Biden Urged to 'Follow the Facts' as Study Shows LNG Emissions 33% Worse Than Coal
  • Should we take LNG jobs to support coal jobs? Oh, wait, nevermind, if coal went full production overnight they'd only add about 10,000 jobs to the USA because of how heavily automation has been developed for coal mines.

Another valuable life lesson from Elmo and friends!
  • Yeah, they're not going to suddenly gain $50k+ cash for a down-payment to replace their home. Yes, a mortgage should be cheaper than rent but a renter probably can't save an extra 3 year's worth of rent to put it down.

An artist says Nerf’s Destiny 2 hand cannon is a ripoff of their work
  • I'm curious how this is playing out. A fair number of details are present on the game's item already. The barrel stripe, the upside-down spade with a circular element, and the barrel spade.

That's not to deny the direct copy of this specific design, but rather ask how much can an independent artist claim on what appears to already largely part of what already exists within the game's IP.

That being said, the reddit thread where the artist posted this originally has an edit stating Bungie reached out, handled it well, and will be sharing details later.

USPS' long-awaited new mail truck makes its debut to rave reviews from carriers
  • Kids are going to love it because they can finally draw the correct hoodline without changing anything about their bad art skills. Lowering the education standard yet again! I bet the next gen will come with a 2 foot lift to match the kids' terribly engineered suspensions too!

Is it possible to bottle a fart while maintaining its freshness?
  • They typically sink and they don't have that particular scent component. Apparently, I've been living with bad info on buoyancy apparently because a couple decades Oprah said it's supposed to float. As for fat intake, I cycle on and off with keto (high fat, low carb) but can't say these farts occur during keto. I would also note it's some scent very specific to Wendy's nugs that I don't smell anywhere else. Maybe it's just a particular spice? It's not present in the fries so I don't think it's specifically the oil. I appreciate your educated guess. I was hoping literally anyone else would have this experience. My wife concurs about the similarity of smells but the production is solely my talent.

  • Which is the chemical responsible for the overlap in smells between some of my farts and Wendy's chicken nuggets? Help me Booty-wan, you're my only hope

USPS' long-awaited new mail truck makes its debut to rave reviews from carriers
  • I was ready to say no, that's just Ford Transit but couldn't find conclusive evidence to confirm the minute body lines match a Ford and not a Mercedes Sprinter (my local variant). I went for one last attempt and searched "ford transit usps" and what do you know, we're both right to some degree. The back vehicle is an electric Ford Transit and the USPS has ordered over 9,000 units. It's not the "electric version" but rather a competitor to the Oshkosh lineup, which is the front truck. The Oshkosh NGDV is available as both gas and battery-electric.

Navy officer lost job for secretly installing internet on warship to check social media
  • The link below this parent with the pics shows tweets from Musk saying the point of naming it STINKY is to encourage customizing the name. I guess not everyone knew their LinkSys ID # in the dorms and/or doesn't immediately turn their wifi into a pun. Just in case anyone else found that default name to be suspicious. They're supposedly now back to just starlink

Scientists Discover Mosquitoes Are Using Infrared to Track Humans Down
  • I don't remember when I learned about it or how verifiable the source was, but I knew it too for at least a decade. I am a radiant, heavy-breathing, sweaty target. I have outclassed everyone I've ever met on the mosquito attraction scale. I've used loose longer clothes but thought it was just stopping their bites from reaching my skin. I didn't think about how it could also be diffusing my thermal appearance since I'd still get bitten on exposed areas like face and hands.

parts in a Renewable Energy system
  • Modifying the dam isn't the issue, you need to make sure the upstream area can be flooded. Not all rivers are in a canyon. You need a sizeable lake and consider how catastrophic an overflow would be. Then you also have to consider the effect downstream because you will likely cause a minor drought persistently since not all dams will dump into the ocean. So yes, I understand that "hydro" is both a source and a battery, but they are really 2 entirely different systems based on your other categorizations.

Same thing with the biomass. One system makes trees, one system burns wood.

The graphic isn't particularly wrong, it's just splitting some items and combining others inconsistently.

Why is waking up when my alarm goes off so difficult and unpleasant yet "sleeping in" doesn't feel good and isn't satisfying?
  • +1 on determining (and understanding) sleep cycles. And +1 on naps. I consider myself really good at napping. Somewhere I read NASA determined 26 minutes being the best nap amount, so I have a 28 minute timer because I can usually fall asleep within 5 minutes.

Routines before sleeping can help your brain fall asleep faster. I beleive that's a key to my nap ability because it usually works even if I don't think I'm sleepy. I have 1 hour for lunch at work, so if I bring food, I can nap in my car. I used to park facing uphill and east at one job to get extra recline and keep the afternoon sun off me, but my current lot is flat and I got a sleep mask. I play a specific artist (Deadmau5) on a low volume. I have used construction ear muffs as extra sound dampening.

I learned of a mental game that does an amazing job of getting my thoughts to calm down. Pick a category, then run through the alphabet to name something for each letter. Apple, banana, cranberry, etc. If you can't think of something, skip the letter and come back. I basically never make it to the end unless I'm really upset about something. And, not gonna lie, the most effective category for me is sex/porn categories. Nothing is more focused than a horny brain.

  • I set my thermostat schedule to help with that. It doesn't work too well in the summer due to weak ac, but the heat works great in the other 3 seasons. I let it drop to about 65 around 11pm, raise to 72 around 8am, drop to 68 at 9am if I'm home or lower for work days.

In future when we land on other planets we will need a different calendar, Do you think we need a secular calendar or the current Gregorian one?
  • I would think seasons are the driving reason for an adjusted calendar. Any rotational tilt from the orbital plan will induce seasons. Every planet in our system has seasons, even the gas giants. That will have a cyclical effect on climate. Even in a sealed habitat, thermal regulation and solar power will be affected. The local year will also have an affect on interplanetary travel because, spatially, a day of the year is a specific place in space rather than a specific time. So a local calendar would provide a conversion.

As for a universal calendar, you're right that it doesn't fix anything. Instead of a calendar that works in one place and not 999 other places, a universal calendar would "not work" in 1000 places and work correctly in zero places. We already do something similar with global/space operations: make everything UTC time zone. While yes, it's practically just prime meridian time, it doesn't do daylight savings.
