How do you filter ads and trackers outside of a browser while still using a VPN service?
  • On a rooted phone, you could edit your /etc/hosts file with a list of blocked domains. Outside of that, I'm not aware of any way to have a filtering app and a VPN app at the same time.

Alternatively, you could try hosting a DNS server that doesn't resolve the domains you want blocked, like a pihole server. Some VPN apps allow you to use your own DNS and if you're feeling up for it, there's apparently even a way to run a local DNS server using dnsmasq on your phone mentioned in this link.

Leak at First CO2 Injection Site in US Exposes Dangerous Folly of Carbon Capture
  • Welp, that was bound to happen eventually.

Too bad the solid version of this isn't as easy to implement. Burying algae using open growth pools are probably the best migration method I've heard of so far. Brilliant Planet seems to have an effective process.

She ate a poppy seed salad just before giving birth. Then they took her baby away.
  • It looks like they flagged her because she missed multiple check up appointments prior to delivery too, which apparently is a common sign of drug abuse. It really just seems like she's overwhelmed time-wise and really doesn't need 5 children but that's her choice as long as they aren't harmed.

    Elements of Renewable Energy
  • There are forms of hydroelectric generation that aren't damaging to the environment. We just need to actually be aware of the consequences and perform an environmental risk assessment. I think this is a requirement for new installations in the US, but I could be wrong.

Sanity check: Yubikeys and password shares
  • If you're just storing the password on the key then, no you can't get it unless you have the key. The main usage (arguably) for a yubikey is the FIDO2 auth method where you add those keys as MFA methods. That would allow access using either key.

Sanity check: Yubikeys and password shares
  • It depends. Do you need MFA to access the password manager?

If not, then yes it reduces the effectiveness of having MFA on your accounts but they are still more secure than not having MFA at all.

Racism Is Why Trump Is So Popular
  • I think after 9/11 they were still the same old tactic they used in and after the cold war; security theater and fear mongering. But you're right, news and political representatives definitely weren't the completely open bigots that they are today though and I think you might be right about that time period being the start of today's Fox news.

Social media definitely had a profound impact on politics, people's rights, and open bigotry. This definitely gave them the means to have more of a voice with younger demographics but I'll still argue that it wasn't until Trump entered the picture that they were able to really push their narrative and decouple "truth" from official news sources in the minds of many. I don't think I've seen so many people just repeat distorted views of reality at once until then.

Racism Is Why Trump Is So Popular
  • This is definitely true. It's something I've heard Trump supporters argue about firsthand. But it's not just only racism or the threat of being a minority, but the fear of losing freedom to do what they want according to their own skewed morals. So while a decent chunk of why they think the way they do is sheer racism and fear around that (especially since the start of the BLM movement), it's not the core of the problem.

I believe that this started as the resurgence of toxic masculinity in that Trump showing people it was okay to be misogynistic, racist, and homophobic in opposition to race, gender, and identity politics rising in the 2010s. Women's rights and LGBT people are in their sights as well and, despite their narrative fitting well with fundamentalist religious morals, this seems more like resentment that those movements didn't address their needs or issues. COVID restrictions that they disagreed with fanned the growing fire into the fulblown fascist conservative movement we see today.

So I don't think it's the fact that cis het white people are in lower relative numbers but it's the event of rising social progressivism and more rights for minorities and women that spurred the antagonism of them.

Tldr: Bigots are upset that they didn't get anything out of women's, LGBT, and minorities rights.

Sineng Electric launches world’s largest sodium-ion battery storage project
  • According to a paper published in 2020 here, the specific energy and energy density are in line with what you are saying. But according to the article that Wikipedia cited here, sodium batteries show the opposite.

You're probably right but it looks like there's conflicting info about this currently.

Sineng Electric launches world’s largest sodium-ion battery storage project
  • What's interesting to me is the power to weight ratio. Sodium-Ion is at ~1000 W/Kg vs Li-Ion at ~175-425 W/Kg. EVs could maybe have less weight and cost in the future because of this.

Are you excited about the upcoming Pixel 9, or have you given up on Google hardware?
  • I'd like to get a Pixel for GrapheneOS but I'm sorta waiting to see if the upcoming fold has pen support. If not, I'll probably just get an earlier model since it's cheaper.

    Proxmox on Laptop, Network Setup
  • You definitely should try something with an actual desktop. It sounds like you're wanting a headed server with virtualization capabilities. I'd personally run LXD or KVM and LXC if I needed a type 2 hypervisor and containers like what you're saying. Luckily, a ton of distros support both of these at this point.

Btw, proxmox utilizes KVM and LXC on the backend. So the only difference is that you're leveraging the tools directly. If you're a CS student then learning the underlying tools is the best way to learn about a system and how it all interacts.

    What do you think?
