  • Can people stop spamming the "elbow up" crap. I agree with the sentiment but if that's all you have to say just upvote one of the preexisting comment with it.

There's no value having walls of what is essentially the same thing. This a bad Reddit habit people seem to be bringing over.

  • If the resulting deal out of all this garbage isn't something decent I wonder if the Liberals last long enough for Pierre to be possibly ousted next January.

Although I suppose we could negotiate a deal then Trump could change his made 2-3 times before that as well.

  • In case anyone feels bad for ragging on someone trying to apologize. He's not apologizing he's sorry you don't like that he went out of his way to shit on Canada.

Ross posted a statement to TikTok on Monday afternoon saying he's "sorry to anybody who's offended" by his comments, adding that he felt the video gaining attention was taken out of context.

  • Freeland is a awful politician. If they're going to try to stir shit up could they at least pretend to be educated on the topic.

Freeland adds she is “surprised” that BC Ferries does not have a mandate for an “appropriate level” of Canadian content in the procurement given the value of the contract, although the dollar figure hasn’t been made public.

    https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/eby-wont-stop-bc-ferries-from-building-new-ships-in-china-but-says-its-not-ideal/

No Canadian companies placed a bid to build the ferries. B.C.’s main shipbuilder Seaspan said it’s currently too busy building for the military, and even when it has time down the line, the company argued last September, it won’t be able to compete with countries that pay lower wages and have lower safety standards.

  • Just to point out the website and OP is pretty far out there. People can find better things to back up their point or read about the problems of the the bill.

The site pretends to be free speech absolutist except for the instances the right wing does it, then it's silence. For anyone else any type of regulation is tyranny.

  • It's a 6 minute video for anyone wondering and it's a mostly bad one that lacks context and nuance.

For example the Income tax cut they start with. It was a very prominent campaign item as it was for essentially every party during the election. In fact the Liberals had one of the smaller ones and the Green party had the largest income that cut by far.

Then portraying the military spending targets as appeasing Trump. It's been thing long before Trump, it's a owed obligation as part of NATO and if it's for Trump it ain't in a good way.

    And this

    https://halifax.citynews.ca/2025/06/17/canada-pledges-4-3b-in-support-for-ukraine-as-carney-zelenskyy-meet-at-g7/

The Prime Minister’s Office said that sum includes $2 billion for the purchase and donation of weapons and materiel like drones, ammunition and armoured vehicles — funding that Canada will count toward its NATO defence spending target.

  • John Rustad does a podcast with Peterson loses the BC Provincial election

Pierre Pollievre does a podcast with Peterson loses the Canadian Federal elections.

For a dude who's credibility hinges on being popular he really ain't doing much for people around him.

  • Amazing.

the IIU said it reviewed audio from the patrol vehicle where the person and two officers were travelling.

During the recording, someone is heard saying, "You're a neechie that's why," to which the person responded, "What the f--k, did you just really say that, that I'm a neechie?"

The IIU said it "cannot condone such language as appropriate or necessary" but it is not possible to attribute the initial comment to anyone specifically.

  • For anyone who doesn't know the backstory these 2 MLA's was to nutty even for the BC Conservative's which as a whole is further right than the federal Conservatives.

Two former members of the B.C. Conservatives who have been sitting as Independents for months say they are launching a new provincial political party.

  • The product is good and the company is fine for the most part. Although customer service is noticeably worse in the last few years even for whatever they call the highest tier customers.

I found the whole Build Canada(bunch of c-suite guys lobbying for lower taxes, deregulation and reduction of government services) thing to be very off putting.

    https://thewalrus.ca/are-a-handful-of-wealthy-tech-bros-bringing-doge-to-canada/

  • Americans didn't learn from the American events. Neither the first term or even this term with Trump's approval rates going up since late April.

The notion that that people possess the capability to learn as long as they witness it first hand is very overstated. For example there's more anti vaxxers then ever AFTER a pandemic.

  • Misinformation at the current time is likely the highest risk crisis for example misinformed people fundamentally deteriorates democracy. Societies that do nothing about will likely face some extreme problems.

The recent election result was only a reprieve. Canada’s sovereignty, democracy and well-being are still at risk, and disinformation, economic inequality and climate change are the interrelated crises fuelling these risks.

  • Really just absurd to have a contractor to assemble of team of contractors. To top it off incompetent management managing the contractor.

If only we had a electoral system where we could vote for intelligent competent people instead parties.

GC Strategies did not develop or manage the ArriveCan app, but it was tasked by the federal government to assemble a team to complete some parts of the project.

