What are some double standards in society for men ?
  • Insane expectations being placed on women around beauty and appearance, and the resulting insecurities that creates, play a big role in this

  • It's not entirely on you. Accusing you of mansplaining is not cool, she should've just said something like "i'm sharing this because I'm looking for emotional support, not solutions, so please stop trying to solve my problems when I'm just venting".

In a sense, how people react to having problems shared with them is a cultural difference, neither is right or wrong but they can be jarring and confusing when you're used to one culture but interact with a different one. But it's not fair to just assume the other culture is acting in bad faith

The Available Studies of the Vegan Diet on Cats
  • I've heard the "pick-me" phrase most common in the context of girls, where they'll say stuff like "i'm not like other girls" to try to get favor from guys. https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/pick-me-girl/ this is actually a really good summary of it, "A pick-me girl is a woman who obsessively desires male approval and validation, often at the expense of other women."

in this case a pick-me vegan is trying to get favor from non-vegans by saying "cats can't possibly be vegan" at the expense of a rational discussion

    "What is a woman?"
  • The general point is that the "what is a woman" question is still word games rather than an honest attempt at finding truth and understanding

How to Switch From Chrome to Firefox (and Why You Should)
  • I switched to arkenfox since the librewolf package lagged a bit on arch and I didn't want to build myself. If sites really break bad (usually I can get around it by disabling some ublock settings), I just open a blank firefox profile

  • For some background, I'm a huge fan of alternative keyboards and layouts, I've been using florisboard since it got the nalmy layout and swipe typing, and switched to thumbkey shortly after it came out.

I recently have been purging my phone of unused apps and even though I always use thumbkey, I ran out of low hanging fruit and decided to compare my wpm with thumbkey and the default qwerty grapheneos keyboard. Turns out, both are ~40-44 wpm, which is definitely good (the average is 30), but given that I've used thumbkey so long I was a bit surprised it was the same speed as a keyboard layout I've only used a handful of times in years (I don't use qwerty on desktop either).

I just realized I haven't tested one hand mode, so I'll edit the post with those results, but it got me curious to see what other peoples speeds are with thumbkey vs qwerty. If you share, it would be also interesting to know how long you've been using thumbkey

edit: one handed is where thumbkey really shines. Not only was it a lot more comfortable and smooth, it also hit 38 wpm, whereas qwerty was 27. Looks like thumbkey is here to stay on my phone, thanks for the great keyboard!

I have waybar set to be on the right side of my screen, but the wallpaper goes "under" it, such that if I have two windows open, the center of the wallpaper isn't in the center of the gaps between the windows, if that makes sense.

I'd like it so that the center of the wallpaper is in the center of the gaps between two windows. Or in other words, so that the wallpaper goes from the left edge of the screen to the left edge of the bar, so the bar just has a static color bg.

Does anyone know how to do that?

Is there anything you can bring kayaking, swimming, or really anywhere people are fishing that will scare the fish away from the fishers? Ideally something not very obvious, and for kayaking something you can easily turn on near fishers and off when you're not near them?

It always feels super weird to me, but that's also coming from someone who feels weird with eye contact and saying other peoples names, so maybe it's just me. Has anybody else noticed it, or are there other people you've noticed that do that? Does it seem weird to you?

Anybody know any good vegan themed gym shirts? I'm thinking something similar to dom mazzetis bro science shirts (yeah he's a shitty person but his shirts can be pretty creative), but obviously centered around lifting as a vegan. And sustainably and ethically sourced. Bonus if they have tall sizes
