US: Muslim groups urge voters to back Jill Stein, Cornel West or other pro-Palestine candidates
  • What are you even talking about? They are making concrete demands, one of them being an arms embargo which Kamala has said won't happen. The way a deal works is if the other side doesn't accept your offer you don't just cave and perform your side of the bargain. And judging by the fact that Kamala hasn't proposed anything other than the same vague support for a ceasefire Biden has shown they haven't even tried to push for anything else that might satisfy this constituency.

Concord Director Steps Down As Studio Behind Historic PlayStation Flop Waits For Sony's Decision
  • I mean I also doubt the director was behind all the bad decisions that led to this. Cause this game started development back when Overwatch 1 came out. It wasn't an old formula then, it just took too long to come out. That could be the directors fault but from what I've heard it was more decisions from corporate to chase new fads like live service and more that ended up delaying it so long and causing it to become dated.

Strikes inside Russia with US missiles key to Ukraine’s plan to end war, says Zelenskyy
  • I think the main worry is an escalation not to a full blown WWIII style full nuclear exchange but to using tactical nukes against Ukraine. We haven't really seen that used yet and if Putin thinks he might lose this I don't know if he would decide to do it. And once that precedent is set that you can do that there's no putting that back away. This isn't to say that giving them this permission is bad or shouldn't be done, this is just a risk to consider and would be a risk with any strategy that allows Ukraine to attempt to win the conflict.

Sid Meier's Pirates, and everyone else in the game, are aware of the date...
  • You can still get that by just playing very small indie games. There's tons of small games out there being made by just a handful or even one person that have these kinds of little fun things scattered throughout them. They are harder to find by their nature but that culture is still very much alive in the indie space.

EA execs say generative AI is "not merely a buzzword for us, it's the very core of our business," then pretend to tell a computer to generate buildings live on stage
  • Yeah and the only way technology like this might ever get there is with companies like Google and others gathering even more data from you. Which for most people might not be a problem but I'm guessing for people on here you'd probably not like that.

There’s a danger that the US supreme court, not voters, picks the next president
  • We don't have enough labor organization in the US for a general strike to really happen. Especially considering a large amount of union members vote Republican and for Trump as well.

Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, Inc.
  • I think the fact they're going for a patent suit says they probably think they don't have enough of an argument for a copyright suit which kind of makes sense. Just because the designs are similar doesn't mean it's copyright infringement.

14% of Republicans would 'take action to overturn' the election if Trump loses, study finds
  • I think the difference now a days compared to back then is rich and powerful people (plantation owners) wanted the war to maintain their wealth and power. Right now I don't think really any powerful companies actually want a civil war. They're happy to fan the flames and play both sides to get the attention off of them and the insane power and wealth they have but I think they all know a civil war would be bad for profits. So because of this I doubt it would ever fully become a civil war, closest it would be is violent protests or things like January 6th which would be put down by the states or federal government before it got far enough to become something like a civil war.

    Burning Up
  • I don't mind decimals at all, it's more that I don't trust companies to actually deal with supporting decimals when making the switch. Plus the last time I discussed this on Lemmy someone was saying that decimals aren't even universally used and it might depend on what you get whether you get that precision or not. Either way like the main point of my post was anyways these are minor arguments and at the end of the day there isn't really a reason to use Celsius vs Fahrenheit.

  • Yeah like the metric system has good arguments for why it's measurements and weights are better, mainly conversion being easier, but for temperature there really isn't an argument. I would make an argument for Fahrenheit as it gives more precision without having to use decimals which at least in America isn't a thing for temperature. But those are pretty minor things and I do tend to agree it comes down to what you grew up with.

  • Also from Oregon and unless I'm mistaken we're one of the better states at atleast trying to be more renewable about it. I thought I remember learning as a kid we had laws about having to plant multiple trees for every tree you chop down. Not sure if those are still around or how strong they are but I feel like we at least treat the environment better than a lot of other states.

  • I feel like this is just the next level of what Reagan did to cripple the government. You make it so they can't do their job effectively then use the fact that it's not efficient anymore as the reason to get rid of it all.

AfD victory in Thuringia: Scholz urges 'firewall' to keep out far right
  • It's also not unique to Germany as well. As an American its crazy how much this just sounds like what's going on in America with the Democrats slowly shifting to the right on things like immigration. Capitulating to the right wing framing on these issues doesn't help you win, it just pushes more people to the right since you're basically saying they're right.

Company creates "solution" to address school "vaping incidents".
  • My problem with it is the whole purpose of what the device does based on the post is stupid. It just puts a notification on the screen as a way to try and use social pressure to get people to stop vaping. But that doesn't work cause no one really cares if you vape or not. Some people might even think it's cool or might turn it into a game of trying to vape without setting it off to impress their other friends who vape. I graduated highschool in 2019 and people definitely vaped and the only people they really cared about hiding it from were the teachers, no other students cared at all. So because of all of that this kind of device is just a waste of money that could be better spent on educating kids on how vaping is bad, just like what we did for cigarettes that worked so well.

As the Borderlands movie slides into oblivion and Risk of Rain 2's new DLC burns, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford compares himself to The Beatles, who he says only "had a 25% hit rate"
  • Pretty sure it's cause they did it without the original people (or person, not sure how many) who did the code. And so what ends up happening is the new people come in, don't understand why things were made the way they were, and try to rework stuff to be better. Whether it actually is needed or not is a different question but either way reworking large parts of your code is bound to lead to bugs and problems.

I haven't been burned by that yet because in most situations people will lock them when using them.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good game dev related communities. I used to use the Unity3D and Unreal Engine subreddits but didn't see anything like that while looking around at communities.
