good alternatives to raspberry pi which are cheap and efficient?
  • I got a mini pc (e.g. a NUC). I did this after the price for rasps went sky high. Check out used NUCs, you can get a lot of power for the price.

    Selfhosted backup solution with GUI
  • I backup Proxmox VMs and templates onto my NAS, and from there into the cloud. If you don’t want the cloud maybe auto backup to an external drive and keep it somewhere safe (out of range of a possible disaster to your home)

Should I go with a prebuilt or custom built NAS to get into self hosting?
  • I went with a Synology and have been very happy with it. Easy to use, very nice GUI, yet quite powerful with the features provided.

From there I moved on to NUC. I used to host several things through Docker on the Synology but I’m now moving many of those things to the NUC.

Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here
  • Very well thought out post. It seems like they are considering pretty big measures. I think the next logical place to go for them is to whitelist instead of blacklist. Sucks for self hosters, but in general gives Beehaw what they want.

Moderation tools seem to be the biggest problem for the poster. They also say the devs don’t see it as a priority. They say they’ve even offered bounties to add better tool support. Moderation tools get brought up all the time on Lemmy—I agree that it should be the main focus or development right now TBH.

What is your contingency for when the ISP goes down?
  • I have a 5g home internet backup connection. My primary internet is fiber, so my thinking if there is a cut somewhere it could also affect cable, so I use over the air as my backup.

    Anon meets an upstanding citizen
  • Reminds me of when I vacationed in New Orleans. I passed by the city hall at 9 in the morning and out of the building came several men in suits with Hurricanes in hand. Definitely weren’t the only ones with drinks either.

Judge in US v. Google trial didn’t know if Firefox is a browser or search engine
  • Mehta even appeared briefly confused by some of the references to today's tech, unable to keep straight if Mozilla was a browser or a search engine. He also appeared unclear about how SEM works and struggled to understand the options for Microsoft to promote Bing ads outside of Google's SEM tools.

This is not the first thing I have heard troubling about judge Mehta regarding this case. He also ruled that it would not be considered that Google employees and executives purposely destroyed evidence related to the case. It’s not a good sign for the antitrust argument with a judge like this.
