  • Könntest du bitte erklären, was du damit meinst?

  • Why just 400 kV?

At least Ukraine has several 750 kV power lines. Decreases the energy loss quite a bit!

  • That must be an awesome feeling!

Though: it's a pity the gepard's location can now be approximated from the video. But whatever, just drive ut a couple of blocks in some direction :)

  • Haha, that looks funny in the eyes of anyone who understands the subject.

But okay. I believe that regardless of how many questions I pose in order to find out if your case makes any semblance of sense, I won't find out whether it does.

I'll just assume you are clueless without noticing it yourself. That's okay.

  • By 20th Sept 2026 the Russia will have lost the war it is waging, or at least it is clear to all sides that the final end of the war will in approximately half a year. USA and China can still change this, but I don't think they will.

  • So, seeing the phrase "I'm loving it" did not 8n any manner put a thought of "hamburger" in your head?

  • Basically, the end game is based on Putin being increasingly thoroughly out of the loop.

Remember that his only sources of information are his aides and Russian television. (Not completely sure if he watches western TV as well, but I very strongly guess he doesn't)

The aides get fired if they bring news contradicting what they have told earlier. And earlier everyone who brought bad news was sacked, so every aide has been lying to Putin on everything.

So, the end game Putin is striving for is that both Ukraine and the west grow so horrified of the degradation of civilians' lives in Ukraine that they force Ukraine into what is essentially a surrender.

And then the plan B... That's awesome in its beauty: The few tens of thousands of Afghan war veterans returning to USSR caused a havoc. Back then USSR had twice the population compared to the Russia of today. And also, now the amount of soldiers that will return is 700 000. Per capita that makes closer to a 50-fold difference in the scale.

While at the same time the federal coffers are empty.

The carnage in the Russia after the veterans of this war have returned will be something previously unseen even in the Russia. While the war is making Russians' lives worse, nothing compares to how they will be once their own soldiers return home. So, just pushing an inevitable defeat a day further into future means one day more life before the carnage begins.

It's like, you know you're in for a very painful and slow death. Even if you know it's going to come, every minute you can prolong its arrival is worth a fight.

  • It is any better.

It's also not okay what DC did, but the transgressions are very different in scale.

Kimmel was faired for saying "MAGA is trying to make it look like the shooter wasn't a MAGA activist", while Felker-Martin got fired for saying "it's a good thing Kirk can no longer take part in podcasts."

I don't think either of those is grounds for firing, but it's not good to bring them to the same level.

  • I think you're making am assumption based on a one or two liberal countries and extrapolating that to a larger bunch of countries where your assumption doesn't hold.

  • I wouldn't call it "understanding" if you assume a meaning to a word that doesn't have that meaning.

It's funny in the same way as native Americans saying "ugh". If you're ignorant, you laugh. If you aren't, you facepalm. A joke that just makes its teller look like an ignorant idiot who is happy to trample other cultures is not a joke that should me made.

  • It wouldn't look burnt.

  • I do understand it's the entire point.

It's also super annoying when English-speaker make new "languages" which are just English with each word substituted by another. The joke assumes that Latin is just a dialect of English.

So, what I'm trying to hint in a subtle manner between the lines is that the joke is not among the best ones out there. Of course you can go to some meta levels and find something funny about someone being so stupid that they assume that words have 100 % equal meanings across languages. But, meh.

The joke reeks of monolingual ignorance miles away.

  • What do you mean with this?

  • It always disturbs in these articles that they say someone is from Ukraine, but they don't tell how they've been living there since 2014. A person living in occupied Donetsk or occupied Crimea since 2014 still has the Ukrainian citizenship, but has now lived 11 years de facto under Russian rule. It's a very different thing compared to Ukrainians who have lived the same time in Kyiv or L'viv or Odesa.

I would be always very interested in knowing which one is the case when such news emerge.

  • I like GNOME because it's got everything I need and nothing else. I've got ADHD, so any distractions are really a problem.

With KDE I have the feeling that it's kind of "full". I have always been able to customize Gnome in whatever way I've needed, but that's less in-your-face than in KDE.
It's also a matter of what I've gotten used to. I started using desktop Linux with Redhat 5.2, and that came with Gnome. So, I got used to it, and KDE is different. And of course, KDE might have changed in the last 10-ish years, which, I think, is how long time ago I touched a KDE desktop at all.
But, since I'm happy with GNOME – and, this might sound scary – actually even happier with Unity that I'm using now, I don't really have any need to venture to try anything else.

It works for me and switching to something else would require at least some amount of effort.
I'm already being less active with my children than I would like to, so I don't like putting any effort into things that won't really bring something useful for me or others. I prefer spending that effort for being a better father :)

  • Oh boy, wait until you here about the record of liberal regimes when it comes to guaranteeing these rights...

Are you referring to the regime of Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, or Netherlands?

  • I'll copypaste this thing I wrote under another comment:

This is a bad translation because the English word "to come" has a double meaning (it also means ejaculation or having an orgasm), while in Latin it doesn't. There's a big risk of a misunderstanding, so "I arrived" is a much better translation IMO.

Why do you think "I came" would be better? 🙃
