Banned from politicalmemes@lemmy.world for using neopronouns
  • Yeah, someone with the name "dragonfucker" using "drag" as a first person pronoun definitely doesn't have the benefit of the doubt in my book.

And if you list your pronouns, you are in fact asking others to use them. I don't give a solitary shit what you call me, hence there not being any pronouns next to my name.

Video claimed to be of Russians testing an anti-drone system.
  • That seems really useful for when an enemy drone is low enough to see, slow enough to track it for 10 seconds and not really doing anything.

Zelenskyy on global reaction to North Korean military in Russia: It's a zero
  • 10 years is two or three election cycles from now. Every government we have in western Europe is far too scared to do anything when they can just... Not.

    PSA TO NCD USERS
  • like, two weeks back, my home instance, lemmy.today, was two days late on material from sh.itjust.works.

I still don't get NCD showing properly on sh.itjust.works, but I DO get new posts in my timeline, for some incomprehensible reason.

But in this case, it's in the modlogs, not a bug.

    NASA after watching Starship IFT-5
  • Yeah, they could just slap an PMA+IDA port on Starship like the ISS has, but that's just a hole with data and power ports. Those are pretty easy compared to fuel transfer, and they're specifically NOT suited to lateral forces. It also seems a bit unfit-for-purpose to make a big and heavy crew-transfer dock when you don't have to.

    NASA after watching Starship IFT-5
  • EDIT: You mention orbital fuel transfers. AFAIK, that hasn’t been even designed, at all.

They did an in-craft fuel transfer during their last test. While it's certainly complex to pump fuel around without gravity, that's only the small first step in actually transferring fuel. Making a connection in orbit that's capable of fully refueling an entirely seperate craft is an order of magnitude harder.

  • dependancy on the whims of a corrupt billionaire is why NASA (and the US DoD, and the EU) are absolutely pushing for non-SpaceX spacetravel, even if it's more expensive. I'm also pretty sure it's why the Artemis program contracted a second lunar lander, despite having paid Musk over 3 billion for one already.

Election volunteer/worker/observer what's the weirdest stuff you've seen during election day ?
  • I'm in the Netherlands, helping out at a station in a school gym. This station had three booths, with one low-height voting booth, both for shorter people, but also for people in wheelchairs and whatever other reason. A man in his mid-30's comes up in a wheelchair, we check his ID, hand him a ballot and the famous red pencil, and point to the direct of the booths, where someone has the temerity of allready occupying the wheelchair booth! GASP, SHOCK!

The guy proceeds to absolutely flip his shit, calling us bigots, racists, haters and nazis for not letting him vote from a wheelchair. That "people like us" have always hated him. For what's it worth, note that both him and me are roughly the colour of fresh milk.

It was super awkward, because the man was "punch-your-face" angry, and I was the only person there who was under 60... But like... he's in a wheelchair, and I'm sure he'd hurt himself a lot more than me. I was seriously considering just wheeling him out, but he hadn't voted yet, and assholes have rights too, and the optics aren't exactly great on that. One of the old ladies who also volunteered told me "Don't worry girl, we get a few like that every time, just let him go and laugh about it over dinner".

The kept ranting on his way out the door.

  • Luckily the home had their own staff join the groups that came to vote and resuscitated him and he continued exactly where he left off at tortoise pace.

    That seems terrifying

Everett True meets Old Nobody (October 31, 1912)
  • I have some answers (but not the big one).

A "loafer" is an old timey word for tramp, from German/Dutch "landlaufer" meaning "land walker".

The rest is speculation, but I think this is a sort of anger at nobody returning his umbrella. Nobody does this, which is why this "person" is just a stick. Someone stole Ev's umbrella and didn't return it. But you can beat up nobody, so, here's a literal strawman to beat up.

Russian army would be stronger post-war than it is now - NATO top general
  • But it would be very dangerous politically to allocate a lot of ressources to the military after the war, when the country is in dire need of restoration to where they were before the war.

I'd argue the reverse, Putin isn't ruling democratically, he doesn't need votes or approval. He DOES need a very strong military to stay in power, which is why Russia has the "national guard", Rosgvardiya, under the sole authority of the president.

Of course, a palace guard military has very different material demands, and their main use is against civilians and other military, so the level of equipment can be decreased, but for a dictator to have a country full of disgruntled veterans is a very dangerous thing.

  • There are a whole bunch of options to mark posts as read, but as of yet, I can't seem to find an option to actually hide to posts.

Am I missing something, or does marking a post just grey it out?
