I don't know whether this is only true for me or not, but I heard about chat control a lot more the first time it was being discussed a few years ago, and I only just learned about this instance now. Unsure why, and if it is actually being talked about less or if I was somehow under a rock, but your PSA is really appreciated regardless.
Haven't used Debian in a while now, but back when I did, Wayland never did appear in the sessions dropdown on a fresh install with an nvidia card and nvidia proprietary drivers. Doing what is explained in the following link always worked for me though:
