Reactionaries may be the most vocal and abundant people on some posts, but that doesn't mean they are right or willing to take a good look and discuss the topic at hand

What could be done to make PeerTube more popular?
  • A lot of niche YouTubers say that they get most of their revenue from patreon and other sites like that so it seems like there's already existing avenues to post videos and get paid via a different site

you can set your watch to it
  • Exactly. Those in the highest positions of power should damn well have criticism. The argument otherwise seems to imply that accountability and transparency have no place in American politics

    I'm getting old
  • Solo had L3-37 who was presented as being a self made individual literally and she was also humanized with her body and movement being less stuffy and robotic and more human. I remember people complaining she was woke.

Maybe it's woke to advocate for someone having equal rights or wanting to be viewed equal to people when the story presents her as someone who is self-aware, capable of emotions, and desires freedom. She certainly uses a lot of terms that I guess people who are worried about wokeness might find off-putting.

BUT, here's the thing most of the time when she says that she wants fair treatment or equal rights it's presented as a joke. Even her losing her body and the ability to freely move and pursue her own goals is treated as something of a happy ending. Remember the whole movie where she said she wants freedom and autonomy and how she's a self made droid? Well now she's shackled inside a computer with no ability to escape, but it's a happy ending because the audience wasn't meant to take her seriously.

So in that the context of Solo the people who were complaining about wokeness were missing the forest through the trees, when the only messaging that could really be considered "woke" was something that was treated as a joke in the movie. I wouldn't be surprised if people complaining about wokeness are just people who are upset if minorities or gay people exist and they use the term to hide behind and avoid outright saying it

(I'm aware that there's more Star Wars than just Solo, but I haven't seen all the new stuff and was mostly using it as an example)

"Daily Pay" Is Just Another Way to Keep You Living Paycheck to Paycheck
  • This definitely falls into a lot of the same territory as most other gig work. A lot of the problems of the gig economy are showcased with jobs that pay like this. It lures in people who would be making $40-120 more in a week doing the same thing elsewhere
