1 person dies and 12 are rescued after elevator malfunctions at Colorado gold mine tourist site
  • Yeah but who knows what qualifies as an inspection. It might have just been an employee walking the route every morning before letting customers. Checking air quality is probably the most important thing to do frequently.

LAPD raid goes from bad to farce after gun allegedly sucked onto MRI machine
  • In my experience the only thing that makes a material professional grade is a paper trail. If something goes wrong and you get sued you want to be able to absolutely prove you didn't cheap out on any of the materials. It adds a lot of cost to keep batches separate and making sure none of the paperwork gets mixed up. Especially if multiple companies are involved in creating and distributing the material. I work in an ISO compliant shop and we have a lot of folders moving around with different orders, it can be a nightmare keeping everything straight when things are busy.

Disney trips meant for homeless students went to NYC school employees' kids, officials say
  • I agree that logically there are higher priorities, a child's development isn't completely logical. I think allowing them to participate in the same activities as their peers is important. Stuff we might think is dumb as adults can have a big impact on kids, and homeless kids are already at a disadvantage as far as fitting in.

    Recommendation for Email-Provider
  • Has any more evidence ever been produced to show Tuta is a honeypot? The guy who made the original claim is in jail for 14 years for passing on secrets while he was director of RCMP intelligence.

After seeing Wi-Fi network named “STINKY,” Navy found hidden Starlink dish on US warship
  • I think it'd be more for obfuscation than completely hiding it. As long as there are other hidden networks on the ship you just name it something generic that blends in. I mean this whole thing is a really stupid idea, but naming it something like "COM.NAB_ISO:4133" would draw less attention.

  • I don't think a Haltech ECU would pass inspection in most US states. I've had trouble getting my golf inspected with just a cat and a flash tune. There are emissions readiness monitors in most stock ECUs that need to show up for it to pass. The exhaust and tune i have aren't even sold anymore because of the increasing number of legal restrictions. I get why it has to be that way but it does suck for people who want to work on their car.

Methamphetamine disguised as shipment of watermelons seized at US-Mexico border in San Diego
  • Presumably enough still gets through that it's not worth changing anything. We only see what we catch, who knows how much makes it past. It would be unrealistic to check every truck crossing the border thoroughly, so it just has to be good enough.

Infamous $30 Logitech F710 called out in $50M lawsuit over Titan sub implosion
  • The problem was that if they surfaced away from the support vessel, there was no way to open it to get fresh air. So you could still run out of oxygen and die while floating around on the surface waiting to be found.

FCC proposes ending cellphone carrier locks after 60 days
  • I'm the only person I know who buys their phones unlocked. I think a lot of people rely on the store where they buy the phone to set it up and get all their stuff transfered over. Just getting a new phone in the mail is a recipe for disaster for like a solid 60% of the US population.
