  • @mattblaze@federate.social my oldest son with a painting made right after we moved to the foot of Mt. Umunhum in South San Jose. The box is visible pretty far away but doesn’t seem to register much with people north of Almaden area. Source, years of telling people I lived near the box on the mountain. During COVID they just opened it and you could see SF bay and Monterey Bay in such smog free clarity.

  • @mattblaze@federate.social I drove from Maryland to Califorjianin 2008 and each time I saw windmills I was so thrilled - they are not ugly and they are a concrete that we are marching into the future. Now whenever I land at an airport I judge the city by how much visible solar panels I can see. So many people missing an opportunity for good and for profit.

  • @chaucerburnt @blikkie @gerikson @RememberTheApollo it was my first exposure to carney culture and tattoos. Actually reasonable prep for the 3rd millennium so far. I think the lessons are that the people in the powerful groups really can't escape the societal blindness that position entails, blindness of their own society and time, and that reading of works non-hegemonic authors is needful to find the most free and innovative visions of the future.

  • @chaucerburnt @blikkie @gerikson @RememberTheApollo one of the tendencies that kept so much male written fiction from the mid 20th century from being truly radical. Weirdly a lot of Sci Fi is much more revealing of its time of authorship even to the decade than things like Pride and Prejudice or King Lear.
