  • I love this! Not sure what you mean by “ends”, though. Are you referring to the whimsical fringe in the armpit of my sweater? That is a design element!

    Question on eggs and hatching
  • I think we might be kindred spirits. The stuff I own because suddenly Hobby X was the most critical thing in my life… There is a recorder (the instrument) sitting on my desk right now because I decided a couple of months ago at 2AM that it was high-time I learned to read music. Thank goodness I didn’t buy a violin.

I took a couple photos mid-molt today, but they are so stinking blurry. It’s a mix of low-skill, low-light, a phone camera, and trying to photograph through reflective enclosures, I think. I have thought about looking into better equipment before, but having read your story I don’t think that’s a good idea!

    Question on eggs and hatching
  • I have (so far) been mercifully spared by the photography bug, so I’m not sure where it falls in terms of cost, but keeping inverts can actually be done really cheaply while still providing very good care. Now that I’ve said that…run for your life, lol.

I can’t really speak to insects, but I do keep tarantulas and have really had to set firm bounds on myself. Not just money-wise (because oh, the beautiful terrariums you can build), but also in terms of what I can reasonably care for, what I reasonably have space for, etc. That said, this is probably the most fun I’ve ever had with a hobby. I have two prepping to molt as I type this and I feel like it’s Christmas morning.

    Question on eggs and hatching
  • This is a little off-topic, but if you are okay with spiders, you might enjoy this video from Dave’s Little Beasties that shows the development of a tarantula (Theraphosa stirmi) from an egg. This is an very large species with very large eggs, so you can really get a good look. I believe Dave does touch on bad eggs briefly here as well.

What’s something you couldn’t get into, but feel like you should?
  • Battlestar Galactica is the one I just can’t do. I didn’t watch it when it aired, but I borrowed the box set from someone around the time it wrapped up. I think I watched 3 very tense episodes, looked at how many remained, and bailed. If I ever try again I’ll pretend I’m watching them being broadcast and stick to one episode a week. I’m probably a wuss, but that show left me exhausted.

ADHD magic trick: set something down
  • I quite like Dana K. White’s system for this. When putting something away she asks “if I were looking for this item where would I look for it first?” And wherever that place is is where the item goes. Now I keep all my Sharpie markers in the silverware drawer and I can always find one.

Dana White doesn’t write specifically for the adhd crowd, but I swear she’s the first organizer that has ever made sense to me. There’s more to her system than this, obviously, but not much, and it almost never involves buying more bins.

Is there an all-encompassing calendar somewhere?
  • Thank you, this is the closest I’ve seen to something comprehensive.

  • Is there an all-encompassing calendar somewhere?

I am pretty new to the game and I’m trying to figure out how people keep track of what’s going on. I’m not trying to do everything, but I’d really love to know my options are.

It seems like info about events/raids, etc. is kind of a mish-mash of official announcements and infographics made by random people. I saw today that all the raid pokemon have changed, but I’m not clear if that happens on a schedule or if it’s mostly a surprise or what. Are the infographic people getting leaks or something? Is a single info source wishful thinking?

What’s one word to prove you lived trough the 90’s?
  • Sweet, I guess I’m going to have to get a PC at some point. I actually played Riven for iPadOS recently and it was still fun, but the point and click is pretty tedious.

I’m not sure a remake willl ever match the magic of when I originally played in 1998, though. My laptop was so junky I played most of the game under a blanket because the screen was so dark, haha.

    Favorite Sunscreen?
  • It’s been a while, but I wanted to come back and thank you for this rec, because I really like the blue lizard sunscreen. I got the stick for my face and tube stuff for the rest of my body and I’m really pleased with them. These actually rub in very well and I’m not leaving white streaks on everything I touch.

  • The ones I’ve been reporting have all been lemm.ee users and it is a violation of the lemm.ee rules to use your account to advertise on lemm.ee or any other instance. I don’t know how other instances are handling it.

I actually don’t know who gets the reports I’ve been submitting, either, so I’m not sure if it’s doing anything.

    Lure or Incense?
  • I have been to a couple community days in the park and both times someone had already added lures to many of the pokestops - probably because there is medal for players catching pokemon from your lure.

I would just go somewhere that has a lot of gyms/stops clustered closely together if you have something like that. At the park I go to there are spots where you can barely see the ground because there are so many pokemon. Even stops without lures have a lot, so finding pokemon on community day has never been an issue and I can finish the research pretty quickly.

Tips? Sunscreen and water, even if it’s not hot where you are.

  • I’ve been reporting them. It seems that a lot of the posts contain affiliate links, so it’s someone trying to make money from that - not because they wrote the books that are getting posted.