The Overwhelming Case for a Wealth Tax

    Who and how much:

Consider an annual tax on the net wealth of families with rates of one per cent above $10 million, two per cent above $50 million and three per cent above $100 million.

This means the first $10 million of any family’s wealth is entirely unaffected by the wealth tax. Based on modelling of the first year of this wealth tax, the bottom 99.4 per cent of Canadians would pay nothing, while only the richest 0.6 per cent would pay any amount. This means that only about 100,000 families across the country would pay any amount under the wealth tax, with 10,000 wealthy enough to fall into the second-highest bracket and 3,700 in the highest bracket.

This narrow tax on the wealthiest few would raise an estimated $39 billion in its first year, $62 billion by its 10th year and $495 billion cumulatively over a 10-year window.

    How:

an effective wealth tax must make use of extensive third-party reporting of assets, particularly from financial institutions, rather than rel

I'm pretty glad AEHarding ended picking up my feature request on GitHub for this since there was pretty much zero takers(had a rather odd convo with the Sync dev) when I brought it up during the early Lemmy days.

This is the full 56 page report. I do think it's rather generous on the Federal level for omitting what a real federal tax reform could do along with how HAF has gone.

I also think they should have truly split out the municipal and provincial aspects. It would have brought the BC grade go up noticeably and lower Alberta even more.

  • From other parts of the internet. I don't agree with all of it but for the most part it's decent and worth thinking about.

People should understand at this point if we keep trying to point to a single thing to that needs change it likely won't actually do much or at least in our lifetime. We need a lot of things to go in the right direction to bring back affordability and should appropriately call out people who aren't pulling their weight.

    Group Primary Power Barrier Type
Federal Gov Policy + Land Infrastructure, tax policy
Provincial Gov Regulation Zoning, development bottlenecks
Municipal Gov Zoning + Fees NIMBYism, slow approvals
Homeowners Political + Market Speculation, resistance to change
Homebuyers Market demand Concentrated bidding, expectations
    Developers Supply gatekeeping Profit prioritization
Financial Institutions Lending policy Market inflation, investment bias
Real Estate Industry Messaging & Listings Speculation promotion
Media/Culture Perception Market pressure via social norms
Labour/Materials Capacity Rising costs, build delays

    🔹 1. Federal Government

    Role:

     undefined
Land Ownership: The federal government controls significant amounts of Crown land, much of which sits unused or underutilized in urban peripheries.
Taxation Policy: Federal capital gains rules, income from property, and the existence or absence of incentives for affordable development influence developer and homeowner behaviour.
Housing Acts & Funding: The National Housing Strategy and CMHC programs often focus on social housing, leaving market-rate affordable housing under-addressed. Funding for infrastructure also sets the pace for development.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
Hoarding of federal land or delays in land release.
Tax incentives that reward property speculation over occupancy or long-term affordability.
Underinvestment in transportation or infrastructure that could make cheaper land more viable.

    🔹 2. Provincial Governments

    Role:

     undefined
Land & Zoning Control: Provinces control Crown land within their jurisdictions and direct land-use policies through legislation.
Regulatory Oversight: They set building codes, development appeal processes, and housing-related tribunal systems.
Tax Levers: Property transfer taxes, speculation taxes (like BC’s Speculation and Vacancy Tax), and provincial rebates or grants.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Overregulation or slow regulatory processes.
Inconsistent or unclear direction to municipalities.
Delays or gaps in infrastructure funding necessary to enable new developments.

    🔹 3. Municipal Governments

    Role:

     undefined
Zoning and Development Approvals: Municipalities control land use and zoning, including height, density, and land use rules.
Fees & Levies: Development charges, community amenity contributions, parkland dedications, etc.
Local Politics: Local councils are heavily influenced by existing homeowners and vocal NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) groups.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Low-density zoning in urban cores.
        Bureaucratic or slow permitting processes.
Restriction of development to protect "neighbourhood character."
Lack of coordination with surrounding municipalities for regional planning.

    🔹 4. Homeowners

    Role:

     undefined
Political Influence: Homeowners are highly engaged voters and often resist developments that may reduce their property value or change the character of their neighbourhood.
Speculation: Use of primary homes and investment properties as financial instruments rather than housing.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Resistance to densification.
        Holding on to underutilized properties.
Purchasing additional properties, reducing overall supply for first-time buyers.

    🔹 5. Home Buyers

    Role:

     undefined
Demand Pressure: Flocking to desirable areas and competing with each other fuels bidding wars.
Preferences: Preferences for certain neighbourhoods, amenities, or detached homes limit the demand for other more affordable but less "prime" options.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
Exacerbation of housing bubbles in hot markets.
Little market pressure for developers to build outside of high-demand areas or diversify product types.

