The science is clear. So why can’t governments agree on vaping?
  • I meant dangerous as in that it attracts people who would have never started smoking. While cigarettes are more dangerous, vaping also has it's drawbacks. The base fluid may be safe to consume, but the flavorings are the problem in my eyes. They appeal to a younger audience and the ingredients are most often not known (Corresponding study if you want to dive deeper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507184/#_sec_000093_ )

Additionally nicotine in itself is not something I would want anyone to be addicted to.

The science is clear. So why can’t governments agree on vaping?
  • Yeah the convenience and the flavor are the main problems for me. If the prepackaged vapes would come in non candy flavors, a lot of potential new consumers wouldn't touch vapes. They should be an alternative for smokers and not a new revenue stream for tobacco conglomerates based on a new generation who know smoking in general is bad.

If THC vapes are properly vetted and the buyer is informed about possible health impacts I'm totally ok with that.

  • The politicians are paid by the tobacco companies. There is money to be made, and a new generation will replace tobacco smokers and ensure that the tobacco industry will survive for longer.

Nicotine is socially accepted, that is the other main problem.

The science is clear. So why can’t governments agree on vaping?
  • I’m all for safe substance use if wanted, but vapes are dangerous. I smoked cigarettes, then changed over to vaping and now use snus. Nicotine is a huge problem with it’s addictiveness.

Vapes in the current state they are sold, are like candy to young people and the shops treat it that way. Vaping makes it easy to consume nicotine, and once your body is addicted it craves more and more. The amount of nicotine in these vapes is obscene. And you can do it everywhere with them. You don’t smell it like cigarettes. You can get vapes in any taste you desire. I consumed way more nicotine when I was vaping than with cigarettes.

do you also spend a lot less time on Lemmy compared to Reddit?
  • On Reddit it felt useless to comment, when I found an interesting topic the discussion was already drowning with one word comments and other useless stuff. Here on Lemmy the discussions feel more genuine. Probably it’s because the userbase is more mature, or the nature of Lemmy is not to generate money.

do you also spend a lot less time on Lemmy compared to Reddit?
  • Yeah my browsing time has gone down compared to Reddit. But Lemmy has far less mindless content, if I’m on here I’m more engaged and actively read articles linked or write comments.

Facebook & Instagram fined: How the small country of Norway could finally break Meta's business model.
  • Just because most companies do it, doesn’t mean it’s ok.

It’s not about targeted ads based on information provided by the user of the service. If you have read the article you would know that they are banning behavioral advertising.

Facebook & Instagram fined: How the small country of Norway could finally break Meta's business model.
  • Did you read the whole article? It’s about behavioral advertising based on metrics that are not explicitly stated to the user. If the users opt in to this kind of advertising then it’s ok, but Facebook/meta has to get their agreement.

Got tipping rage? This barista reveals what it's like to be behind the tip screen
  • Tips shouldn’t be the main source of income. It should be a bonus for good work. Tipping culture in the us is getting crazy compared to Europe. The base salary should be enough to be able to live on.

Oracle has declared war on Redhat & IBM. The enterprise linux war has begun
  • Here is the source blog post from oracle: https://www.oracle.com/news/announcement/blog/keep-linux-open-and-free-2023-07-10/

RedHat really fucked up with this move. I know RedHat employees and everyone from RedHat I met so far was proud they work there and how much open source meant to the company. I guess there will be more and more redhatters looking for new opportunities in the coming months.

How do you decide if you should call in sick for the day?
  • I would say if you feel sick call in.

Personally I called in even with a headache or when I wasn’t in the right headspace to work properly. Take care of yourself first.

Depending on how your company handles things of course.

Is it really a mass exodus? And is it really a mass exodus to lemmy?
  • No, they won’t loose all content. I think the quality will just get worse and worse depending on what you view as quality. For the average social media user it probably will be good enough, or it will develop into reposts from other mainstream platforms.

That’s how I’ve been feeling the last few weeks

I took a ton of pictures at an event. Unfortunately the autofocus of my cam is a bit wonky and this lead to blurry pictures. Does anyone have an app or way to restore details on the unfocused object? I also have the raw files of these pictures if that helps.

The next years are going to be fun… The world is burning while the fossil fuel industry is chugging along like everything is great as long as you buy enough co2 credits.

I’m scared in what kind of world my children will have to live in…