Some have been banned, but they keep coming back. Some may be bots, but not all - I saw at least one come back with a hateful response when called out.

    Dune or Hyperion
  • Hyperion is my favorite of the two, but I don’t think you could go wrong with either. If you are interested in audiobooks there is one for Dune that is very good.

  • “ Suddenly the great beast beat its hideous wings, and the wind of them was foul. Again it leaped into the air, and then swiftly fell down upon Éowyn, shrieking, striking with beak and claw.

Still she did not blench: maiden of the Rohirrim, child of kings, slender but as a steel-blade, fair yet terrible. A swift stroke she dealt, skilled and deadly. The outstretched neck she clove asunder, and the hewn head fell like a stone. Backward she sprang as the huge shape crashed to ruin, vast wings outspread, crumpled on the earth; and with its fall the shadow passed away.

A light fell about her, and her hair shone in the sunrise.”

I have several Tolkien prints by Angela Rizza (purchased on etsy), and this is one of my favorites.

ProTip: If you're cooking something, set a timer.
  • As someone who once put some tortillas on the griddle, turned to the fridge to get cheese, and…walked right out of the room and back to my desk, I 100% agree. I sometimes feel dumb that I am literally setting 1 or 2 minute timers, but it’s better than burning stuff. I don’t always need them, but they are really helpful during times of stress when I’m especially preoccupied with other things.

  • I can’t leave moderator position I didn’t ask for

I noticed a few weeks ago that I had been made a moderator of !knitting@lemmy.ml, which was not something I asked for. I assumed it was a mistake, so I clicked “leave the mod team”. A week later I was a mod again, so I left again. I noticed it again tonight, but when I tried to leave it didn’t do anything.

In the mod log it shows my attempts to leave, but in the photo I’ve attached it shows that I am removing someone else. I don’t think that person was ever a moderator, but there seem to be some wires crossed somewhere. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

7/28/23 - I noticed there had been a new release, so I tried again and was able to remove myself successfully this time.

Genuine suggestion made by my iOS photos app. Don’t ask why I have Frodo Baggins as an identified person.

Brachypelma auratum a few days after she molted. I usually leave the molts in with my tarantulas for a while to see what they will do with them. Stashing them in the water dish is very popular and it is always hilarious. This spider tends to ignore them, so I will pull it out soon and add to my collection (the one I usually hide when I have guests).

Over the past 20 years I’ve acquired (and lost) a lot of circular needles. I did give interchangeables a try at one point, but somehow all that remains is a single matching pair of Denise needles.

For a while I used a big binder full of binder pouches for storage, but it was bulky, so I made this instead. I used handheld pipe cutters to cut lengths of 1 inch PVC pipe, glued them together and hung it on the back of a closet door hook with a cotton cord.

It is not the most visually appealing, but it works for me, and it sounds like a rainstick . The short pipes mostly have 16” and some 20/24”. The longer pipes are mostly 40” (I prefer magic loop, so I’ve got a bunch). Not pictured here are the many needles stuck in unfinished projects, lol.

I’m looking for sunscreen recommendations - specifically for outdoor activities (hiking, etc), but if you’ve got everyday sunscreen recs, I’ll take those too. I generally prefer mineral sunscreens and I’m in the US, but feel free to share whatever sunscreens you like and hopefully others will benefit also.

Bonus points if it doesn’t burn your eyes when you get really sweaty.

I just started playing Pokemon Go so I could play with my brother’s kids and I know very little.

I took over my first gym and then was wracked with guilt picturing small children crying their eyes out over their pokemon, so I started googling to see what the consensus was on player etiquette.

From what I understand, as long as a pokemon has been in a gym for 8.5 hours the owner will get the full 5o coins for the day. But I also keep seeing something about the coin reset at 12:01 and read that you shouldn’t take a gym between 11 pm and midnight and I really do not get it. Can someone enlighten me? I did see there had been changes to the game over the years so maybe the stuff I’m reading is not all up-to-date.

I think this is Hyles lineata? I don’t know a lot about moths, but the poor guy could use a lint roller.

I saw this on birdspidersCH youtube channel. It’s a little bit of a tongue-twister for me, but it means “hairy blue” so it’s definitely descriptive.

I have an A. seemanni that has molted 3 times in my care, but she never brings the molts up to the surface. Instead, she shreds them into tiny pieces and buries all the pieces deep within her burrow. With her most recent molt, she was finally ready for a rehouse and, amazingly, I was able to recover some intact spermatheca. She is one of my favorites, so I am very pleased.
