  • $44m over their term is about 15 houses per year. Considering they plan to bring in 400,000 new migrants per year, I’m not sure defunding women’s sports to build 15 houses is really going to make much of a dent in the housing market.

  • Before the iOS overhaul, you went Settings>Bluetooth>Toggle to turn off BT. That still works like it did before. But what most people do now is just swipe from the top-right and tap the shortcut.

  • As someone who works with small electronics, Phillips is NOT perfectly fine at small sizes. Below a PH1, the torque required to unscrew a long thread and the torque required to cam-out and strip the head get very close together.

  • Just like with the appliances where some vendors had their shops ready way before regulation we already have some phone vendors prepare for that - like Nokia selling some spares via ifixit. So if apple decides to play stupid games it'll be up against vendors that'll be completely fine pushing regulation through quickly as hurting apple will only benefit them.

You mean like Apple’s Self Service Repair, which has been available for a few years now?…

  • Modern batteries have a thin polymer shell. Sit down with that spare battery in the same pocket as your keys, and your leg is going to catch on fire.

My old Nokia had a swappable battery - but that battery was thicker than an entire iPhone.

  • Have you actually read up on her, or are you just assuming that based on her age?

The FTC has been run by old white guys for decades, and it’s been going backwards. Linda Khans essay on antitrust (as a postgrad student) has basically reframed the governments and legal professions approach to antitrust (although real change will be slow, with decades of bad precedent to undo). She went straight from being the top student at Yale Law, to being a professor at Columbia Law and simultaneously the counsel for the House committee on anti-trust.

  • If Apples objective was to force people to upgrade, it would have been much easier to just discontinue support for old handsets on the newest iOS. Instead users got the latest iOS, it was just throttled because of the battery limitations.

  • Also, if plex goes down so does your server. I love plex but if any of the 100% self hosted stuff catches up I'm absolutely jumping ship.

That’s only for authentication and some apps. You can set an IP whitelist so it doesn’t require auth from certain ranges - when I changed ISP a little while ago, I was still using Plex offline.

  • These ”gaming” companies are even worse than Casinos, because they’re unregulated and are studying the psychology of addiction to exploits peoples weaknesses to maximise their profits.

They use techniques such as an “early win” to hook people and override their common sense. (It’s illegal for Casinos to do this in most places.) Examples of other techniques are using artificial in-game currencies to dissociate it from real money; and soft-gating, where something is technically free but it has a delay, so you pay a little bit to skip the delay. It’s super predatory.

Also, exposing kids and teenagers to this is wiring their brain to crave gambling as an adult. It’s the same reason we don’t let 13 years olds smoke - by the time their brain has finished maturing, the desire for nicotine is hard-wired for life.

  • If you don’t already have a private tracker, this is a good one to start with. Easy to maintain ratio even without a Seedbox. I often download common torrents on DCC because it’s so easy to maintain ratio (I was over 100:1 for a while.
