What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?
  • That's my understanding. It's a long time ago but I believe they bought out Sun when they were facing bankruptcy.

  • If they'd released the x86 version of Solaris when it became clear that SPARC couldn't keep up with Intel and AMD that could have been a possibility.

Solaris was such an amazing OS.

  • What a great twist. I've had solid success with ChatGPT for stuff like that in the past so put your description in and it couldn't come up with anything.

It did give some useful information which I can paste in here if you don't have an account?

Mostly it was asking if you could remember any other detail like character names, setting or even tone of the writing.

Of course you do. Allowing borders to be redrawn by force isn't good for stability anywhere.

    Ireland to ban disposable vapes
  • Agreed. I think a huge part of it is down to how many kids are vaping here too. Saw an interview with the Taoiseach (prime minister) and he said 13% of 12-17 year olds had vaped in the last 30 days. Pretty crazy number.

  • The sale of disposable vapes is set to be banned under proposals going to Cabinet.

The Minister for Health is expected to get Government approval to draft these laws which will ban the sale, manufacture or import of single-use or disposable vapes in Ireland.

Stephen Donnelly plans to introduce this ban on environmental and public health grounds.

Apple told to pay back €13bn in tax by EU
  • Well I am delighted. €13.1B + the 1.2 in interest represents what will be a bump of 16% of total tax revenue compared to 2023 (€88B total). There are lots of things that money can be used for.

All that colonizing, and for what!?
  • Indian food is special because it uses something called “spice” and no one else does apparently

Was in Hyderabad for work a few times about 10-15 years ago and in fairness, India is the absolute GOAT of spicing food. Like every dish is flavourful but not necessarily spicy. Office canteen food costing about 40c served on a prison tray - Incredible. Hell even the airport food was delicious.

City of Columbus sues man after he discloses severity of ransomware attack
  • In the early days of ransomware I helped a small business of a friend that was attacked. They got in and waited months, creating garbage backups until they were confident then sprang the trap.

Tbh I was impressed with how thorough they'd been.

How is Open Source project work paid?
  • Our small company paid a prominent (of that specific driver) open source driver writer for prioritisation of some work more than once. All the code was GPL.

I know it's only one data point but it's one way.

    > An Australian man is set to appear in court after being arrested for the alleged theft of more than A$600,000 (€359,880) worth of commemorative coins linked to the popular children's television show "Bluey", police said.

    > The 47-year-old is accused of stealing 63,000 unreleased, limited-edition A$1 coins from a secure warehouse in the Sydney suburb of Wetherill Park in June, according to "Strike Force Bandit", a special unit police set up to investigate the theft.

"Strike Force Bandit" is honestly an incredible name. For those not familiar with the show the father is called Bandit.

The balloons, which were found across South Korea, carried toilet paper, batteries and suspected poo.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that "some of the fallen balloons carried what appears to be faeces judging from its dark colour and odour".

Keen to hear any novel ideas (or just the humdrum of your weekend).

Planning on watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and / or Star Trek Voyager with the 10 year old myself. Going on a decent hike and playground with the gang also in the mix.

www.pravda.com.ua US House Speaker promises to unblock aid to Ukraine but with significant changes

Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke with Republican senators on Wednesday, saying that the House will prepare its draft to support Ukraine, but in a significantly different form than the one already approved by the Senate.

    > Senator Kevin Cramer also said that Mike Johnson clearly expressed his intention to help Ukraine. > > "He was pretty clear about it,"

    Sounds positive.

www.kyivpost.com Ukrainian Air Force Takes Down Three Russian Su-34s, Patriot Potentially Engaged

Without disclosing details, the Air Force commander claimed kills on three Su-34s in response to Russia’s overnight “Shahed” attack. The downed jets are platforms for Kh-59 missiles and guided bombs.

Details are fairly scant at this point but the head of Ukraine's air force has confirmed it on telegram.

Total value of that is > $120M USD. Nom nom nom.
