any actually good ear buds out there?
  • I got Shokz Openrun Pro after dealing with a couple of shit pairs: everything falls out of my weirdly shaped earholes. I was worried about the band around the back, but I don't even notice it. Because they're bone conduction, they leave my ears open and I can hear cars or bike bells. My favourite bit is that I can wear them with earplugs when I mow the lawn and still hear music.

What are your favorite examples of 'media within media' (e.g., shows, stories, or movies inside of other shows or books)?
  • Good Morning Glipglorp! From the Androids and Aliens podcast by the Glass Cannon Network. It was a random bit of world-building that the players latched on to and ran with and it turned into a whole episode.

What movie did you watch as I kid which you shouldn't have?
  • An American Werewolf in London.

I stayed up watching it on my brother's black and white TV. My parents had no idea. I nearly shit the bed afterward when my brother jumped on me in the dark and yelled "raaaah."

Should one say "too many refried beans", or "too much refried beans"?
  • It depends on whether you're referring to individual refried beans or the dish 'refried beans' as a whole.

If it's the former, it would be 'too many' (individual) refried beans.

If it is the latter, it would be 'too much' (of) refried beans... Unless you had multiple servings, in which case it would be 'too many' (servings of) refried beans.

That is my opinion: as such it is subject to change should further information come to light.

What is the best biographical book that you have read?
  • Harpo Speaks! - Harpo Marx An amazing story. That guy had a wild life!

Total Recall - Arnold Schwarzenegger Nothing happened to Arnold by accident. He is the ultimate man with a plan.

  • Boromir was the only member of the Fellowship who tried to take the ring. He was vain and entitled, believing that he alone, of the Fellowship, was worthy of the ring. He was a thief and a traitor.

Boromir was a Lord of Gondor, and he wanted everyone to know it. "His garments were rich, his cloak was lined with fur, and he had a collar of silver in which a single white stone was set."

Boromir did not redeem himself. He failed to protect Merry and Pippin from the orcs, who wouldn’t have found the hobbits wandering alone if it weren’t for Boromir’s actions in the first place.

Boromir would not have felt remorse or apologised if he had succeeded in taking the ring; he only did because he was caught. His image was so important to him that his “heroic” death was staged to create sympathy and goodwill so that he would not be remembered through the ages as a thief and a traitor.

    Boromir got what he deserved.

Do you approve sex work? Why or why not?
  • Do I "approve" of sex work? It's not my place to either approve or disapprove of what other people do with their time, their money or their bodies. The question is loaded to provide justification for your moral outrage.

What's something you used to dislike that you have come to enjoy?
  • Brussels Sprouts.

When I was a kid my mother used to boil them. I would gag from the taste. Mushy vomit-balls of awful.

A few years ago I watched a Jamie Oliver video on how to cook them properly and now they're a staple with roasts and meat + 3 veg at our place. My wife, my oldest son and I fight over who gets the most.

Can someone ID this comic strip?
  • It looks like a copy of Snake Tales. The art on this one is a bit rougher than what I recall from Snake Tales, but the style is the same.

Running General Chat - Weekly Thread Sat 20 April 2024
  • I injured my spine (at work) in 2022, but didn't realise I had injured my spine. I thought it was a hamstring injury. I gradually dialled back the running to try and allow the "hamstring" to heal. I continued working. I stopped running in March '23. I discovered the extent of the injury in July when I got an MRI (just over a year after the injury). I was told I'd never run again.

I had surgery at the end of November last year. I was cleared to return to work a couple of weeks ago. I was made officially redundant last week (unofficially it was retaliation from my employer for daring to refuse his offer of a private payout and opt for WorkCover instead).

I ran a 32:43 at ParkRun this morning. I'm pretty happy. Unemployed, but happy.

  • On Monday I get to start running again. I had surgery on my lower back at the end of November last year after a disc injury done in April 2022. I'm finally cleared to run again. 😁😁😁

2024 soon! What are you proud of in 2023 and what do you hope to do in 2024?
  • After having a back injury that has kept me from running all year, I finally had surgery at the end of November.

2023: I have walked two ParkRuns (23rd and 25th December) since surgery. 2024: Run. I'm not allowed (surgeon's instructions) to run until at least March, but hopefully after that I'll be out of the gate like a Melbourne Cup winner!

Woodworkers, will you please share some of your favorite tips and tricks with us?
  • Sharp tools. Check them before you start. Check them after an hour or more of sustained use. Replace (disposable) blades more often. Sharp tools make work easier and safer, and you have the added benefit of a cleaner finish on the cut.