    🔹 6. Developers & Builders

    Role:

     undefined
Control of Supply: They are the ones actually producing housing.
Profit-Motivated: Focused on returns; higher-end or luxury units offer greater profit margins.
Land Banking: May hold land for future resale at higher value instead of building now.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
Preference for high-margin projects (e.g., condos vs. family-sized rentals).
Delayed builds due to market timing ("just-in-time" development).
Underbuilding affordable units unless incentivized or required.

🔹 7. Financial Institutions (Banks, Mortgage Lenders, Investors)

    Role:

     undefined
Credit Policy: Lending practices directly affect who can buy and how much they can borrow.
Investment Products: REITs and other housing-focused investment vehicles treat housing as an asset class.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Easy credit can inflate prices.
Institutional ownership of housing stock reduces supply available for private ownership.
Risk-averse lending discourages innovative or affordable projects.

🔹 8. Real Estate Industry (Agents, MLS systems, Speculators)

    Role:

     undefined
Market Messaging: Pushes narratives around “invest now or miss out.”
Intermediation: Agents, especially in hot markets, may encourage bidding wars.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Speculation culture.
Pressure to treat homes as investments first, shelter second.

    🔹 9. Media & Cultural Norms

    Role:

     undefined
Narrative Shaping: Reinforces the idea that real estate is the ultimate path to wealth.
Desirability Framing: Promotes specific types of housing (e.g., detached homes) and locations as aspirational.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Normalization of price increases.
Discourages demand for alternative housing types or models.

🔹 10. Labour and Materials Supply Chain

    Role:

     undefined
Constrains Supply: A lack of skilled tradespeople or high material costs can slow or block construction.

    Barrier Mechanisms:

     undefined
            Increased build times and costs.
Preference for projects that are more profitable to offset higher labour/material costs.

Corporate Welfare Is Canada’s Most Expensive Addiction

The long story short is that in nine years, over the lifetime of the Trudeau government, federal subsidies to business more than doubled through the introduction of over 100 new programs. Every Canadian went from paying just over $310 to businesses large and small to over $800 per year in 2023/24.

    The 160 page report: https://infopost.ca/wp-c/u/2025/05/canada-post-iic-report-2025.pdf

    Report key findings: https://infopost.ca/wp-c/u/2025/05/f1-iic-key-findings.pdf

    1. Amend the Postal Charter. It cannot continue to require impossible-to-meet delivery standards. Daily door-to-door letter mail delivery for individual addresses should be phased out and community mailboxes established wherever practicable. Daily delivery to businesses should be maintained.
    2. The moratoriums on rural post office closures and community mailbox conversions should be lifted. There is no persuasive case for a moratorium on closure of once rural, now urban, post offices. Canada Post already has the Delivery Accommodation Program in place for Canadians who cannot access community mailboxes. It should be reviewed and, if need be, enhanced, and it should continue.
    3. Include in the two collective agreements all items agreed to in collective bargaining prior to the labour dispute. Parties should attempt to

Summary that brought us to the amazing quotes above.

    • Mar 28th National Post broke a exclusive story where Mark Carney apparently plagiarized his 1995 Oxford doctoral thesis
    • There's only a single person of significance providing anything worth discussing which is some overlapping phrases in the 300 page thesis but does not substantiate the plagiarism.
    • Mark Carney's doctoral supervisor responds:

Margaret Meyer, Official Fellow of Economics at Nuffield College, in the provided statement. “Mark’s thesis was evaluated and approved by a faculty committee that saw his work for what it is: an impressive and thoroughly researched analysis that set him apart from his peers,” added Meyer.

I was going to leave this CBC thing till after the election but after watching this video where this creator talk about how she get constant rape and death threats for making progressive content while traditional media platforms some horrible conservative voices reminded me how CBC portrays the news these days.

But because of what we see as unjust and unfair tariffs, it’s actually caused an increase in the support for the liberals,” Smith responded. “And so that’s what I fear, is that the longer this dispute goes on, politicians posture, and it seems to be benefiting the Liberals right now. So I would hope that we could put things on pause is what I’ve told administration officials. Let’s just put things on pause so we can get through an election.”

    Current Day Canadian Media

For anyone out of the loop certain people have latched onto this thing about Carney's possible PAST assets that isn't a standard for anyone else. What I'd like to bring up one of the people pushing this stuff out is CBC.

This is the same thing we've seen Americans news outlets do where as Trump style politics has completely overtaken the right wing politics and the Traditional Media has been trying make things look fair and balanced by artificially making the insane look sane while the anyone else is held to a increasingly high standard.

Current day mainstream media is already heavily right wing dominated.
