It's funny that the headline frames it as "a big number" when in reality majority of users don't know what database they're using and probably don't even know what a database is. Such polls aren't useless but you always get skewed results towards the more technical population. They would have to create a poll inside the nextcloud webapp to get more balanced results.

This does not seem very different from runit, so you probably do things similarly. Dependencies are done by checking if the dependency is running inside the script. Presumably you deal with daemons by execing the daemon, so that the daemon becomes the script, not a separate process.

This whole thing is basically runit + some extra features. So dependencies work the same as runit. You just check if the dependency is running. If not, you exit. Then the init will keep restarting the service until it works. (Just guessing based on the README)

Dracut is an initramfs generator, not an init system. They do completely different things. You were still using systemd as an init system.

The problem with Linux is that most distributions suck for beginners. People recommend Debian/Ubuntu because they're stable but that just means they don't get updated, not that they won't break. The obvious solution is to use Arch, which has the latest version of software and therefore does not break on new hardware. But that sucks too because Arch's goal is not that your setup works either, it's that you have the latest versions of software installed no matter the cost. OK, so I guess Fedora will be good because it's somewhere in the middle. Fedora is better but their non-free codec stuff is not great for noobs either.

I think the best recommendation is Pop! OS because it has none of the above issues. You will still have outdated software but at least not outdated drivers. Just use the defaults, don't change the desktop environment etc. If you install third party software in the .deb format, expect breakage when you eventually upgrade to a new release. Try to use flathub for that. Be aware that software on Flathub is user-submitted and may contain a virus. Check that it's verified by a trusted source, not just some random person's github website.

Then there is OpenSUSE Tumbleweed which I guess is pretty good too but it's hard to recommend to noobs because it's sort of esoteric and because you cannot install .deb packages from the internet on it. Finally there are the atomic distros which have the same issues but at least they should break less likely. If you only need software from flathub and what's available in the app store, they're fine.

Thanks for the links! I think their wording on why they don't want to open source the project is quite slimy when it just requires them to give ship users the source code tarballs alongside the binaries.

Well it's unlikely a company would support every possible system in the world. The best one can do is using something like static linking/flatpak/nix. But that means not using shared libraries which can make software start slower. This would bother me for a daily-driver browser. I guess it does not bother nix users like you but I was thinking they would be potentially missing out on some Linux users. Maybe it isn't really a significant portion that would care.

So it's a closed source browser that relies on donations? Or is it Open Source? I could not find much about it (eg. a git repo or something) and just assumed it would have a similar business model to the search engine.

Depends on the package manager. It's probably easy on Debian, but more difficult on rolling releases, mostly because of dependency hell. Binary distributed software is also harder to integrate in a build system and cross-compilation to a different architecture is not possible.

Regarding the cost of the search engine, I don't care about all the things you get. I just want a search engine and for a reasonable price compared to the price of their "all of them at once, I suppose" bundle.

Paid search engine makes sense to me but paid browser does not. The browser's target audience will have a better experience using a free of charge and Open Source browser than a paid one because the paid browser won't integrate very well with package managers.

This is off topic but their search engine pricing is quite scummy. Either you pay $5 for 300 searches per month, which is too little, or you pay $10 for unlimited searches, which is too many for a mere mortal. They are trying to up-sell the $10 subscription.

That's just a feature of XFreeRDP. You literally just have to delete one flag from the command that starts the RDP client if you don't want to share you home dir. I'm not sure if winapps-org is still just a shell script but the original winapps was, so modifying the command was trivial.

The title is bs. There is no "push by Canonical". A random person on the internet wrote Uutils in Rust because it's easy to write fast code in it. Then Canonical wants to package the software but they aren't "pushing", they are just packaging software someone else wrote. Canonical's goal is memory safety but that's not the author's goal because Coreutils haven't got many vulnerabilities anyways.

The licensing part is sort of sad. The author picked MIT, because he does not care. He also said that he does not want drama. Well he did get the drama. The sad part is that I think that he would be willing to change the license to GPL, had it not been for all the childish drama and "hate". Communication is difficult for people online, unfortunately.

I used to do this (before my server died). You can for example use this to bypass Proton's free tier one user per account limit.

Basically it's about correctly setting the wireguard's AllowedIPs and DisallowedIPs. Your laptop wants to send everything through wireguard. Your home server wants to send everything through Proton (or Mullvad or aVPN) except the communication with your laptop.

(I did that by marking the packets from one VPN with fwmark and sending marked packets to the other but that is a dumb solution for such a simple problem.)

Also depends if FFmpeg supports it. Wayland is not mentioned in the Documentation.

Edit: Different comment mentioned the wf-recorder, which uses FFmpeg's libraries but not the CLI utility, so I guess that's the closest you can get to using FFmpeg. They also show some CLI usage.

last time it got posted here people dismissed it. I don't get why it got a positive reaction this time. It's a kinda cool app but also completely impractical. If you already know if you want systemd on your system or not, you aren't a noob and you already know what you want, or at least know what to search for.

If having a community is a requirement for OP, then I'd say Odysee kinda sucks because it's full of National Socialists. Though I primary go there for watching videos, so a few nose emoji spammers don't bother me.

I also dislike that it shows recommendations/related videos. That's an anti-feature of YouTube for me, so I don't want it on Odysee either. You can tell Open Interpreter to run commands based on you human-language input. If you want local only LLM, you can pair it with Ollama. It works for "interactive" use where you're asked for confirmation before a command is run.

I set this up in a VM because I wanted a full automatic coding "agent" which can run commands without my intervention and I did not want it to blow up main system. It did not really work though because as far as I know Open Interpreter does not have a way to "pipe" a command's output back into the LLM so that it could create feedback with linters and stuff.

Another issue was that Starcoder2, which is the only LLM trained on permissive licensed code I could find, only has a 15B "human-like" model. The smaller models only speak code so I don't know how that would work for agentic usage and the 15B is really slow running on DDR4 CPU. I think agents are cool though so I would like to try Aider which is a supposedly good open source agent and unlike Open Interpreter is not abandonware.

This is why I use foot in its client-server mode. It allows basically instant startup because the server is already running in the background (even on my Core 2 Duo Thinkpad).

Sure, but these distros aren't the go-to choice of tinkerers. As I said for the normal Ubuntu user LineageOS is completely fine. "Proper" Linux phone's target audience are Arch, Gentoo, Void,... users.

For devs sure but "tinkerers" aren't always devs. They can just start as someone who just "pokes" into their system and eventually dives deeper, or stays forever at the "fix a thing here and there" level. In my opinion you don't get this granular spectrum of skill. You either are an Android developer (be it Android app or Android system developer) or Android user. Maybe that isn't true but the original topic was "why Linux phones when AOSP forks exist" and I think "tinkerers" might think this way about Android.

I honestly did not give much thought to the difficulty of pulling such attack off. With "not sophisticated" I just meant that it's not complex to grasp. "You just have to pretend to be a different person". I guess yeah that is pretty difficult.

Yeah I mean it's often said that any second factor is better than just password so it's probably not a big deal. My issue is mostly that it's an attack vector that could easily be eliminated. For example if banks allowed third party 2FA apps. I think I've read somewhere, that some banks even only allow hardware keys for business accounts which is honestly absurd.
