What is something really stupid you purchased that turned out far better than expected?
  • Wireless charger - picked up from Ikea on a whim. Looks decent and appreciate not having to plug in charger each time. Probably better for phone battery too but don't quote me on that. Plus useful in charging my ear pods too(haven't plugged them as far as I remember)

is there a serious, no bullshit alternative for YouTube?
  • If you want to watch YouTube on TV with a better interface sans ads, would recommend using SmartTube.

There is option to disable shorts there. It also has sponsor block to skip in video fluff.

    YouTube recommendations (dramatization)
  • SponsorBlock is a must for this. Its basically a crowdsourced addon for skipping stuff that you mentioned.

For most popular videos it is seamless, for other obscure ones you can save someone the agony of watching it!

What can the 'average Joe' start hosting, that will change their life?
    • Pi hole
    • Syncthing(was able to replace Dropbox for my keepass database when they decide to limit number of devices for free tier) - perfect for regularly updated files and backups for photos, etc.
    • Audiobookshelf - great way to manage audiobooks, also has a nice android app plus can turn each audiobook/series/collection of books into RSS and put in your favorite podcast app
    • Plex/Jellyfin for media collections
