Does anybody here still wish the Fediverse just had more people?
  • 1000% agree. But to Lemmy's credit, I found a greate niche community of linux and programming enthusiasts, plus I've noticed I run into Europeans more in the wild on here.

I think the fediverse has it's benefits. Still not a full replacement. Truthfully I don't think it will ever be, those niche communities will always end up being hosted where it suits them best.

Is it worth upgrading my cheap Chinese bike?
  • Just to throw in my 2 cents, when I started bike riding I had a cheap supermarket bike. At the time I didn't care much for reliability, I just rode for fun. As I got more into it, I bought a used hardtail for about the same price as the supermarket bike was brand new. That switch over was what defined my relationship with bikes.

Riding my bike turned from just a leisure activity into exercise, grocery runs, going to class, anything I thought I could make it on 2 wheels to. The quality is night and day.

But I think you kinda gotta appreciate how bad supermarket bikes are first, before appreciating the joy of a light, rigid frame

Bike Manufacturers Are Making Bikes Less Repairable
  • This is extremely frustrating. For individual bike shops, this now means business is going to be forced into large corporate owned shops just for simple things like rebuilding a hub. Really hoping the bike community pools together and offers a generic, simple bike that is useful for stuff like touring or grocery runs, without a bunch of specialized parts. Something like the buffalo bicycle

YSK: At the current rate of consumption there's only 50 years worth of oil left in the world
  • I genuinely don't understand what you mean. Fertile how? It's pretty obvious global temperatures are increasing, heat related deaths are more common in areas that previously weren't an issue. Catastropic environmental events seem to happen every couple months.

You have an article you can share because it sounds like a bad take

YSK: At the current rate of consumption there's only 50 years worth of oil left in the world
  • I was curious how best to cut down on our usage, if we'd be aggressive, how long we could make our oil last.

From the EPA, seems the like roughly 40% of an oil barrel ends up being used to create gasoline source. The transportation sector accounts to 2/3 of our total oil consumption. In the transportation sector, roughly 54% of energy is used just for passenger cars. source

If everyone in the world stopped driving gasoline cars and switched to a 100% renewable option, we would only cut our oil production by about 36%. That changes the timeline from 50 years to 78 years.

Pretty saddening to think about. Hopefully some technology improvements for oil recycling come around quickly

Trump floats sending military after US citizens on election day
  • So yeah not quite 99/100 but definitely a majority, especially recently. And I agree its very concerning that domestic terrorists are usually far-right. It is something I'll bring up in the future to Trumpists, I honestly don't know what their reaction to this info would be, but I hope it causes some kind of change.

Grouping Islamists with domestic right-wing is a bit odd, but I get your point. I doubt they would vote for Trump. Trump would also absolutely deploy the national guard and army against Islamic extremists, even if they were "right-wing" technically.

I could potentially see an argument that Islamists would be leftist in an American context, since their main opponent was the Bush and Republican administration, but that is also a stretch.

58% Far Right, 8% Far left, and 27% Islamist

Seems the most descriptive. Thanks for the info and stats

  • I know these people closely. I don't think they expect him to go full on dictator. Maybe thats true for some other Trumpists, majority not true for the ones I know.

Talking points you brought up seem to be a strawman. For Christians, a big reason they vote for Trump is because the Republican party has taken a hard stance on not allowing abortion. For many, many Christians, that is as serious a topic, as facism is on left-wing discussion forums.

And again, their voting ideology is not so clear cut. They don't support Trump because they believe he is perfect in every category, rather, he checks the one box (or rather, his party) that is extremely controversial and important to them.

Also yeah, right-wing extremists are more common then left-wing. So there is a concern there. I stand by what I said though, that the majority of Trump voters do not support extremist action.

  • That's fair. Personally, I am no soldier, I intend to flee if the US become a battleground, and I would encourage, even go out of my way to help, my friends and family flee as well. I would really oppose anyone I know dying for a political cause.

  • Yeah that's a fair point. I looked into it a bit more, right-wing extremists have sharply increased since Jan 6th, so there is a concern there. It isn't 99/100 though. Still high, like 90/100 <EDIT> Maggoty got some data, real number for violent terrorist attacks by political ideology is 85% far right to 8% far left. Or rather, 58% far right, 8% far left, 27% Islamist </EDIT>

For anyone interested in the stats, this is taken from the Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) dataset at start.umd.edu

  • From my conversations with Trump supporters, they typically acknowledge Trump is a bad choice and don't like the way he acts, talks, etc. They typically view what Trump says as an exaggeration, saying things like "he won't actually xyz".

Universally, people I know that support Trump in real life, support him either because they are Christian, and feel that the Democratic party is against their core values. Or, they feel some kind of hatred against leftists, because of propoganda they have been fed.

That's the way I see reality. There are extremists on both sides, but I refuse to stop believing that Trumpists aren't voting with what they believe is best for America, even if I personally disagree with them.

I really dislike these discussions that paint the other side of a political battle as something insane like Nazi's, that just isn't real, and it makes me so sad to see people either believing it, or feeding the cycle by adding to the joke.

  • Yeah that's fair then, 99.99999+% of leftist don't support assassination. Trump is blowing it out of proportion.

But there are violent radicals inside the homeland, that are Americans. So he has a point somewhat.

  • I like how the top 2 comments imply that all the trump supports are nazi supporters, despite the article explicitly stating that the boat was a known anti-semitic person who has tried to stir shit up in europe as well. There is even a video of trump supporters splashing the boat to try to get them out of the parade: https://twitter.com/i/status/1845629364525846602

I think I'm going to stop interacting with political feeds until after the election. It seems obvious that party politics are in full swing, and everyone is trying to demonize the other by making strawman arguments. Please, just vote logically and for the rights and justifications that are at stake, not because you think your fellow americans that disagree with you are anti-semitic.

Who owns your shiny new Pixel 9 phone? You can’t say no to Google’s surveillance
  • Well to this point (I don't 100% believe this flavor of state surveillance theory but) you cannot buy phones made my foreign manufacturers and have them work in the US. For example, Oppo, Huawei, Xiaomi, all do not work on USA cell networks, and you can't buy them unless you go through an import process. Just to name a few of the many. But granted, those are all Chinese manufacturers. EDIT** I was wrong, apparently with the right settings you can get most phones to work on US cell networks

Heat-related Texas deaths climb after Beryl left millions without power for days or longer.
  • My gut tells me it's definitely an economic factor. I think it's because the netherlands has towns that are close together, so burying 1 km of electrical cable could potentially serve more people. In texas, possibly, a km of electrical cable will go from the road to someone's house

It's in the numbers too. The netherlands, as a whole, has a population density of 424/km2. Texas has about 1/10th that, at 42.9/km2.
