Unrelated to protonmail, but related to getting the wrong guy for the job. The telegram CEO said that the cryptography of telegram was coded by his brother. (The CEO is also famously not a persona non grata in Russia which likely means the FSB has access to telegram (And if they have access, more people can have it))

(Note I have not tested any of this, this is based on my assumptions of how these things could work, it is just how I would start attacking stuff like this, if I was not ethically opposed to using them and if I didn't think stuff like this will not help in the long run (I assume they have also thought of some of these things and various tricks will not work)).
