Multiple people shot near Kentucky highway in 'active shooter situation,' authorities say
  • London Mayor Randall Weddle said seven people were injured, both by gunfire and in related highway collisions.

“No one was killed from this, thankfully,” he said in a video posted to Facebook. “But we ask that you continue to pray.”

Meth and guns. It’s a winning combination!

'It's a lie': Trump's 'own campaign' failed to substantiate ex-president's new rally claim
  • Donald Trump's own presidential campaign has failed to substantiate the former president's Saturday rally claim about children and schools, according to CNN, which deemed the statement a "lie."

Trump recently spoke at a Moms for Liberty event where the former president made an eye-popping claim about transgender kids.

"The transgender thing is incredible... your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation. The school decides what’s going to happen with your child," Trump said last week.

So he’s been lying non stop for decades, but by the time some corporate news operation actually uses the word “lie” he’s already on to insane rantings.

    Kamala mistreats her staff /s
  • We say this every time there’s a temporary moment of a vague sense that not everything is going to shit immediately. After Obama won, for example. When Bill Clinton was about to win.

It’s an occasional problem when working in reality. The corporate media will make adjustments soon to ensure rage and fear carry the day as always. It never lasts too long.

  • Yes but in the face of this:

The most overtly racist, dishonest, incompetent, ignorant, and compromised candidate possible. EVER. And that’s saying something.

This wasn’t “GW Bush and his war on terror”-level bullshit this was light-years beyond that.

  • Hahahaha! That is by far the stupidest embrace of “AI” possible.

I’d say I can’t wait for it to fail, but whenever I say that things tend to become intractably lodged in the culture, so. Great success!

Fear of a 'mean, bully Trump' showing up at Harris debate has his advisers on edge: NYT
  • Debates since 2016 (hell, 2000) have been anything but. They are tragicomic farces of inane television “news” production and political spectacle.

It’s not possible to have anything good come from them, but if nothing bad comes from them, then, well - go do, I guess.

I’ll be under the couch with my eyes closed and hands over my ears.

www.crikey.com.au AI worse than humans in every way at summarising information, government trial finds

A test of AI for Australia's corporate regulator found that the technology might actually make more work for people, not less.

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/19416727

    > Artificial intelligence is worse than humans in every way at summarising documents and might actually create additional work for people, a government trial of the technology has found. > > Amazon conducted the test earlier this year for Australia’s corporate regulator the Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) using submissions made to an inquiry. The outcome of the trial was revealed in an answer to a questions on notice at the Senate select committee on adopting artificial intelligence. > > The test involved testing generative AI models before selecting one to ingest five submissions from a parliamentary inquiry into audit and consultancy firms. The most promising model, Meta’s open source model Llama2-70B, was prompted to summarise the submissions with a focus on ASIC mentions, recommendations, references to more regulation, and to include the page references and context. > > Ten ASIC staff, of varying levels of seniority, were also given the same task with similar prompts. Then, a group of reviewers blindly assessed the summaries produced by both humans and AI for coherency, length, ASIC references, regulation references and for identifying recommendations. They were unaware that this exercise involved AI at all. > > These reviewers overwhelmingly found that the human summaries beat out their AI competitors on every criteria and on every submission, scoring an 81% on an internal rubric compared with the machine’s 47%.

The Georgia State Election Board is facing criticism for changing rules, specifically one that involves the certification of election results. There have also been calls for board members Janelle King, […]

Last week: >The Georgia State Election Board recently approved a rule that could allow for local election boards to refuse certification of results.

This all comes as the board is currently facing a lawsuit for allegedly meeting illegally.

This week, Georgia State Election Board member, “conservative personality”, conservative PAC founder, and “pit bull for victory” at the recent Trump rally, offered her thoughts on the issues: [essentially “lol. Suck it, losers”]

This is not the Georgia Election Board member trying a quid-pro-quo for a white house gig. This is a different Georgia Election Board member.

So, they’re in place to refuse to certify a Democratic win, it’s all nice and “legal”, and we’re just watching it happen. Yay republiQans.

"After receiving a tip about a family of Burrowing Owls on the eastern edge of Cheyenne, a photographer rushed to the location in late June. The owlets seemed nearly ready to leave their burrows. Over the years, the photographer has perfected a method using a GoPro on a small tripod, set to take a photo every 5 seconds. They leave the camera behind, allowing the owls to feel comfortable. The challenge lies in the long wait to see if the effort pays off. This shot was taken on June 28th."
