Thinking about building something useful for self-hosting

Is there anything you guys think that could help you with your self host experience or any service that you wish there is a self hosted version?

Should I get this VPS for hosting a basic website for myself? This is a private hosting service that my friend's friend runs.

    Looking for simple set up DNS server suggestions

    I only want it do one thing, gives the locally configured IP address when it has the records. Otherwise go talk to 8.8.8.8.

    Any suggestions?
